Here is the last round review presented by ESL.

The most important game of round 1 took place in Arecibo where Capitanes beat Cariduros (0-1) 104-100 on Tuesday night. The hosts trailed by 1 point after first quarter, but they rallied back to get the 3-point lead at the halftime and eventually won the game 104-100. Capitanes made 26-of-33 free shots (78.8 percent) during the game. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 21 assists. 29 personal fouls committed by Cariduros helped opponents get some easy free throw opportunities. Naturalized U.S. Virgin Islands point guard Walter Hodge (183-86, college: Florida) stepped up and scored 34 points (!!!) and 5 assists for the winners and the former international swingman David Huertas (195-87, college: Mississippi) chipped in 20 points, 6 rebounds and 8 assists. At the losing side the former international point guard Carlos Arroyo (188-79, college: FIU, agency: Interperformances) responded with 27 points and 9 assists (made all of his thirteen free throws !!!). Both coaches used bench players in such tough game.

The former international swingman Angel-Daniel Vassallo (198-86, college: Virginia Tech) came up with a double-double by scoring 18 points, 10 rebounds and 5 assists for Leones in the defeat. Leones' coach rotated ten players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games.

Piratas defeated Leones in Quebradillas 101-87. The game was mostly controlled by Piratas. Leones was better in third quarter 30-23. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Their players were unselfish on offense dishing 23 assists. Piratas brought some defensive toughness making 8 blocks. American guard Tu Holloway (183-89, college: Xavier) nailed 28 points and 6 assists (made all of his seven free throws) for the winning side and his fellow American import forward Reyshawn Terry (203-84, college: N.Carolina) accounted for 13 points, 12 rebounds and 5 assists. The former international swingman Angel-Daniel Vassallo (198-86, college: Virginia Tech) came up with a double-double by scoring 18 points, 10 rebounds and 5 assists and Jamaican-American power forward Adrian Uter (201-84, college: Hofstra, agency: BeoBasket) added 17 points and 8 rebounds respectively for Leones in the defeat. Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. Leones' coach rotated ten players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games.

The most crucial game of the last round was a loss of Santeros (0-1) in Bayamon on Tuesday night. Visitors were defeated by Vaqueros (1-0) 92-79. The game was mostly controlled by Vaqueros. Santeros managed to win third quarter 27-22. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Vaqueros looked well-organized offensively handing out 21 assists. Cuban center Ismael Romero (203-91) fired 17 points and 6 rebounds for the winners. The former international Javier Mojica (190-84, college: Cent.Conn.St.) chipped in 12 points, 6 rebounds and 6 assists. International Christopher Gaston (201-89, college: Fordham) produced 16 points and 7 rebounds (made all of his seven free throws) and American guard Semaj Christon (190-92, college: Xavier) added 16 points and 7 assists respectively for lost side. Five Vaqueros and four Santeros players scored in double figures.

On day two of free agency there were signings by Ponce, Bayamon, Mayagueez and Aguada. Ponce retained Cliff Duran (191-G-89) by signing him to a three-year deal. Duran averaged 5.1 points and 2.1 assists in 34 games last season. He is expected to play in Liga de las Americas and BSN. Bayamon signed guard Hector Maldonado (185-G-91). There were three signings at the start of the BSN free agency period. Aguada signed guard Filiberto Rivera (189-PG-82, college: UTEP) to a two-year deal. The veteran guard averaging 6.73 points and 2.7 assists in 30 games during the regular season with Fajardo. He currently plays for Angeles de Puebla in Mexico. BSN free agency begins today as some top veterans are available for teams to sign. The league is scheduled to start on March 1 and end in mid-July. So far the confirmed teams are Arecibo, Aguada, Bayamon, Guayama, Fajardo, Ponce, Mayaguez and Quebradillas. San German could return if the offer to buy the team is accepted by the board of directors.
