CIBACOPA Round 1 (Regular Season): #1 Angeles are defeated by Astros

The Regular Season in CIBACOPA just started. Here is the last round review presented by Job Market.

The most crucial game of the last round was a loss of Angeles in Guadalajara on Tuesday night. Visitors were rolled over by Astros 107-74. Astros forced 21 Angeles turnovers. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 24 assists. Venezuelan forward Michael Carrera (196-1993, college: S.Carolina, agency: BIG) stepped up and scored 9 points, 9 rebounds and 4 assists for the winners and American forward Chris Perry (203-1994, college: LMU) chipped in 17 points and 4 steals. At the losing side American guard Dayon Griffin (195-1995, college: UCF) responded with 15 points and 4 assists. The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. Astros is again looking forward to face Angeles in Ciudad de Mexico in the next round. Angeles will play at home against Frayles and are hoping to win this game.
Very significant was Guaymas' 91-87 road victory against Tijuana. Americans were the main players on the court. Guard Xavier Pinson (190-2000, college: NM State) nailed 16 points, 8 rebounds and 7 assists for the winning side and Isaiah Powell accounted for 26 points. Guard Shane Rector (188-1994, college: Utah St.) came up with 16 points and 4 assists for Tijuana Zonkeys in the defeat. Tijuana Zonkeys' coach tried various players' combinations and tested in total eleven players in this game, but that didn't help. Guaymas will play against Obregon in Ciudad Obregon in the next round and it will be for sure the game of the week. Tijuana will play on the road against Hermosillo and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
A very close game took place in Nuevo Laredo between Toros and Venados. Toros got a very close home victory over Venados. Toros managed to escape with a 3-point win 90-87 on Sunday evening. Host team only slightly avoided a big embarassment. Jordan Glynn fired 21 points and 9 rebounds for the winners. Latrell Jones produced 22 points for lost side. Toros will meet at home Los Mochis in the next round and are hoping to win another game. Venados will have a break next round.

There were no shocking results in the rest of the games of round 1: Mazatlan lost to Toros on the opponent's court 79-102. Los Mochis lost to Obregon in a home game 86-97. Hermosillo lost to Frayles on the road 86-98. Los Mochis lost to Obregon on its own court 87-96.




Toros - Mazatlan 102-79

Very expected game in Nuevo Laredo where Venados were crushed by Toros 102-79 on Saturday. Toros made 20-of-22 free shots (90.9 percent) during the game. Americans were the main players on the court also this time. Forward Jordan Glynn (200-1989, college: SF Austin) fired a double-double by scoring 21 points and 10 rebounds (made all of his seven free throws) for the winners. Swingman Austin Wrighten (192-1996, college: Lynchburg) chipped in 18 points and 5 rebounds. Wrighten is a former Eurobasket Summer League player, which is considered top international summer league in the market. Toros' coach felt very confident that he used 11 players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Guard Clyde Trapp (193-1998, college: Charlotte, agency: MSG) produced 14 points and 7 rebounds and guard Latrell Jones (196-1998, college: Nicholls) added 16 points respectively for lost side. Toros will meet at home Los Mochis in the next round and are hoping to win another game. Venados will have a break next round.
