TOURNAMENT Most Valuable Player (MVP) 'The Dream' Akeem Kanhai (184-G-91) was sensational at both ends of the court as he helped propel the Amelia's Ward Jets to back-to-back Brusche's Basketball Classic titles and made them $300 000 richer, following their 55-44 points win over Ravens last weekend at the Mackenzie Sports Club Hard Court. Akeem Kanhai, regarded as one of Guyana's top players, scored 17 points, grabbed 11 boards, while picking up three steals and three block-shots, in a well-rounded performance for the Jets. Jets guard Neil Simon returned to competitive basketball with an inspiring 11 points while Adrian Webster also had a good game for 10 points 16 rebounds. For the Ravens who had to settle for the second-place prize of $200 000, Omar Walton played well for 10 points, Ryan Gullen (191-F/G-87) had nine and Ryan Stephney was held to five points. In the third place playoff game, Shelroy Thomas poured in a game-high 33 points as the Colts defeated Victory Valley Royals 90-75. Harold Adams, who scored 111 points in the LABA league this year, netted 23 points for the Royals. After a slow start and a 4-4 stalemate within the first five minutes of the encounter, Ravens were ahead at the end of the first quarter 14-12 and by the end of the second quarter the City side still held a three-point advantage (28-25). The initial tussle in front of a good crowd saw both sides with problems executing from the perimeter as the defence collapsed on both ends of the floor. The shooting abilities of Orin Rose of the Jets and Ryan Gullen for Ravens were expected to be factors in this game but never actually materialised. It was left for Akeem Kanhai to orchestrate as his team's offence as with four minutes, 30 seconds (4:30) left, he penetrated to hand his team the lead permanently 31-30. Akeem Kanhai took command at both ends of the floor and opened the game and scored seven of his 17 points within the pivotal third quarter as the Jets stepped up their game to outscore the Ravens 20-6 and take control 45-34 when the penultimate quarter ended. Meanwhile, president of the Guyana Amateur Basketball Federation (GABF) Nigel Hinds, secretary of the Linden Amateur basketball Association Joseph Chapman and Dennis Clarke all received plaques for their contributions to basketball over the years. Deshanna Skeete, Guyana's South American Youth Games 400m winner and CARIFTA Games gold medallist Compton Caesar were also honoured by the Brusche's Basketball Foundation.
