Mt Alvernia hunt second win against Montego Bay High in girls' basketball

Defending champions Mt Alvernia High School will go after back-to-back wins when they take on crosstown rivals Montego Bay High in their ISSA Western Conference Girls' Open basketball first round today at Montego Bay High School. The Montego Bay teams will meet in the second game of a double-header after Holland High and William Knibb Memorial contest the first game set to start at 1:30 pm. Mt Alvernia High opened their title defence with a massive 72-6 drubbing of former champions William Knibb Memorial in the first game, played at Mt Alvernia on Thursday. Tiana Wilson led all scorers with 27 points as Mt Alvernia sent a strong message that they will be hard to beat in going after consecutive titles. Five teams are taking part in the competition, including Herbert Morrison Technical, Holland High, and Montego Bay High School. The teams will play each other twice before the top two advance to the final. On Thursday, the champions restricted William Knibb Memorial to just two first-half points and led 21-2 and were up 38-2 at half-time, and 52-4 at the end of the third quarter. Two other Mt Alvernia players got into double digits scoring - Chrisania Thorpe scored 17 points and had six steals, and Ashley Amore scored 12 points, while Sashana Grey got eight points. Bryana Coleman scored four points and had six rebounds for William Knibb, while Nejrone Stephenson scored the other two points.
