We bring you last week's top performances from Mexicans who are playing abroad and who all have had prior experience of national team duties at youth or senior level.
#1. This week's number one is an international guard
Luke Martinez (190-90, agency:
Pro Sports, college:
Wyoming, currently plays in Brazil). He was the major contributor in
Flamengo's victory against the 14th-ranked Campo Mourao (5-15)
93-74 in the Brazilian NBB in Monday night's game.
Martinez recorded 15 points, 7 rebounds and 2 blocks in 24 minutes on the court.
Clube de Regatas do Flamengo (4-0) is placed first in the NBB.
So far his team won all four games in the Regular Season.
It's Martinez's first season with the team.
This year he averages: 7.3ppg, 3.0rpg, 1.7apg, 2FGP: 66.7%, 3FGP: 35.7% in six games he played so far.
Martinez is a naturalized American.
He is currently a member of the Mexican senior national team. Martinez used to play for Rayos de Hermosillo in Mexican league.
#2. Second place goes to an international forward
Juan Toscano-Anderson (198-93, agency:
BeoBasket, college:
Marquette, currently plays in NBA). He led
Golden State Warriors to an easy victory against the Cleveland Cavaliers (10-19) crushing them
129-98 in the NBA last Monday.
Toscano-Anderson recorded 13 points and grabbed 5 rebounds.
The Golden State Warriors have 16-13 record this season.
Toscano-Anderson's overall stats this year are: 6.6ppg, 4.8rpg, 2.3apg, 2FGP: 63.3%(31-49), 3FGP: 42.3% and FT: 71.4%.
He is a naturalized American.
Toscano-Anderson is in the roster of the Mexican senior national team. He used to play for Fuerza Regia Monterrey in Mexican league.
#3. The Mexican player who performed third best last week abroad was an experienced former international swingman
Jaime Jaquez Jr. (198-1, currently plays college basketball in the States). Jaquez Jr. led
UCLA to a victory against the University of Arizona (12-2)
74-60 in the NCAA on Thursday night.
He recorded 25 points and grabbed 5 rebounds in 37 minutes.
The University of California at Los Angeles have a very solid 11-3 conference record this season.
There are only four games left until the end of the NCAA Regular Season. So now every game will be critical.
Jaquez Jr. has relatively good stats this year: 12.2ppg, 6.0rpg, 1.3apg, 1.3spg, 2FGP: 54.2%, 3FGP: 39.0% and FT: 65.3% in 20 games.
He played for the Mexican national team two years ago.
#4. Guard
Diego Willis (193-99, currently studies in the States) contributed to
NJIT's victory against the University of Hartford (3-8)
67-57 in the NCAA in Saturday night's game.
Willis scored 8 points, grabbed 7 rebounds and dished 3 assists.
The New Jersey Institute of Technology has 6-8 conference record this season.
There are only three games left until the end of the NCAA Regular Season. So now every game is very crucial.
Willis' overall stats this season are: 6.1ppg, 3.5rpg and 1.1apg.
He is also Mexican national team player.
#5. Former University international forward
Mauricio Cheda (198-90, college:
UTEP, currently plays in Spain) could not help the league outsider
JAC Sants (0-6) in their last game on Saturday. Despite his very good performance the seventh-placed JAC Sants (0-6) was badly defeated
91-73 in a derby game by the higher-ranked Barbera (#4) in the Group C3.
Cheda was the top scorer with 23 points. He also added 5 rebounds.
This season Cheda has relatively solid stats: 13.8ppg and 5.3rpg.
He has a dual citizenship: Mexican and Spanish.
Cheda used to play for the Mexican university national team
eight years ago.
One more player who has never been selected to any of national teams, but has Mexican passport: #1. Ian Hohenstein (201-F, currently plays in NCAA2). Hohenstein could not help the
Western New Mexico University (0-3) to beat the Lubbock Christian University (9-0).
He scored only 4 points in 16 minutes.
His team was crushed
101-61 on the road by the Christian University.
So far Western New Mexico University lost all three games in the Regular Season.
The Regular Season already ended in the NCAA2.
This year Hohenstein's overall stats are: 6.8ppg and 2.8rpg in four games he played so far.
