Traditionally, every week we bring you a list of the top performances of Puerto Ricans who are currently playing abroad.


David Huertas

   #1. This week's number one is an international swingman David Huertas (195-87, college: Mississippi, currently plays in Mexico). He could not help Fuerza Regia (12-6) in their last game. Despite Huertas' very good performance the second-placed Fuerza Regia (12-6) was edged 114-111 on the road by the lower-ranked (#4) Panteras in the North group. He was the top scorer with 29 points in 33 minutes on the court. It's Huertas' first season with the team. Huertas has individually a very good year with high stats. He averages: 19.1ppg, 3.3rpg, 3.5apg, 2FGP: 46.3% and FT: 78.8% in 16 games he played so far. Huertas is currently a member of the Puerto Rican senior national team.

Renaldo Balkman

   #2. Second place goes to an experienced former international forward Renaldo Balkman (203-84, college: S.Carolina, currently plays in ASEAN League). He led his Filipino team SM Beermen to a victory over the closely-ranked CLS Knights (2-4) crushing them 94-67 in the ASEAN League on Sunday night. Balkman was MVP of the game. He had a double-double by scoring 33 points and getting 11 rebounds. Balkman also added 3 assists, 3 blocks and 3 steals in 31 minutes. It was his first game for SM Beermen this season. His team is placed seventh in the ASEAN League. But this is still an early stage of the season and everything may happen. Balkman has a dual citizenship: Puerto Rican and American. He played for the Puerto Rican national team in 2016. Balkman used to play for Guayama in Puerto Rican league.

Carlos Rivera

   #3. The Puerto Rican player who performed third best last week abroad was an international point guard Carlos Rivera (187-83, college: Hofstra, currently plays in Mexico) is a teammate of previously mentioned David Huertas and both played together in the last Mexican LNBP game. Rivera. He was not able to help Fuerza Regia (12-6) in their last game on Thursday. Despite Rivera's very good performance Fuerza Regia (#2) was edged 114-111 in Aguascalientes by the lower-ranked Panteras (#4) in the North group. He recorded a double-double by scoring 17 points and making 10 passes. Rivera also added 5 rebounds. Rivera has relatively good stats this season: 12.3ppg, 3.1rpg, 4.8apg, 1.3spg, 2FGP: 52.7%, 3FGP: 45.6%(31-68) and FT: 83.3%. Ex-Atleticos de San German player is also a member of the Puerto Rican senior national team.

Jose Juan Barea

   #4. Point guard Jose Juan Barea (183-84, college: Northeastern, currently plays in NBA) contributed to a Dallas Mavericks' victory against the Atlanta Hawks (6-22) 114-107 in the NBA last Wednesday. He scored 18 points and added 3 assists in a mere 16 minutes. The Dallas Mavericks have 15-12 record this season. But the season just started, so everything may happen. Barea is one of the most experienced players in a team as it's his fifth year in Mavericks' roster. Barea has very impressive stats this season: 11.4ppg, 2.4rpg and 5.4apg in 25 games. He is also Puerto Rican national team player.

   #5. International guard Gary Browne (185-93, college: W.Virginia, currently plays in FIBA Europe Cup) helped his Israeli team Ironi Nes-Ziona win their game against the fourth-ranked Levski Lukoil (0-1) 98-89 in the FIBA Europe Cup on Wednesday night. Browne recorded 14 points, 6 rebounds and 3 assists. Ironi Hai Motors Nes-Ziona (1-0) is placed first in group J. Browne's overall stats this season are: 7.8ppg, 4.2rpg and 5.8apg. He is another player who holds two passports: Puerto Rican and American. Browne plays currently for the Puerto Rican national team. He used to play for Coamo in Puerto Rican league.

   #6. Point guard Wilfredo Pagan (184-76, currently plays in Mexico) is a teammate of previously mentioned David Huertas. He played also in the last Mexican LNBP game facing Carlos Rivera (above) in the other team. Pagan was not able to secure a victory for Fuerza Regia (12-6) in their last game on Thursday. Despite his good performance Fuerza Regia (#2) was edged 114-111 in Aguascalientes by the lower-ranked Panteras (#4) in the North group. Pagan scored 11 points. Pagan's overall stats this season are: 3.6ppg, 1.7rpg and 1.8apg. He has both American and Puerto Rican nationalities. Pagan is a former international player as he played for the Puerto Rican senior team sixteen years ago. He used to play for Brujos de Guayama in Puerto Rican league.

Ethan Thompson

   #7. Former U18 international shooting guard Ethan Thompson (197-99, currently plays college basketball in the States) couldn't help the Oregon St. in their game against the Saint Louis University in the NCAA, despite his very good performance on Sunday night. Thompson had a double-double by scoring 22 points and getting 11 rebounds. He also added 3 assists and 3 steals in 38 minutes. Buthis team lost 61-65 at home to the Saint Louis University. This year Thompson has relatively solid stats: 13.1ppg, 6.0rpg, 2.6apg and 1.5spg in eight games. He also holds two passports: Puerto Rican and American. Thompson used to play for the Puerto Rican U18 national team two years ago. Strangely he has never played in Puerto Rico.

Christopher Ortiz

   #8. Forward Christopher Ortiz (203-93, agency: Inception Sports, college: Kent St., currently plays in Finland) was the main contributor in a Helsinki Seagulls' victory against one of league's weakest teams Lapuan Korikobrat (4-10) crushing them 104-81 in the Finnish Korisliiga in Friday night's game. Ortiz was the best player in that game. He recorded a double-double by scoring 27 points and getting 10 rebounds. Ortiz also added 4 assists (went 7 for 7 at the free throw line); quite an impressive performance considering it's only his third season in pro basketball. Helsinki Seagulls (5-7) is placed ninth in the Korisliiga. But the season is still in it's first stage and everything can happen. This season Ortiz has very high stats. He averages: 16.6ppg, 6.0rpg and 1.6apg. Ortiz holds both American and Puerto Rican passports. He used to play for the Puerto Rican national team last year. Ortiz played also for Santurce in Puerto Rican league.

Maurice Harkless

   #9. Former international swingman Maurice Harkless (203-93, college: St.John's, currently plays in NBA) couldn't help the Portland Trail Blazers (16-13) in their game against the Houston Rockets (13-14) in the NBA. He scored 9 points, grabbed 4 rebounds and made 2 blocks in 31 minutes. But the Portland Trail Blazers (16-13) lost 104-111 in Houston to the Rockets. It was Trail Blazers' third consecutive loss in a row. Harkless has been at the team for four years. This season Harkless' overall stats are: 4.6ppg and 3.5rpg in 16 games. He holds both American and Puerto Rican passports. Harkless used to play for the Puerto Rican national team two years ago. Apparently he has never played in Puerto Rico.

   #10. Power forward Ricardo Sanchez (212-87, currently plays in Brazil) couldn't help Brasilia (3-9) in their game against Sao Jose (5-8) in the Brazilian NBB. Sanchez cannot count Thursday's game as one of the best ones. He recorded only 3 points. The bottom-ranked Brasilia was defeated 87-75 in Sao Jose by the higher-ranked Sao Jose (#8). Sanchez's total stats this season are: 7.8ppg, 3.4rpg and 1.9apg. He is an international player who is currently on the senior Puerto Rican National Team roster.

   #11. Former international point guard Filiberto Rivera (189-82, college: UTEP, currently plays in Mexico) helped Angeles win their game against the third-ranked Lenadores 80-76 in the Mexican LNBP (second division) last Thursday. He scored 15 points, grabbed 6 rebounds and dished 3 assists. Rivera has reliable stats this season: 11.3ppg, 3.3rpg and 3.6apg. He used to play for the Puerto Rican national team four years ago.

   #12. Former U16 international guard Eric Ayala (196-99, currently studies in the States) helped Maryland win their game against the Loyola College crushing them 94-71 in the NCAA in Tuesday night's game. He scored 13 points, had 6 rebounds and dished 7 assists. Ayala's total stats this season are: 8.5ppg, 2.6rpg and 3.3apg. He holds both American and Puerto Rican passports. Ayala used to play for the Puerto Rican U16 national team back in 2015. Interesting that he has never played in Puerto Rico.

   #13. International forward Juan Ramon Rivas (203-94, agency: Duran International, college: N.Georgia, currently plays in Spain) couldn't help Tormes in their game against Zornotza in the Spanish LEB Silver (third division), despite his very good performance last Friday. Rivas was the top scorer with 31 points. He also added 6 rebounds in 34 minutes. But his team was edged 72-69. Rivas' stats this year are: 11.1ppg and 7.0rpg in 13 games. He is also Puerto Rican national team player.

   #14. U19 international guard Jorge Pacheco-Ortiz (185-98, is currently at the American university) helped Liberty win their game against the South Carolina State University crushing them 79-55 in the NCAA in Tuesday night's game. Pacheco-Ortiz scored 18 points and added 3 passes in 24 minutes. This year his total stats are: 7.0ppg, 1.2rpg and 2.1apg in 10 games. Pacheco-Ortiz used to play for the Puerto Rican U19 national team last year.

   #15. International guard Gian Clavell (193-93, college: Colorado St., currently plays in Spain) helped Movil Estudiantes edge the 14th-ranked Burgos 80-79 in the Spanish Liga Endesa last Sunday. He scored 8 points. Clavell averaged so far 13.2ppg and 2.2rpg. He is also in the roster of the Puerto Rican national team.


The list of other players, who all have Puerto Rican passport but never been selected to any of Puerto Rican national teams:

   #1. Kyle Vinales (185-G-92, college: Cent.Conn.St., currently plays in Cyprus) led AEK Larnaca to a victory over the league leader Keravnos (7-2) 100-95 in the Cypriot Division A last Sunday. He was MVP of the game. Vinales scored 30 points (!!!) and grabbed 4 rebounds. It was the game of the round between two top 4 ranked teams. Petrolina AEK Larnaca (6-2) is placed second in the Division A. Vinales has relatively good stats this season: 15.0ppg, 2.9rpg and 2.0apg. He has a dual citizenship: Puerto Rican and American. Vinales used to play for Bayamon in Puerto Rican league.

   #2. Walter Hodge (183-PG-86, college: Florida, currently plays in Lebanon) could not help Homentmen (3-1) in their last game. Despite Hodge's good performance Homentmen lost 72-78 on the road to the lower-ranked (#5) Al Moutahed. He recorded 12 points and added 5 passes in 28 minutes. It was Homentmen's first loss after three consecutive victories. There are only two games left until the end of the Regular Season. So now every game will be critical. Hodge has individually a very good year with high stats. He averages: 16.8ppg, 4.3rpg and 6.0apg in four games he played so far. Hodge is another player who holds two passports: U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rican.

   #3. Jhivvan Jackson (183-PG, currently plays college basketball in the States) contributed to an easy victory against the Mid-America Christian University (5-8) crushing them 104-74 in the NCAA in Saturday night's game. Jackson scored 28 points (!!!), had 6 rebounds and dished 3 assists in 25 minutes. The The Univ.of Texas - San Antonio has conference record this season. Jackson has very impressive stats this year: 18.7ppg, 2.2rpg and 1.8apg in six games.

   #4. Jojo Walker (185-G-97, currently studies in the States) contributed to Portland's victory against the Sacramento State University 76-67 in the NCAA on Saturday night. Walker scored 22 points and added 4 assists in 33 minutes. The University of Portland has conference record this season. Walker's stats this year are: 13.8ppg, 3.5rpg and 4.0apg in 11 games.

   #5. Stephen Thompson Jr. (193-G-97, is currently at the American university), who plays in the NCAA was not able to help the Oregon St. in their last game on Sunday. Despite Thompson Jr.'s good performance his team was defeated 65-61 at home by the Saint Louis University. He recorded 10 points, 4 rebounds and 5 assists. Thompson Jr. plays fourth season for the team. This year Thompson Jr. has very high stats. He averages: 16.1ppg, 3.6rpg, 3.5apg and 2.0spg. Thompson Jr. has both American and Puerto Rican nationalities. However he has never played in Puerto Rico.

   #6. Melsahn Basabe (201-PF-92, college: Iowa, currently plays in Israel) was not able to secure a victory for Hapoel Kfar Saba (2-6) in their last game on Tuesday. Despite Basabe's good performance Hapoel Kfar Saba was badly defeated 91-74 in Ashkelon by the higher-ranked Ironi (#9). He recorded a double-double by scoring 14 points and getting 11 rebounds. This season Basabe has very high stats. He averages: 15.6ppg, 11.0rpg and 1.3apg. Basabe also holds two passports: Puerto Rican and American. Despite his Puerto Rican nationality, Basabe previously played for the USA U19 national team and is probably not eligible to play for the Puerto Rican team. He used to play for Humacao Caciques in Puerto Rican league.

   #7. Ebube Ebube (201-F-97, currently plays college basketball in the States), who plays in the NCAA couldn't help the Manhattan in their last game. Despite Ebube's good performance his team was crushed 80-50 in Hermpstead by the Hofstra University. He scored 10 points and grabbed 4 rebounds in 25 minutes. Ebube has averaged so far 6.1ppg, 6.2rpg and 1.1apg in nine games.

   #8. Neftali Alvarez (188-G, currently plays college basketball in the States) couldn't help the Fairfield in their game against the Old Dominion University in the NCAA. He recorded only 4 points and added 4 passes in 26 minutes. His team lost 69-79. Alvarez averaged so far 14.3ppg, 3.9rpg, 3.6apg and 2.0spg in 10 games.

   #9. Jose Martinez (208-F, currently plays college basketball in the States) managed to help University of San Diego in a victory against the Cal State - Northridge 82-68 in the NCAA in Sunday night's game. He recorded only 2 points in 10 minutes. Martinez has averaged so far 2.8ppg and 1.6rpg in 10 games.

   #10. Denilson Fonseca (190-G-98, currently plays in Luxembourg) contributed to a Basket Esch's victory against the closely-ranked Racing 74-70 in the Luxembourg Total League on Sunday night. He scored only one point in 13 minutes. This year Fonseca averages only 0.9ppg in 11 games.

CHANE BEHANAN American Chane Behanan (198-F-92) had a great game in the last week for San German and that's him to receive a Interperformances Player of the Week award for week 4. The 26-year old forward had the game-high 23 points adding five rebounds and eight assists for San German in his team's victory, helping them to edge out Mayaguez (#7, 2-4) 110-107. There were many interesting games last round. The round ended with favorites losing the games, games ending by tiny margin and even winless team recording their first victory. Here is the last round review presented by ESL. The most exciting game of round 4 in the BSN took place in Guayama. This derby game ended with only three-point home defeat of 6th ranked Brujos (2-5) to first ranked Piratas (6-1) 89-86 on Thursday evening. Guest team only slightly avoided a big embarassment.
