Herbert Morrison snap losing skid in ISSA basketball play-offs - Feb 13, 2019

Herbert Morrison Technical snapped the western conference's losing skid in the ISSA boys' national basketball play-offs with win s over St Elizabeth Technical High School (STETHS) and Knox College at Montego Bay Cricket Club on Thursday. A week after losing their opening games and possibly giving up their national Under-19 title, Herbert Morrison beat STETHS by 29 points, 78-49, in the Under-16 section and rallied to beat Knox by three points, 64-61, in overtime in their Under-19 game that was tied 59-all after four quarters of regulation basketball. It was the second-straight game by the Herbert Morrison Under-19 team that needed at least one overtime, as they lost to St George's College in double overtime in their first play-off round game. Led by double-doubles from David Gordon and Darren King, Herbert Morrison led 19-14 after the first quarter, but Knox College cut the deficit to two points, 30-28, at half-time. The home team led 43-37 at the end of the third quarter, but Knox College rallied again to tie the scores at the end of regulation before Herbert Morrison edged ahead in the extra period. Gordon scored a game-high 28 points and had 18 rebounds, King scored 10 points and had 13 rebounds, while Davaughn Campbell also scored 16 points. Knox College also had two players with double-doubles - Javid Nelson scored 13 points and had 13 rebounds and Jhaved Powell scored 13 points and had 10 rebounds - while Shamar Thompson scored 12 points.
In the Under-16 game, Herbert Morrison prevailed despite a game-high 36 points and 20 rebounds from Khaleel White and 13 points and 14 rebounds from Hubert Rodney of STETHS. Herbert Morrison led 19-10, 42-26 and 61-36 at the end of each quarter with Anthony Thorpe leading the way with 10 points, Kyle Fraser scored 14 points and Akeem Kelly got 12 points.

St George's College and Campion College crowned themselves champions of the Inter-Secondary Schools Sports Association (ISSA) National Basketball Championships High Schoolboys Under-19 and Under-16 competitions, respectively, at GC Foster College of Physical Education and Sport in Spanish Town on Monday.
