Here is the weekly review of the top performing Mexican players, who play currently abroad.
#1. This week's number one is an international shooting guard
Francisco Cruz (191-89, college:
Wyoming, currently plays in Turkey). Cruz could not help
Afyon Bld (7-7) in their last game on Sunday. Despite his very good performance Afyon Bld was crushed
96-73 on the road by the lower-ranked Besiktas (#10).
Cruz was the top scorer with 22 points. He also added 4 passes.
It's Cruz's first season with the team.
Cruz has individually a very good year with high stats. He averages: 21.0ppg, 3.4rpg, 5.6apg, 1.7spg, 3FGP: 46.3%(44-95) and FT: 76.9%.
Ex-Fuerza Guinda Nogales player is currently a member of the Mexican senior national team.
#2. Second place goes to an experienced international guard
Jorge Gutierrez (191-88, college:
California, currently plays in Germany). Gutierrez was not able to help
BG Goettingen (3-0) in their last game. Despite his very good performance the league leader BG Goettingen lost
87-102 in Bonn to the leading Telekom Baskets.
Gutierrez was the second best scorer with 19 points. He also added 8 assists (went 5 for 5 at the free throw line) in 31 minutes.
But this is still an early stage of the season and everything may happen.
Gutierrez has relatively good stats this year: 12.3ppg, 2.4rpg, 5.0apg, 1.4spg, 3FGP: 27.3% and FT: 94.1%(32-34) in eight games he played so far.
Ex-Pioneros de Quintana Roo-Cancun player is in the roster of the Mexican senior national team.
#3. The Mexican player who performed third best last week abroad was an international forward
Juan Toscano-Anderson (198-93, agency:
BeoBasket, college:
Marquette, currently plays in NBA). He managed to help Golden State Warriors to win against the Detroit Pistons (0-4)
116-106 in the NBA in Tuesday night's game.
Toscano-Anderson recorded 5 points and added 4 assists.
The Golden State Warriors have 2-2 record this season.
But the season just started, so everything may happen.
Toscano-Anderson's overall stats this year are: 3.5ppg, 3.8rpg, 2.0apg, 3FGP: 66.7%.
He is a naturalized American.
Toscano-Anderson is also a member of the Mexican senior national team. He used to play for Fuerza Regia Monterrey in Mexican league.
#4. Swingman
Jaime Jaquez (198-1, currently plays college basketball in the States) contributed to
UCLA's surprising victory against the University of Utah (1-1)
72-70 in the NCAA last Thursday.
Jaquez scored 10 points and grabbed 5 rebounds in 34 minutes.
The University of California at Los Angeles have 2-0 conference record this season.
But the season is still in its first stage and everything can happen.
This year Jaquez has relatively solid stats: 13.3ppg, 5.9rpg and 1.8apg in eight games.
He used to play for the Mexican national team
back in 2019.
#5. International guard
Diego Willis (193-99, currently studies in the States) was not able to secure a victory for the
NJIT (1-1) in their game against the University of Vermont (2-2) in the NCAA.
Willis scored 8 points, grabbed 4 rebounds and dished 3 assists (was perfect 5-for-5 from the free throw line).
The NJIT was defeated
92-78 at home by the University of Vermont.
But the season is still in its first stage and everything can happen.
Willis' overall stats this season are: 3.3ppg, 1.5rpg and 1.3apg.
He plays currently for the Mexican national team.
One more player who has never been selected to any of national teams, but has Mexican passport: #1. Experienced
Gael Bonilla (201-G-3, currently plays in Adidas Next Generation Tournament) led his Spanish team
FC Barcelona to a victory over the closely-ranked ratiopharm U18 (3-1)
59-50 in the ANGT in Sunday night's game.
He was MVP of the game. Bonilla recorded 14 points, 7 rebounds, 5 assists and made 5 blocks in 32 minutes.
It was the game of the round between two top 4 ranked teams. FC Barcelona U18 team (4-0) is placed first in the ANGT.
So far his team won all four games in the Regular Season.
The Regular Season already ended in the ANGT.
