LNBPF Round 18: Escaramuzas defeat Phoenix

Here is the last round review presented by LBM Management.

The most crucial game of the last round was another loss of top-ranked Phoenix (3-10) at the home court on Sunday night. Hosts were rolled over by fourth ranked Escaramuzas (10-4) 74-40. Escaramuzas dominated down low during the game scoring 58 of its points in the paint compared to Phoenix's 34. Escaramuzas forced 22 Phoenix turnovers and had a 30-17 advantage in offensive rebounds. It was a good game for Argentinian center Johanna Puchetti (191-1987) who led her team to a victory with 19 points. Jhoana Moran (157-1993) contributed with 21 points for the winners. Thalia Perez replied with 6 points and 17 rebounds for Phoenix. Escaramuzas have a solid four-game winning streak. They maintain fourth position with 10-4 record. Phoenix lost sixth consecutive game. They still keep top place with ten games lost. Escaramuzas are looking forward to face Las Plebes (#10) in the next round where they are favorite. Phoenix will have a break next round.
An interesting game for Regias (15-1) which hosted in Santiago their close opponent Racers (0-14). Second ranked Regias had an easy win 71-37. Cuban Anisleydy Galindo scored 15 points, 6 rebounds, 7 assists and 5 steals to lead the charge for the winners and Yamara Amargo chipped in 14 points and 9 rebounds during the contest. The best for the losing side was American guard Takoia Larry (180-1991, college: TxWes) with 16 points and 9 rebounds. Regias have an impressive five-game winning streak. They maintain second position with 15-1 record having just twelve point less than leader Phoenix which they share with defeated Racers. Newly promoted Racers still closes the standings with 14 games lost. Regias will have a break next round, and it should allow them to practice more before next game. Racers will play against Algodoneras and hope to get finally their first victory.
An interesting game for Lobas (13-3) which hosted in Ciudad de Mexico top-ranked Lenadoras (3-13). Third ranked Lobas managed to get a 12-point victory 77-65. Ingrid Martinez notched a double-double by scoring 19 points, 10 rebounds and 5 assists to lead the effort. Lobas' coach Israel Zermeno used entire bench which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Even 21 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists by Fernanda Fausto did not help to save the game for Lenadoras. Lobas have a solid three-game winning streak. Defending champion maintains third position with 13-3 record having just ten point less than leader Phoenix. Lenadoras lost eighth consecutive game. They still keep top place with 13 games lost. Lobas will meet Atleticas (#6) in the next round. Lenadoras will play against Teporacas (#5) and hope to secure a win.

There were no big surprises in other games of round 18: Barreteras lost to undefeated Mieleras on the road 67-88. Quetzales destroyed Mexcaltecas on its own court 95-72. Atleticas were outscored by Teporacas in a road game 76-48.
The most impressive performance of 18th round was 16 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists by Mabel Martinez of Teporacas.

Lobas outrebounded Lenadoras 46-33 including 35 on the defensive glass. The former international swingman Ingrid Martinez (175-1995) notched a double-double by scoring 19 points, 10 rebounds and 5 assists to lead the effort and Cuban center Yayma Boulet (193-1984) supported her with 18 points and 14 rebounds. Mieleras - Barreteras 88-67

No shocking result in a game when top-ranked Mieleras (16-0) crushed 11th ranked Barreteras (5-11) in Guanajuato 88-67 on Sunday. Mieleras forced 23 Barreteras turnovers. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 25 assists. American forward Destiny Campbell (185, college: ECU) notched a double-double by scoring 23 points, 12 rebounds and 4 blocks to lead the effort and the former international guard Brisa Silva (170-1984, college: OK State) supported her with 18 points and 7 assists. Four Mieleras players scored in double figures. Even 15 points and 5 rebounds by guard Alma Dominguez (163-1997) did not help to save the game for Barreteras. Monica Moguel added 14 points. The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. Mieleras have an impressive 16-game winning streak. They maintain first position with 16-0 record. Barreteras lost third consecutive game. They keep the eleventh place with 11 games lost. Mieleras will meet Mexcaltecas (#8) in the next round and are hoping to win another game. Barreteras will play against Quetzales and hope to secure a win.

We cannot really consider it an upset in the game between close teams when 7th ranked Mexcaltecas (6-9) were smashed by eighth ranked Quetzales (6-8) in Ciudad de Mexico 95-72 on Sunday. Quetzales looked well-organized offensively handing out 27 assists. Cuban center Clenia Noblet (190-1987) notched a double-double by scoring 27 points, 10 rebounds and 6 assists to lead the effort and American guard Estela Gutierrez (, college: Bethesda) supported her with 9 points, 10 rebounds and 7 assists. Four Quetzales players scored in double figures. Quetzales' coach Gerardo Sanchez felt very confident using 10 players and allowed the starting five to rest. Even 23 points (went 10 for 10 at the free throw line !!!) by Sofia Payan (167-2000) did not help to save the game for Mexcaltecas. Guard Diana Ramirez (165-1997) added 13 points and 7 rebounds. Quetzales moved-up to seventh place. Mexcaltecas at the other side dropped to the eighth position with nine games lost. Quetzales will meet Barreteras (#11) in the next round. Mexcaltecas will play against the league's leader Mieleras where they are definitely not considered as a favorite in this game either.

Teporacas' coach Angel Gonzalez felt very confident using 11 players and allowed the starting five to rest. Even 18 points and 7 steals by the former international point guard Abril Roldan (168-2002) did not help to save the game for Atleticas. Dominican center Yamile Rodriguez (188-1994, college: ETSU) added 5 points and 10 rebounds. Teporacas maintains fifth position with 10-6 record. Atleticas at the other side keep the sixth place with eight games lost. Teporacas will meet league's leader Lenadoras in the next round and it may be quite challenging game. Atleticas will play against Lobas (#3) and hope to secure a win.
