We bring you last week's top performances from Puerto Ricans who are playing abroad and who all have had prior experience of national team duties at youth or senior level.


Gian Clavell

   #1. This week's number one is an international guard Gian Clavell (193-93, college: Colorado St., currently plays in Spain). He led Movil Estudiantes to a victory over the closely-ranked CB Canarias (3-2) 81-73 in the Spanish Liga Endesa in Saturday night's game. Clavell was MVP of the game. He scored 25 points in 25 minutes on the court; quite an impressive performance considering it's only Clavell's second season in pro basketball. Movistar Estudiantes Madrid (3-0) is placed second in the Liga Endesa. So far his team won all three games in the Regular Season. But this is still an early stage of the season and everything may happen. Clavell has relatively good stats this year: 13.0ppg, 1.8rpg, 2FGP: 46.7% and FT: 73.3% in four games he played so far. He is currently a member of the Puerto Rican senior national team.

Carlos Rivera

   #2. Second place goes to an experienced international point guard Carlos Rivera (187-83, college: Hofstra, currently plays in Mexico). Rivera contributed to a Fuerza Regia's victory against the seventh-ranked Huracanes (0-3) 85-77 in the Mexican LNBP (second division) last Friday. He recorded 14 points and added 5 passes. Fuerza Regia Monterrey (3-2) is placed second in North group. But the season just started, so everything may happen. It's Rivera's first year with the team. This season Rivera has relatively solid stats: 11.2ppg, 2.6rpg, 4.2apg, 1.8spg, 3FGP: 46.7%(7-15) and FT: 83.3%. Ex-Atleticos de San German player is in the roster of the Puerto Rican senior national team.

   #3. The Puerto Rican player who performed third best last week abroad was an international power forward Ricardo Sanchez (212-87, currently plays in Brazil). He could not help Brasilia (8-8) to beat Mogi (3-1). Sanchez recorded 7 points in 31 minutes. Brasilia lost 82-97 on the road to the higher-ranked (#3) Mogi. It was Brasilia's third consecutive loss in a row. But the season is still in it's first stage and everything can happen. It's Sanchez's first year with the team. This season his overall stats are: 5.8ppg, 4.3rpg, 1.3apg, 2FGP: 26.7%, 3FGP: 25.0% in four games. Ex-Cangrejeros de Santurce player is also a member of the Puerto Rican senior national team.

Jose Juan Barea

   #4. Point guard Jose Juan Barea (183-84, college: Northeastern, currently plays in NBA) helped Dallas Mavericks win their game against the Minnesota Timberwolves (2-4) 140-136 in the NBA in Saturday night's game. Barea recorded a double-double by scoring 12 points and making 11 passes. The Dallas Mavericks have 2-3 record this season. But there are still lots of games to play and it's a long way to go. Barea is one of the most experienced players in a team as it's his fifth year in Mavericks' roster. He has reliable stats this season: 8.0ppg, 2.4rpg and 7.4apg. Barea is also Puerto Rican national team player.

   #5. International swingman David Huertas (195-87, college: Mississippi, currently plays in Mexico) is a teammate of previously mentioned Carlos Rivera. But that was another game of his team in Mexican LNBP which we would like to mention. Huertas helped Fuerza Regia win their game against the leader Mineros (4-1) 87-84. He scored 15 points and added 3 assists in 36 minutes. It was the game of the round between two top 3 ranked teams in group North. Fuerza Regia Monterrey (3-2) is placed second. Huertas has individually a very good year with high stats. He averages: 18.0ppg, 2.5rpg and 3.5apg in four games. Huertas plays currently for the Puerto Rican national team.

   #6. Point guard Shabazz Napier (185-91, college: Connecticut, currently plays in NBA) was not able to help the Brooklyn Nets (2-3) in their last game. Despite his very good performance the Brooklyn Nets (2-3) were edged 117-115 in New Orleans by the Pelicans. Napier scored 16 points in a mere 15 minutes. Napier has very impressive stats this year: 12.0ppg and 1.5spg in two games. He has a dual citizenship: Puerto Rican and American. Napier is a former international player as he played for the Puerto Rican senior team two years ago. Strangely he has never played in Puerto Rico.

   #7. International forward Christopher Ortiz (203-93, agency: Inception Sports, college: Kent St., currently plays in Finland) was not able to secure a victory for Helsinki Seagulls (1-1) in their last game. Despite Ortiz's good performance Helsinki Seagulls was crushed 96-73 on the opponent's court by the higher-ranked (#5) Lapuan_Korikobrat. He scored 12 points and grabbed 8 rebounds in 25 minutes. This year Ortiz's total stats are: 8.5ppg and 5.5rpg in two games. He is another player who holds two passports: Puerto Rican and American. Ortiz used to play for the Puerto Rican national team last year. He played also for Santurce in Puerto Rican league.

Carlos Lopez-Sosa

   #8. Forward Carlos Lopez-Sosa (208-90, college: UNLV, currently plays in Mexico) couldn't help the league outsider Angeles (0-5) in their last game on Friday. Despite Lopez-Sosa's very good performance the seventh-placed Angeles (0-5) was crushed 96-70 in Michoacan by the second-ranked Aaguacateros in the South group. He recorded a double-double by scoring 16 points and getting 10 rebounds. Lopez-Sosa also added 3 assists. It's Lopez-Sosa's first season with the team. This year he has very high stats. Lopez-Sosa averages: 16.4ppg, 8.4rpg and 1.6apg. He plays currently for the Puerto Rican national team.

   #9. Former international swingman Maurice Harkless (203-93, college: St.John's, currently plays in NBA) managed to help Portland Trail Blazers to win against the San Antonio Spurs (2-2) 121-108 in the NBA on Saturday night. He scored 5 points and grabbed 8 rebounds. The Portland Trail Blazers have 3-1 record this season. Harkless has been at the team for four years. Harkless has averaged so far 4.3ppg and 5.0rpg. He has both American and Puerto Rican nationalities. Harkless used to play for the Puerto Rican national team two years ago. Apparently he has never played in Puerto Rico.

Guard Gary Browne (185-93, college: W.Virginia, currently plays in FIBA Europe Cup) helped his Israeli team Ironi Nes-Ziona win their game against the closely-ranked Den Bosch (1-1) 91-85 in the FIBA Europe Cup in Wednesday night's game. Browne scored 10 points, grabbed 4 rebounds and dished 3 assists in 27 minutes. It was the game of the round between two top 4 ranked teams. Ironi Hai Motors Nes-Ziona (1-1) is placed second in the FIBA Europe Cup. There are only four games left until the end of the FIBA Europe Cup Regular Season. So now every game will be critical. Browne has averaged so far 7.5ppg, 3.8rpg and 5.7apg in six games. He also holds two passports: Puerto Rican and American. Browne is an international player who is currently on the senior Puerto Rican National Team roster. He used to play for Coamo in Puerto Rican league.

   #11. Former international point guard Wilfredo Pagan (184-76, currently plays in Mexico) is a teammate of previously mentioned Carlos Rivera and both played together in the last Mexican LNBP game. Pagan helped Fuerza Regia win their game against the seventh-ranked Huracanes 85-77. He recorded 7 points. Pagan has averaged so far 2.4ppg and 1.4apg. He holds both American and Puerto Rican passports. Pagan used to play for the Puerto Rican national team sixteen years ago. He played also for Brujos de Guayama in Puerto Rican league.

   #12. Former U18 international shooting guard Wil Martinez (188-92, college: Fairmont St., currently plays in Panama) was the main contributor in Halcones' victory against the league outsider Toros crushing them 102-73 in the Panamanian LPB in Tuesday night's game. He was the best player in that game. Martinez recorded 19 points and added 4 assists. This season Martinez has very high stats. He averages: 18.7ppg, 1.5rpg, 1.6apg and 1.4spg. Martinez holds both American and Puerto Rican passports. He used to play for the Puerto Rican U18 national team back in 2010. Martinez played also for San German in Puerto Rican league.

   #13. Former international point guard Alvin Cruz (186-82, college: Niagara, currently plays in Panama) couldn't help one of league's weakest teams Caballos (7-6) in their last game on Saturday. Despite his very good performance Caballos was edged 78-76 in Colon by the second-ranked Correcaminos. Cruz was the top scorer with 20 points. He also added 8 rebounds and dished 8 assists. This season Cruz has very high stats. He averages: 20.5ppg, 5.1rpg and 5.2apg. Cruz used to play for the Puerto Rican national team thirteen years ago.

   #14. Former U19 international small forward Nate Butler Lind (198-89, college: TCU, currently plays in Panama) is a teammate of previously mentioned Alvin Cruz. However that was another game of his team in Panamanian LPB which brought him to that list. Butler Lind helped Caballos win their game against one of league's weakest teams Aguilas 85-80. He was the top player that evening. Butler Lind recorded 21 points, 4 rebounds, 4 assists and 5 steals in 36 minutes. Butler Lind's stats this year are: 11.2ppg, 6.1rpg and 4.0apg in 11 games. He used to play for the Puerto Rican U19 national team back in 2007.

   #15. International forward Angel Matias (193-92, college: Georgia South, currently plays in Panama) is a teammate of previously mentioned Alvin Cruz. He played also in the last Panamanian LPB game facing Nate Butler Lind (above) in the other team. Matias was the major contributor in Caballos' victory against one of league's weakest teams Aguilas 85-80. He recorded 18 points, 9 rebounds and 4 assists. This season Matias has very high stats. He averages: 15.9ppg, 6.6rpg and 2.4apg. Matias holds both American and Puerto Rican passports. He is also in the roster of the Puerto Rican national team. Matias used to play for Humacao in Puerto Rican league.


The list of other players, who all have Puerto Rican passport but never been selected to any of Puerto Rican national teams:

   #1. Kyle Vinales (185-G-92, agency: 011 Sports, college: Cent.Conn.St., currently plays in FIBA Europe Cup) led his Cypriot team AEK Larnaca to a victory over the closely-ranked Belfius Mons-Hainaut (0-2) 83-78 in the FIBA Europe Cup on Wednesday night. He was the best player in that game. Vinales scored 31 points (!!!). It was the game of the round between two top 4 ranked teams. Petrolina AEK Larnaca (1-1) is placed third in the FIBA Europe Cup. There are only four games left until the end of the FIBA Europe Cup Regular Season. So now every game will be critical. It's Vinales' first season with the team. He has individually a very good year with high stats. Vinales averages: 21.0ppg, 3.0rpg, 3.0apg and 2.0spg. He has a dual citizenship: Puerto Rican and American. Vinales used to play for Bayamon in Puerto Rican league.

   #2. Ivan Aska (201-F-90, college: Murray St., currently plays in Greece) contributed to a Kolossos HH's victory against the closely-ranked Kymis (1-2) 97-90 in the Greek A1 last Saturday. Aska recorded a double-double by scoring 13 points and getting 10 rebounds. Kolossos H Hotels (1-2) is placed 12th in the A1. Aska's total stats this season are: 9.7ppg, 5.3rpg and 1.3apg. He is another player who holds two passports: U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rican.

   #3. Jorge Matos (185-G-92, currently plays in Panama) was the main contributor in Panteras' victory against the league outsider Toros (1-12) crushing them 84-53 in the Panamanian LPB last Sunday. Matos was the best player in that game. He scored 23 points, had 6 rebounds and dished 5 assists (went 7 for 7 at the free throw line) in 37 minutes. Panteras de Costa del Este Panama City (8-0) is placed first in the LPB. So far his team won all eight games in the Regular Season. There are only two games left until the end of the Regular Season. So now every game is very crucial. Matos' stats this year are: 14.5ppg, 7.6rpg and 5.1apg in 13 games he played so far.

   #4. Benito Santiago (198-F-89, college: Cumberlands, currently plays in Panama) is a teammate of previously mentioned Jorge Matos and both played together in the last Panamanian LPB game. Santiago helped Panteras win their game against the league outsider Toros (1-12) crushing them 84-53. He scored 19 points, made 4 passes and 4 steals in 31 minutes. Santiago has very impressive stats this year: 18.0ppg, 4.5rpg, 4.0apg and 3.0spg in two games.

   #5. Jose Guitian (207-F-87, college: Lasell, currently plays in Mexico) could not help Correcaminos (0-3) in their last game. Despite his very good performance Correcaminos (#6) lost 94-98 at home to the higher-ranked (#3) Laguneros in the North group. Guitian recorded 16 points and grabbed 7 rebounds in 32 minutes. So far Correcaminos lost all three games in the Regular Season. Guitian's stats this year are: 10.3ppg and 5.7rpg in three games. He has both American and Puerto Rican nationalities. Guitian used to play for Leones de Ponce in Puerto Rican league.

   #6. Emanuel Ubilla (188-PG-86, agency: Court Side, college: Fair Dickinson, currently plays in Greece) faced previously mentioned Ivan Aska in the Greek A1 last game. Ubilla was not able to help Kymis in their game against Kolossos HH. He scored 7 points in 30 minutes. His team lost 90-97. Ubilla has averaged so far 7.3ppg and 3.0rpg in three games. He also holds two passports: Puerto Rican and American. Ubilla used to play for Atleticos de San German in Puerto Rican league.

   #7. Joseph Soto (190-G-93, currently plays in Mexico) was not able to secure a victory for Lenadores (3-2) in their last game on Thursday. Despite his good performance Lenadores (#4) was defeated 91-86 on their home court in by the leading Mineros in the North group. Soto recorded 12 points and added 9 passes. Soto's stats this season are: 13.2ppg, 1.8rpg, 6.4apg and 1.8spg. He holds both Puerto Rican and Mexican passports.

San German - Aguada 67-84 Aguada beat San German to open 2-0 lead. The game without a history. Santeros led from the first minutes and controlled entire game increasing their lead in each quarter. They dominated down low during the game scoring 52 of its points in the paint compared to Atleticos' 32. Strangely Atleticos outrebounded Santeros 46-33 including 32 on the defensive glass. Aguada - San German 99-73 Aguada stormed past San German to surge ahead in the series. The game was mostly controlled by Santeros. Atleticos managed to win second period 15-13.
