LPB Round 5: Derby game ends with Panteras' defeat of Halcones

Here is the last round review presented by Job Market.

The most exciting game was a derby match between two local teams from Panama City: Panteras (#5) and Halcones (#4). Panteras (1-3) won against visiting Halcones (2-2) 80-75. Panteras looked well-organized offensively handing out 23 assists. 25 personal fouls committed by Halcones helped opponents get some easy free throw opportunities. Swingman Alejandro Grant (199-93) orchestrated the victory with a double-double by scoring 19 points and 12 rebounds. Dominican point guard Raimer Santana (183-97) contributed with 21 points and 6 assists for the winners. American guard Guiressi Grimes (191-88, college: WAU) answered with a double-double by scoring 19 points and 17 rebounds for Halcones. Both coaches used bench players in such tough game. Panteras maintains fifth place with 1-3 record, which they share with Caballos. Halcones at the other side dropped to the third position with two games lost. They share it with Dragones. Panteras is looking forward to face bottom-ranked Toros (#7) in David in the next round. Halcones' supporters also look forward to another derby game next round, where their team will travel locally in Panama City to the arena Dragones.

It ended at the same time the two-game winning streak of Dragones. Bryan Flores stepped up and scored 27 points and 7 rebounds for the winners and Daniel King chipped in 14 points, 12 rebounds, 4 assists and 4 blocks. Gil Atencio (202-96, college: St.Clair) responded with a double-double by scoring 16 points and 12 rebounds. Dragones' coach rotated ten players in this game, but that didn't help. Atletico have a solid series of four victories in a row. They maintain first place with 4-0 record, which they share with Correcaminos. Newly promoted Dragones keep the third position with two games lost. They share it with Universitarios. Atletico will play against Caballos (#6) in Aguadulce in the next round which should be theoretically an easy game. Dragones' supporters look forward to another derby game next round, where their team will face at home their local rival from Panama City Halcones.
The game between leader Correcaminos (4-0) and 5th ranked Panteras (1-3) in Colon on Thursday ended with biggest points difference. Correcaminos outscored guests from Panama City 96-64. Jaime Lloreda nailed 20 points, 9 rebounds and 5 assists for the winning side. Alejandro Grant came up with a double-double by scoring 20 points, 12 rebounds and 4 assists for Panteras in the defeat. The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. Correcaminos have a solid series of four victories in a row. They keep a position of league leader, which they share with Atletico Nacional. Loser Panteras keep the fifth place with three games lost. They share the position with Caballos. Correcaminos will meet at home bottom-ranked Toros (#7) in the next round which should be theoretically another easy game. Panteras will play against Toros and it may be a tough game between close rivals.

The most impressive performance of 5th round was 10 points, 18 rebounds and 5 assists by Yosimar Stewart of Correcaminos.



Panteras - Universitarios 80-75

Another exciting game was again a derby between two teams from Panama City: Atletico (#1) and Dragones (#3). Atletico (4-0) won against visiting Dragones (2-2) 80-75. It ended at the same time the two-game winning streak of Dragones. Atletico made 19-of-22 charity shots (86.4 percent) during the game. Dragones were plagued by 25 personal fouls down the stretch. Bryan Flores stepped up and scored 27 points and 7 rebounds for the winners and power forward Daniel King (203-87, college: Texas Southern) chipped in 14 points, 12 rebounds, 4 assists and 4 blocks. Gil Atencio (202-96, college: St.Clair) responded with a double-double by scoring 16 points and 12 rebounds and forward Pablo Rivas (198-94, college: NCCU) scored 19 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists.
