LSB Round 15: Costa Caribe is defeated by Leones in a derby game

Here is the last round review presented by ESL.

The most exciting game was a derby match between two local teams from Managua: Leones (#4) and Costa Caribe (#4). Costa Caribe was defeated at home 72-78 and even the advantage of their own court did not help. Leones dominated down low during the game scoring 52 of its points in the paint compared to Costa Caribe's 30. Leones forced 24 Costa Caribe turnovers. It was a great evening for Puerto Rican guard Jorge Matos (185-92) who led his team to a victory scoring 39 points (!!!) and 4 steals. Puerto Rican Xavier Zambrana (193-91) helped adding 13 points, 14 rebounds and 6 assists. The best for the losing side was Cuban forward Yoel Cubillas (204-94) with a double-double by scoring 27 points and 15 rebounds. Leones have a solid series of three victories in a row. They moved-up to third place. Costa Caribe at the other side dropped to the fifth position with six games lost.

It was an exceptional evening for the former international point guard Dalton Cacho (190-93) who led the winners with a double-double by scoring 13 points and 13 rebounds. Jezreel De Jesus accounted for 13 points, 5 rebounds and 8 assists. Cuban forward Yoel Cubillas (204-94) came up with a double-double by scoring 15 points and 14 rebounds for Costa Caribe in the defeat. Both coaches used bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Real Esteli have an impressive series of eight victories in a row. They maintain first place with 13-2 record. Costa Caribe at the other side dropped to the fifth position with six games lost.

In the last two games of round 15 Bufalos lost to Jinotega on the opponent's court 85-96. Bufalos managed to outperform Chinandega in a home game 80-72.
The most impressive stats of the last round was 22 points, 21 rebounds and 4 blocks by Marc Montavious of Chinandega.



Costa Caribe - Leones 72-78

Costa Caribe - Real Esteli 67-81

The game between Top Four teams took place in Managua. 4th placed host Costa Caribe (8-6) lost to first ranked Real Esteli (13-2) 81-67. Real Esteli held Costa Caribe to an opponent 24.7 percent shooting from the field compared to 41.2 percent accuracy of the winners. They outrebounded Costa Caribe 59-45 including a 46-29 advantage in offensive rebounds. It was an exceptional evening for the former international point guard Dalton Cacho (190-93) who led the winners with a double-double by scoring 13 points and 13 rebounds. Puerto Rican guard Jezreel De Jesus (185-91, agency: Interperformances) accounted for 13 points, 5 rebounds and 8 assists for the winning side. Jinotega - Bufalos 96-85

Rather expected game when 8th ranked Bufalos (4-11) were defeated on the road by fifth ranked Jinotega (9-7) 96-85. It was an exceptional evening for Cuban Oreste Torres (204-87) who led the winners and scored 26 points and 7 rebounds. The former international Dayton Cacho (186-91) accounted for 26 points for the winning side. Cuban forward Yuniskel Molina (183-93) came up with 27 points, 9 rebounds and 6 assists and the former international guard Armando Martinez (190-89) added 12 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists respectively for Bufalos in the defeat. Five Bufalos players scored in double figures. Both coaches tested many bench players and allowed the starting five to rest. Jinotega moved-up to fourth place. Bufalos at the other side keep the eighth position with 11 games lost.

Bufalos - Chinandega 80-72

The game between closely ranked teams ended with eighth ranked Bufalos' (4-11) home victory over bottom-ranked Chinandega (2-13) 80-72. Bufalos shot 22 for 34 from the free-throw line, while Chinandega only scored three points from the stripe. Their players were unselfish on offense dishing 22 assists. Chinandega was plagued by 24 personal fouls down the stretch. It was an exceptional evening for Cuban forward Yuniskel Molina (183-93) who led the winners and scored 32 points, 6 rebounds and 8 assists. The former international guard Armando Martinez (190-89) accounted for 16 points and 7 rebounds for the winning side. Bufalos' coach allowed to play the deep bench players saving starting five for next games. American center Marc Montavious (206-90, college: Georgetown, KY) came up with a double-double by scoring 22 points, 21 rebounds and 4 blocks and the other American import Marcus Faison (196-94, college: Salem St.) added 20 points, 11 rebounds and 5 assists respectively for Chinandega in the defeat. Bufalos maintains eighth place with 4-11 record. Chinandega lost their fourth game in a row. They stay at the bottom position with 13 games lost.
