Mt Alvernia lifts ISSA Western Conference basketball title- April 18, 2017
Mt Alvernia High won their second Inter-Secondary School Sports Association (ISSA) Western Conference girls' basketball title on Tuesday after upsetting the previously unbeaten Holland High 31-28 in an exciting final played at the Montego Bay Cricket Club in St James. Mt Alvernia, who first won the title three years ago and were playing their third final in four years, were led by the season's Most Valuable Player (MVP) Tiana Wilson. Wilson scored a game-high 14 points and had 10 rebounds as her team gave up a six-point lead early in the fourth quarter and trailed by three points late in the game. Holland High had beaten the Montego Bay team twice in the regular season and started Tuesday's game as favourites to win the school's first title, but missed 10 straight free throws in the fourth quarter as they took the lead, then gave it up again. Both teams will represent the Western Conference in the national play-offs set to be played later this month. Mt Alvernia High led 6-2 after the first quarter and were up by three points 14-11 at half- time, but Holland took charge in the third quarter and led by one point 22-21. Holland extended their lead to three points midway the fourth quarter, until Wilson scored six straight points to give her team the lead that they were able to hold on to until the final whistle. Carina Wallace also scored six points for Mt Alvernia, while Shanielle Johnson scored seven points to lead Holland High. Tatianna Fagan and Thanielle Johnson both scored six points each. |
