Catherine Hall All-stars and MoBay Boys Club Warriors were crowned Western Basketball Association Elite League and Men's Division One champions respectively last weekend. On Saturday evening, Catherine Hall completed a stunning 2-0 win over favourites Cricket Club Knights to win their second Elite League title in three years, and a day later Warriors prevailed 2-1 over University of the West Indies-Western Jamaica Campus Jayhawks. Both games were played at the Montego Bay Cricket Club Courts. Catherine Hall, the third seed, finished the season strong, winning four games in a row in the play-offs after coming from a game down to beat defending champions Granville Jaguars 2-1. They won the first game of the series against the Knights 76-68 before completing the win on Saturday. The All-stars had failed to win a game against either Granville or Knights in the regular season. Vaughn Corke scored a double-double for Catherine Hall and Michael Schloss had a game-high 37 points as they survived several rallies from the Knights, who came from double-digit deficits to within a point on two occasions late in the game. All-stars led by 13 points, 28-15, after the first quarter but Cricket Club rallied in the second to cut the deficit to seven points at half-time, down 48-41. Cricket Club came as close as three points 70-67 at the end of the third quarter, setting up a tense fourth quarter where Catherine Hall's better physical conditioning took them over the line. Corke scored 19 points and had 13 rebounds, Goyan Malcolm scored seven points and had eight assists. Jhaun Bryan also had a double-double for Knights with 13 points and 13 rebounds, Antonio Spence scored 23 points and had nine rebounds, Omroy Kerr contributed 18 points and Ralique Grant, 10.
A day later, Warriors rallied late in the game after a more than 30 points win in the first game of the best-of-three finals to win 86-81, and earn promotion to the Elite League. On Saturday, Jayhawks tied up the series at 1-1 after winning 67-66. Warriors had a 96-61 blowout win in the first game. Jayhawks put up a fight on Sunday, coming back from a 10-point deficit in the fourth quarter to take the lead late on, but Warriors prevailed in the end, thanks mainly to David Gordon and Alex Gilchrist who combined for 43 points. Warriors led 17-12 after the first quarter, but Jayhawks trimmed the lead to 32-30 at half-time. The teams were tied at 36 at the 6-minute-56 second mark in the third quarter before Warriors outscored Jayhawks 8-2 for the rest of the quarter to lead 50-42 going into the fourth. Warriors started the fourth quarter with a 4-2 run, but Jayhawks rallied with 12 straight points, and with three minutes and 48 seconds to go the teams were locked at 58 each. But the Warriors took over late outscoring the Jayhawks 10-3 to win by seven points. It did not help Jayhawks' cause when Odane Whittaker fouled out with 3:48 to go with his team up 59-58. Minott led the Jayhawks with 19 points, while Whittaker scored 17 points and had eight rebounds coming off the bench.
