Leon - UNI Basket 98-97 This derby game ended with only one-point defeat on the road of 4th placed UNI Basket (12-10) to seventh ranked Leon (8-11) 98-97 on Tuesday evening. The best player for the winners was Puerto Rican guard Antonio Ralat (188, college: UAB) who had a double-double by scoring 26 points and 10 rebounds. Puerto Rican forward Edwin Rivera (201-1998, college: Parkland CC) chipped in 21 points and 5 rebounds. Leon's coach used a ten-player rotation in such tough game. Puerto Rican power forward Owens Perez (206-1992) produced a double-double by scoring 23 points and 14 rebounds and the former international guard Vansdell Thomas (185-1986) added 28 points and 5 rebounds respectively for the guests. Four Leon and five UNI Basket players scored in double figures. Leon maintains seventh place with 8-11 record. UNI Basket at the other side keeps the fourth position with ten games lost. Leon are looking forward to face higher ranked Brumas (#3) in Jinotega in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. UNI Basket will have a break next round. Local Occidentales (4-17) were outscored by second ranked Jaguares (16-5) 101-60. Jaguares dominated down low during the game scoring 78 of its points in the paint compared to Occidentales' 42. They outrebounded Occidentales 63-32 including a 40-24 advantage in offensive rebounds. American center Leon Hampton (213-1995, college: Stillman) orchestrated the victory with a double-double by scoring 21 points, 14 rebounds and 4 blocks. His fellow American import guard Byron Wesley (196-1992, college: Gonzaga) contributed with 18 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists for the winners. Hampton is a former Eurobasket Summer League player, which is considered top international summer league in the market. Five Jaguares players scored in double figures. Puerto Rican guard Roberto Nieves (194-1982, college: Valpo) answered with 23 points and Mauro Guerrero added 10 points and 5 rebounds in the effort for Occidentales. The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. Jaguares maintains second place with 16-5 record having four points less than leader Real Esteli. Occidentales at the other side keep the ninth position with 17 games lost. Jaguares will play against Indigenas (#8) in Matagalpa in the next round which should be theoretically another easy game. Occidentales will have a break next round.
