Puerto Rico began August with a gold medal. Brazil reaches the next World Cup qualifying window unbeaten, while Uruguay has a 5–1 record and the standout player from the opening round.

All three are back in action on 27 August. Argentina hosts Puerto Rico, Brazil faces the Dominican Republic in Brasília and Uruguay welcomes the Bahamas to Montevideo as the second round of the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2027 Americas Qualifiers gets underway.

Puerto Rico Arrives With Momentum

Puerto Rico's latest game ended with a trophy. The team beat the Dominican Republic 94–75 on 4 August to win men's basketball gold at the Central American and Caribbean Games. Felipe Quiñones scored 25 points in the final, shooting 8-of-14 from the field, as Puerto Rico finished the tournament in convincing fashion. The 94–75 gold-medal victory also gave the squad meaningful competitive minutes only a few weeks before World Cup qualifying resumes.

The timing helps too. Puerto Rico moves almost immediately from tournament basketball into another competitive window, with recent minutes for the rotation rather than a long gap between games. The 2–4 qualifying record still leaves work to do, but the squad goes into Mar del Plata with a successful August tournament already behind it.

The Argentina Test Comes Next

Puerto Rico enters the second round with a 2–4 record, so the trip to Mar del Plata carries more weight than most of its early-August games. Argentina went 5–1 in the opening stage and has won five of its past six meetings with Puerto Rico dating back to 2014. The most recent was an 82–77 Argentina win in the 2025 AmeriCup quarter-finals.

Puerto Rico has not missed a World Cup since 1982. Keeping that run intact will require results against teams sitting much higher in Group F, beginning with Argentina.

Brazil Has Set The Early Pace

Brazil is the only Latin American team entering the second round at 6–0. Its first six victories came twice each against Colombia, Chile and Venezuela, with an average winning margin of 18.3 points.

The Dominican Republic visits Brasília on 27 August after going 4–2 in the opening round, before Brazil travels to face Mexico four days later. FIBA includes the Brazil-Dominican Republic meeting among its key games to watch in Window 4.

Brazil also comes into the window as reigning AmeriCup champion, so the unbeaten qualifying run follows recent tournament success. Wins over the Dominican Republic and Mexico would take Brazil to 8–0 before the later qualifying windows.

Starting from 6–0 also changes the task. Brazil is not trying to repair an uneven opening round or make up an early deficit. The challenge is to maintain the consistency already shown across six games as the strength of opposition changes in the second stage.

Uruguay Has Become One Of The Stories Of The Campaign

Uruguay's campaign has had a clear centerpiece: Joaquín Rodríguez. The guard was named First Round MVP after averaging 15.8 points, 6.2 rebounds and 6.7 assists per game, while his efficiency rating of 21.7 was the second-highest of the opening stage.

Rodríguez was part of a Uruguay side that also produced one of the round's more striking results, holding Argentina to 44 points in a 61–44 victory. The 5–1 record represented the best first-round campaign in Uruguay's Americas Qualifiers history.

For a country chasing its first World Cup appearance since 1986, that opening stage has given Uruguay a position to protect rather than ground to make up.

The Bahamas Comes To Montevideo

The next job is straightforward. Uruguay is 5–1 and the Bahamas is 2–4. A win at home would keep Uruguay alongside the leading teams in Group F, where Canada sits at 6–0 and Argentina also enters the round at 5–1.

The next round could change the order.

Argentina-Puerto Rico and Uruguay-Bahamas are two of the games to watch from a Latin American perspective. Puerto Rico arrives with the freshest trophy but also the most ground to make up. Uruguay is protecting one of the strongest records in the group, while Brazil, over in Group E, has yet to lose.

The fixtures also have a betting angle for fans who follow basketball through more than scores and standings. Conventional sportsbooks may offer markets around outcomes, point spreads and totals, while prediction platforms provide another way to track expectations around a game. Polymarket is among the services reviewed by Sportsbook Review, whose coverage looks at its sports markets and wider platform features. For readers familiar with online betting or casino sites, prediction markets sit within the broader gambling conversation, although they work differently from a conventional sportsbook or online casino.

Puerto Rico now has to find out whether its early-August form carries into Mar del Plata. Uruguay has a home opportunity to build on its first-round record, while Brazil starts the second stage protecting the only perfect mark among the region's contenders.

Brazil enters Window 4 at 6–0, Uruguay and Argentina at 5–1 and Puerto Rico at 2–4 with a new gold medal in hand. The next set of results arrives on 27 August.
