The most surprising game was a loss of Tijuana Zonkeys (4-1) on the court of Frayles de Guasave on Friday night. Visitors were defeated by Frayles de Guasave 110-100. Frayles shot the lights out from three sinking 20 long-distance shots on high 51.3 percentage. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 28 assists. It was a good game for American point guard David Sloan (183-1999, college: ETSU) who led his team to a victory with 25 points and 9 assists. His fellow American import guard Michael Henry (198-1995, college: Buffalo St., agency: Haylett Sports) contributed with 21 points, 7 rebounds and 5 assists for the winners. Brazilian center Joao Franca (215-1998) answered with a double-double by scoring 26 points and 10 rebounds for Tijuana. Frayles de Guasave is looking forward to face Tijuana (#3) at home in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Tijuana Zonkeys will play against Los Mochis and are hoping to win this game.
Important game to mention about took place in Guasave. Rayos de Hermosillo (5-0) saved a 2-point victory on the road edging Frayles de Guasave (1-4) 92-90 on Wednesday evening. Guest team only slightly avoided a big embarassment. American players dominated the game. It was a great evening for forward Derek Culver (208-1998, college: WVU) who led his team to a victory scoring 20 points and 7 rebounds (on 7-of-8 shooting from the field). Antino Jackson helped adding 16 points and 5 assists. Rayos de Hermosillo's coach Walter McCarty allowed to play the deep bench players in such tough game. The best for the losing side was point guard David Sloan (183-1999, college: ETSU) with 23 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists. Rayos de Hermosillo will play against Mazatlan (#5) on the road in the next round. Frayles de Guasave will play against Tijuana to get more than just one victory in their record.
A very close game took place in Ciudad de Mexico between Halcones de Ciudad Obregon and Angeles. Halcones de Ciudad Obregon (3-2) got a very close victory on the road over Angeles (1-4). Halcones de Ciudad Obregon managed to escape with a 2-point win 91-89 on Friday evening. It was an exceptional evening for Tanksley Efianayi who led the winners and scored 31 points. Johnny Hughes III came up with a double-double by scoring 23 points and 13 rebounds for Angeles in the defeat. Halcones de Ciudad Obregon will have a break next round, and it should allow them to practice more before next game. Angeles will play against Obregon (#4) and hope to win that game.
There were no big surprises in other games of round 3: Mazatlan smashed Los Mochis on the road 112-87. Culiacan lost to Tijuana on its own court 81-88. Angeles lost to undefeated Astros in Guadalajara 102-110. Mazatlan lost to undefeated Hermosillo at home 91-109. Astros defeated Los Mochis on the opponent's court 86-82. Bottom-ranked Guaymas beat Culiacan in a home game 89-84.
