LSB Round 3: Real Esteli defeat Brumas

The most crucial game of the last round was a loss of Brumas (3-1) in Jinotega on Wednesday night. Hosts were rolled over by Real Esteli (3-0) 95-71. Real Esteli outrebounded Brumas 53-37 including a 42-25 advantage in offensive rebounds. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 21 assists. It was a good game for Puerto Rican guard Ismael Cruz (190-2001, college: Indian Hills) who led his team to a victory with 31 points and 9 rebounds. Guard Alonso Ortiz contributed with 20 points, 9 rebounds and 5 assists for the winners. Dominican Xavier de la Rosa (196-1991) answered with 19 points, 9 rebounds and 4 assists for Brumas. The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. Real Esteli are looking forward to face Leon (#9) in the next round and are hoping to win another game. Brumas will play against Jaguares (#1) in Managua and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
Important game to mention about took place in . UNI Basket (2-1) saved a 3-point victory on the road edging Leon (0-4) 106-103 on Wednesday evening. It was a great evening for Puerto Rican point guard Luis Rivera (180-1998) who led his team to a victory scoring 40 points (!!!), 5 rebounds and 4 assists. Scott Sill helped adding 12 points, 13 rebounds and 6 assists. The best for the losing side was center Douglas Cortez with a double-double by scoring 29 points, 10 rebounds and 8 assists. UNI Basket will play against Caribbean Coast (#7) in Managua in the next round. Leon will play at home against Real Esteli and hopes to get finally their first victory.
Jaguares (4-0) had no problems winning another game on Thursday. This time they crushed Occidentales (1-3) in Chinandega 111-80. It was a quality performance for Timothy Simmons who led the winners and scored 27 points and 4 steals (on 11-of-14 shooting from the field). Deikel Sanchez came up with a double-double by scoring 15 points and 12 rebounds for Occidentales in the defeat. Since the result was very predictable, it gave the chance for the coaches to test many bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Jaguares will meet at home Brumas (#3) in the next round, which may be the game of the day. Occidentales will play against Rivas (#10) and it may be a tough game between close rivals.

In the last two games of round 3 Leones MGA beat Rivas on the road 84-79. Indigenas destroyed Caribbean Coast on its own court 97-72.

Rivas - Leones MGA 79-84

No shocking result in a game when Leones MGA (2-1) beat on the road Rivas (0-4) 84-79 on Wednesday. Leones MGA made 19-of-25 free shots (76.0 percent) during the game. They also forced 20 Rivas turnovers. It was an exceptional evening for American forward Josmel Martinez (198, college: Broward CC) who led the winners with a double-double by scoring 34 points (!!!) and 18 rebounds. Puerto Rican point guard Luis Gonzalez (183-1997, college: PR-Bayamon) accounted for 24 points and 6 assists for the winning side. Cuban Yosniel Morales (196-1987) came up with a double-double by scoring 15 points and 20 rebounds and guard Fritz Cox added 21 points respectively for Rivas in the defeat. Five Rivas players scored in double figures. Rivas' coach rotated ten players in this game, but that didn't help. Leones MGA will meet Indigenas (#6) in the next round. Rivas will play against Occidentales (#8) in Chinandega and look forward to get finally their first victory.

We cannot really consider it an upset in the game between close teams when Caribbean Coast (1-2) was smashed by Indigenas (2-2) in Matagalpa 97-72 on Thursday. Indigenas forced 19 Caribbean Coast turnovers and outrebounded them 48-35 including 31 on the offensive glass. It was an exceptional evening for Dominican Jeffry Arias who led the winners and scored 39 points (!!!) and 4 steals. Dominican power forward Teodoro Romero (202-1990) accounted for 25 points and 17 rebounds for the winning side. American forward Chris Blake (195-1988, college: Detroit) came up with a double-double by scoring 19 points, 10 rebounds and 4 assists and the other American import guard Jeremy Agosto (177-1997) added 27 points respectively for Caribbean Coast in the defeat. Since the result was very predictable, it gave the chance for the coaches to test many bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Indigenas will meet at home Leones MGA (#4) in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Caribbean Coast will play against UNI Basket and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
