From Xalapa to win  - Dec. 10, 2007
Halcones UV Xalapa will meet tonight Miami Tropics in what could be a pivotal game for all the "Group B" of Liga De Las Americas. The Tropics, in fact, are filled of talent, and seem very interested in advancing to the next leg of the tournment, while Halcones are at present the top ranked team in Mexican LNBP (their record is the best at 29-7) and feature very good domestic players like Victor Mariscal (198-F-72), Victor Avila (209-C-77, college: Oklahoma) and Omar Lopez (203-C-80, college: Cal.Baptist) plus talented imports like Sam Bowie (198-F/G-75, college: SE Louisiana) and Greg Plummer (193-G-83, college: Eckerd). Last week, the Halcones have been officially introduced to the State of Veracruz Governor, Mr. Fidel Herrera Beltran, and this will increase the motivation of all the "Falcons" to make as best as possible in this brand new competition.

The Tropics are waming their engine  - Dec. 10, 2007
The Miami Tropics are starting to round into shape as they prepare for the start of their "Group B" of the FIBA Liga De Las Americas on Tuesday night at FIU Arena. Some last time changes shaked up the team roster: Carlos Escalera (190-G-79, agency: Paris Global Sports, college: Missouri Southern), who was the Tropics' leading scorer in the ABA last season, was not allowed by FIBA to join the team because he is a native of Puerto Rico and has played in their pro league. Alvin Cruz (186-G-82, agency: Paris Global Sports, college: Niagara) was also not allowed to compete, and Marcus Barnes (188-G-81, college: Northeastern) left the team. This is why the Tropics brought in Brian Williams (185-G-76, agency: Interperformances, college: Alabama), an experienced point guard who has played in five foreign countries, and Tony Mitchell and Jermaine Watson (193-G-81, college: Boston Coll.) should be the starting guard duo. Instead, the team's frontcourt has been confirmed, and it will be made of Waldon B.B. (202-F-80, college: S.Florida) at the 3 position (with Stephen Walters (202-F-81, college: Morehouse) as his reserve), Terence Shellman (201-F-78) as the starting PF and Karel Rosario (206-C-77, college: Florida Intern.) in the center, with Sylbrin Robinson (201-F-80, college: Northeastern) and experienced Ja Ja Richards (207-C-75, agency: EM-PA, college: Loyola, IL) as their first replacements.

Fuerza Regia ready for Liga de las Americas  - Dec. 9, 2007
Fuerza Regia Monterrey traveled to Miami, where will compete in "Group B" of Liga de Las Americas. The team from Northern Mexico is in good shape, with a current 23-13 record in LNBP league, fifth in the global ranking. The head coach is Puertorican Jose 'Pepo' Martinez , and the top players areTeam Mexico PG Omar Quintero (183-G-81, agency: Paris Global Sports, college: S.Nazarene), Gerald Williams (190-G-68, college: New Orleans) and Chris Jackson (208-C-81, college: N.Mexico St.). Fuerza Regia will open the tournment meeting Capitanes de Arecibo from Puerto Rico tomorrow night at the Florida International University Arena. The other two teams of the Group are Halcones UV Xalapa and host team Miami Tropics

Cangrejeros dispatch Metros to stay tuned - Dec. 8, 2007
Cangrejeros - Metros 91:62

Puerto Rican Cangrejeros proved they are to be considered a big time threat at the Liga Americas scene. Yesterday they cruised past Metros de Eddin 'Guayito' Santiago (185-G-79, agency: Next Level, college: Missouri Southern) and improved to 2-1 record in Group A. This meant they went through to the next round and would continue to seek for the trophy in later stages. Cangrejeros opened the game quite vigorously and drove to a 7:0 lead less than two minutes into the game. David Diaz (189-G-78) finally hit a triple to open the scoring for Metros but it was quickly matched by Robert Traylor (204-F/C-77, college: Michigan)'s dunk and layups from Ricardo Dalmau (188-G-77). He later drained a three-pointer to mark an 18:8 lead for the hosts. Ricardo Dalmau completed his 9-point baggage in the opening frame and secured a 24:18 advantage for Cangrejeros. Metros began the second term much more aggressively and cut the gap to 2 points on David Diaz layup just over a minute into the period. However three triples from Michael Watson (186-G-80, college: Mo.-Kansas City) cooled the visitors off. Cangrejeros picked up a 40:29 advantage and capitalized on some confusion in Metro's defense to enlarge the gap to 19 points at halftime 50:31. Robert Traylor scored 7 first points for Puerto Rican team in the third stanza as they held on to the lead. Ricardo Dalmau hit a triple to make it a 63:42 game, but Joel Curbelo (186-G-74, agency: Next Level) matched well from beyond the arc to keep the deficit within 20-point territory. But Cangrejeroz used an 8:0 rally early in the fourth period to deny any possible comeback efforts from the visitors. Eddin 'Guayito' Santiago and Ricardo Dalmau buried consecutive long bombs midway through the quarter to seal the win for Cangrejeros. Ricardo Dalmau and Michael Watson led the action with 22 points apiece for Cangrejeros. Robert Traylor stepped up with 15 points and 10 boards in the second win for Puerto Rican side. Julio Solano (202-F/C-77) responded with 17 points and 9 boards for Metros. David Diaz had 11 points in defeat. Cangrejeros outrebounded their opponents 40:32 and converted 49% from the field.

Soles complete Group A action undefeated  - Dec. 8, 2007
Soles - PBL All Star 79:70

Mexican Soles remained unbeaten at the first stage of Liga Americas tournament. They faced PBL All Star that entered the game with 1-1 record. PBL used consecutive three-pointers from Edwin Tatum (193-G-81, college: Stephen F. Austin) to clear off early in the opening frame 12:4. A pair of successful plays for James Penny (198-F-76, college: TCU) allowed Mexican team to cut the gap to 5 points, but Edwin Tatum came up with another triple to keep PBL All Star side in front. However James Penny dunked the ball home and De Juan Wheat (183-G-73, college: Louisville) connected from beyond the arc as Soles came within a single point from PBL All Star. The teams exchanged the baskets to cap the first stanza and headed into the second term all square at 27. De Juan Wheat and James Penny combined for 5 straight points to start the second frame and lifted Soles up. Vasquez stepped up with some impressive three-pointers midway through the term to maintain the lead for Soles. Mexican side finished the first half with a bunch of free throws to make it 46:37 cushion at the interval. Soles posted a 7:0 rally to begin the second half with and enjoyed a 53:37 advantage 3 minutes into it. But PBL All Star responded with an 8:0 rally of their own to restore the margin. The game was pretty tense with a lot of fouls committed and the teams were mainly piling up points from charity stripe. But PBL All Star had a momentum late in the third stanza as Rafael Perez (185-G-82) and William Howard (196-G/F-84, college: N.Carolina A&T) stepped up with consecutive jumpers to pull American team within a single point 56:57. Sutton hit a jump shot for PBL All Star at the start of the final period as they surged ahead 58:57. The lead then changed hands for a couple of times before James Penny and Lopez produced 5 straight points and saw Soles clear off to a 5-point distance with 17 seconds left. Russell missed his long range attempt, while De Juan Wheat sealed the win from inside the paint.

  Soles go on 2-0 - Dec. 6, 2007
Mexican powerhouse Soles de Mexicali took their second consecutive win in "Liga de las Americas - Group A", clearly defeating Metros de Santiago, 94-83, confirming to be the hottest team in the qualifying group. The team from Baja California had James Penny (198-F-76, college: TCU) as the main performer, with 25 points and 11/15 from the field. De Juan Wheat (183-G-73, college: Louisville) added 20 points in the win and towering Horacio Llamas (211-C-73, agency: Interperformances) ended with 13 points and 12 rebounds. The best at the Dominican side was Julio Solano (202-F/C-77), with 15 pts and 8 rebounds, but the second loss prevents this team advancing to the quartefinals of teh competition. Instead, Soles is at the top of the table and its race could be stopped only by a large loss from PBL All Star in Day 3, something not probable.

  New league - big expectations - Dec. 3, 2007
There is a new initiative to start international club competition in both North and South Americas. FIBA America decided to organized 1st edition of Liga Americas (Liga das Americas), which will start on December 4th.
Due to distance problems, the clubs will be divided into 4 groups and each group will play a tournament in a different place.
The big favorites are clubs from Brazil and Argentina and Puerto Rico. Uruguay can make few surprises too. I would not rule out Mexican teams as well. At the other side it would be hard to count to favorites the clubs from Dominican Rep. or Chile. Bur the Liga Americas does not include too low-ranked clubs, like for example Liga Sudamericana does.
Worth to mention that U.S. pretty much ignored this tournament and will send semi-pro teams, which practically do not play in any league at all. So it will be kind of one-time assembly of various players, who could not make it to any reputable pro league.
But it seems it's very typical for U.S. basketball to ignore (or not being able) to send high-standard players to international competitions and in consequence also this time we can expect another blow to the reputation of American basketball.
PBL All Stars did not exist at all and we expect it would be just gathering of some players from semi-pro league PBL. The second U.S. team Miami Tropics used to play in USBL over 10 years ago and one season in ABA (called failure league or big "circus"). It's hard to predict which players these teams will be combined of. But no one knows for sure. It may happen than these semi-pro U.S. players would like to prove that they deserve being placed in pro leagues. So if some of them really impress, they could sign even contracts with some of pro teams from Latin America.
But we should be able to see the top club basketball from Latin America.
