Here is the weekly review of the top performing Puerto Rican players, who play currently abroad.

   #1. This week's number one is an experienced international point guard Carlos Rivera (187-83, college: Hofstra, currently plays in Mexico). He was the major contributor in a Fuerza Regia's victory against the leader Capitanes (13-7) 96-92 in the Mexican LNBP (second division) in Friday night's game. Rivera recorded 23 points, 5 assists and 6 steals in 30 minutes on the court. It was the game of the round between two top 3 ranked teams in group North. Fuerza Regia Monterrey (15-6) is placed second. It was his team's fourth consecutive victory in a row. It's Rivera's first season with the team. He has relatively good stats this year: 12.2ppg, 2.9rpg, 4.6apg, 1.5spg, 2FGP: 53.0%, 3FGP: 44.4% and FT: 84.7% in 21 games he played so far. Ex-Atleticos de San German player is currently a member of the Puerto Rican senior national team.

Renaldo Balkman

   #2. Second place goes to former international forward Renaldo Balkman (203-84, college: S.Carolina, currently plays in ASEAN League). Balkman led his Filipino team SM Beermen to a victory over the closely-ranked CLS Knights (2-6) 88-80 in the ASEAN League last Sunday. He was MVP of the game. Balkman recorded a double-double by scoring 36 points and getting 12 rebounds. He also added and 4 steals. San Miguel Beermen (3-0) is placed sixth in the ASEAN League. So far his team won all three games in the Regular Season. They will play only one more game in the ASEAN League Regular Season. And that game will be critical. Balkman has individually a very good season with high stats. He averages: 34.5ppg, 11.5rpg, 2.0apg, 1.5bpg, 3.5spg, 2FGP: 58.5%(24-41). Balkman has a dual citizenship: Puerto Rican and American. He played for the Puerto Rican national team in 2016. Balkman used to play for Guayama in Puerto Rican league.

Ricardo Sanchez

   #3. The Puerto Rican player who performed third best last week abroad was an international power forward Ricardo Sanchez (212-87, currently plays in Brazil). He could not help Brasilia (3-10) to beat Paulistano (9-4). Sanchez scored 7 points, grabbed 5 boards, dished 3 assists and stole 4 balls in 24 minutes. The bottom-ranked Brasilia was edged 83-82 on the road by the much higher-ranked (#5) Paulistano. This year Sanchez's overall stats are: 7.7ppg, 3.5rpg, 2.0apg, 2FGP: 41.7%, 3FGP: 40.4% and FT: 92.9% in 13 games. Ex-Cangrejeros de Santurce player is also a member of the Puerto Rican senior national team.

Jose Juan Barea

   #4. Point guard Jose Juan Barea (183-84, college: Northeastern, currently plays in NBA) was not able to help the Dallas Mavericks (15-15) in their last game on Thursday. Despite his very good performance the Dallas Mavericks (15-15) were defeated 125-121 in Los Angeles by the Clippers. Barea was the second best scorer with 19 points. He also added 8 assists. Barea is one of the most experienced players in a team as it's his fifth year in Mavericks' roster. This season Barea has very high stats. He averages: 11.7ppg, 2.5rpg and 5.5apg. Barea is also Puerto Rican national team player.

   #5. International guard Gary Browne (185-93, college: W.Virginia, currently plays in Israel) contributed to an Ironi Nes-Ziona's surprising victory against the second-ranked Hapoel Holon (7-3) 88-78 in the Israeli Winner League last Saturday. He recorded 19 points, 7 rebounds and 7 assists in 32 minutes. Ironi Hai Motors Nes-Ziona (4-6) is placed eighth in the Winner League. This year Browne has relatively solid stats: 13.2ppg, 6.9rpg and 5.2apg in nine games. He is another player who holds two passports: Puerto Rican and American. Browne plays currently for the Puerto Rican national team. He used to play for Coamo in Puerto Rican league.

   #6. Swingman David Huertas (195-87, college: Mississippi, currently plays in Mexico) is a teammate of previously mentioned Carlos Rivera. But that was another game of his team in Mexican LNBP which we would like to mention. Huertas contributed to an easy victory against the fourth-ranked Panteras (11-10) 94-76. He scored 17 points and added 3 assists in 32 minutes. Fuerza Regia Monterrey (15-6) is placed second in North group. It was his team's fourth consecutive victory in a row. Huertas has very impressive stats this year: 18.5ppg, 3.5rpg, 3.3apg and 1.1spg in 19 games. He is an international player who is currently on the senior Puerto Rican National Team roster.

   #7. Former international center Peter Ramos (222-85, currently plays in ASEAN League) is a teammate of previously mentioned Renaldo Balkman and both played together in the last ASEAN League game. Ramos contributed to a SM Beermen's victory against the closely-ranked CLS Knights (2-6) 88-80. He recorded a double-double by scoring 25 points and getting 11 rebounds. This season Ramos has very high stats. He averages: 22.5ppg, 12.0rpg and 3.5apg. Ramos has both American and Puerto Rican nationalities. He used to play for the Puerto Rican national team two years ago. Ramos played also for Criollos de Caguas in Puerto Rican league.

Filiberto Rivera

   #8. Point guard Filiberto Rivera (189-82, college: UTEP, currently plays in Mexico) was not able to secure a victory for Angeles (6-15) in their last game. Despite his very good performance the seventh-placed Angeles (6-15) was edged 93-91 at home by the higher-ranked (#3) Lenadores in the South group. Rivera was the top scorer with 25 points. He also added 4 boards, passed 5 assists and added 5 steals in 37 minutes. It was Angeles' fifth consecutive loss in a row. Rivera has reliable stats this year: 12.4ppg, 3.3rpg, 4.0apg and 1.3spg in 15 games. He used to play for the Puerto Rican national team back in 2014.

   #9. International forward Carlos Lopez-Sosa (208-90, college: UNLV, currently plays in Mexico) is a teammate of previously mentioned Filiberto Rivera and both played together in the last Mexican LNBP game. Lopez-Sosa couldn't help Angeles (6-15) in their last game on Saturday. Despite his very good performance Angeles (#7) was edged 93-91 on their home court in Puebla by the higher-ranked Lenadores (#3) in the South group. Lopez-Sosa was the second best scorer with 24 points. He also added 7 rebounds and made 3 blocks. This season Lopez-Sosa has very high stats. He averages: 16.9ppg, 7.9rpg and 2.7apg. Lopez-Sosa is also in the roster of the Puerto Rican national team.

   #10. Swingman Maurice Harkless (203-93, college: St.John's, currently plays in NBA) helped Portland Trail Blazers win their game against the Los Angeles Clippers (18-13) 131-127 in the NBA last Monday. He scored 13 points and grabbed 4 rebounds in 30 minutes. The Portland Trail Blazers have 18-14 record this season. They ended the series of three consecutive loses. Harkless has been at the team for four years. This season Harkless' total stats are: 5.3ppg and 3.4rpg in 19 games. He also holds two passports: Puerto Rican and American. Harkless is a former international player as two years ago he still played for the Puerto Rican senior national team. Strangely he has never played in Puerto Rico.

   #11. International forward Christopher Ortiz (203-93, agency: Inception Sports, college: Kent St., currently plays in Finland) was the main contributor in a Helsinki Seagulls' victory against one of league's weakest teams Lapuan Korikobrat crushing them 104-81 in the Finnish Korisliiga on Friday night. Ortiz was the best player in that game. He recorded a double-double by scoring 27 points and getting 10 rebounds. Ortiz also added 4 assists (went 7 for 7 at the free throw line). This season he has very high stats. Ortiz averages: 17.2ppg, 5.7rpg and 1.4apg. He holds both American and Puerto Rican passports. Ortiz used to play for the Puerto Rican national team last year. He played also for Santurce in Puerto Rican league.

   #12. International guard Gian Clavell (193-93, college: Colorado St., currently plays in Spain) couldn't help Movil Estudiantes (6-5) in their last game. Despite Clavell's very good performance Movil Estudiantes lost 81-91 in Santiago de Comp to the lower-ranked (#12) Blusens Monbus. He was the second best scorer with 17 points. Clavell also added 3 passes in 22 minutes. His stats this year are: 13.5ppg, 2.1rpg and 1.1apg in 11 games. Clavell is also in the roster of the Puerto Rican national team.

   #13. Former international point guard Wilfredo Pagan (184-76, currently plays in Mexico) is a teammate of previously mentioned Carlos Rivera. He played also in the last Mexican LNBP game facing David Huertas (above) in the other team. Pagan helped Fuerza Regia win their game against the fourth-ranked Panteras 94-76. He scored 9 points and added 3 assists. Pagan has averaged so far 3.8ppg, 1.6rpg and 1.8apg. He holds both American and Puerto Rican passports. Pagan used to play for the Puerto Rican national team sixteen years ago. He played also for Brujos de Guayama in Puerto Rican league.

   #14. Former U18 international shooting guard Ethan Thompson (197-99, currently plays college basketball in the States), who plays in the NCAA couldn't help the Oregon St. in their last game on Saturday. Despite his very good performance his team was edged 67-64 in College Station by the Texas A&M University. Thompson recorded 20 points. Thompson's stats this season are: 12.6ppg, 5.4rpg, 2.4apg and 1.2spg. He holds both American and Puerto Rican passports. Thompson used to play for the Puerto Rican U18 national team back in 2016. Apparently he has never played in Puerto Rico.

   #15. U19 international guard Jesus Cruz (196-98, currently studies in the States), who plays in the NCAA couldn't help the Fairfield in their last game on Sunday. Despite Cruz's good performance his team was defeated 77-67 on their home court in Fairfield by the Boston College. He scored 10 points, grabbed 5 rebounds and dished 5 assists. Cruz has averaged so far 8.7ppg, 3.8rpg and 1.5apg. He used to play for the Puerto Rican U19 national team last year.


The list of other players, who all have Puerto Rican passport but never been selected to any of Puerto Rican national teams:

   #1. Walter Hodge (183-PG-86, college: Florida, currently plays in Lebanon) was the major contributor in Homentmen's victory against the closely-ranked Champville (4-2) 76-68 in the Lebanese LBL on Sunday night. Hodge scored 18 points, grabbed 6 boards, passed 3 assists and added 3 steals. It was the game of the round between two top 4 ranked teams. Homentmen Beirut (4-1) is placed second in the LBL. It was his team's third consecutive victory in a row. They will play only one more game in the Regular Season. And that game will be critical. Hodge has individually a very good season with high stats. He averages: 17.0ppg, 4.6rpg, 5.4apg and 1.4spg. Hodge has a dual citizenship: U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rican.

   #2. Stephen Thompson Jr. (193-G-97, currently plays college basketball in the States) led Oregon St. to an easy victory against the Pepperdine University 82-67 in the NCAA on Monday night. Thompson Jr. scored 20 points, had 5 rebounds and dished 3 assists (went 5 for 5 at the free throw line) in 33 minutes. The Oregon State University has conference record this season. Thompson Jr. plays fourth season for the team. He has very impressive stats this year: 15.4ppg, 3.7rpg, 3.2apg and 1.8spg in 10 games he played so far. Thompson Jr. is another player who holds two passports: Puerto Rican and American. Apparently he has never played in Puerto Rico.

   #3. Kyle Vinales (185-G-92, college: Cent.Conn.St., currently plays in FIBA Europe Cup) could not help AEK Larnaca (0-2) in their last game on Wednesday. Despite Vinales' good performance AEK Larnaca (#4) was crushed 78-56 at home by the higher-ranked Groningen (#3) in the group K of FIBA Europe Cup. He was the second best scorer with 11 points. Vinales also added 3 steals. There are only four games left until the end of the FIBA Europe Cup Second Stage. So now every game is very crucial. This season Vinales has very high stats. He averages: 18.8ppg, 2.1rpg, 2.8apg and 1.6spg. Vinales has both American and Puerto Rican nationalities. He used to play for Bayamon in Puerto Rican league.

   #4. Jose Guitian (207-F-87, college: Lasell, currently plays in Mexico) led Correcaminos to a victory against the third-ranked Aaguacateros (12-9) 99-91 in the Mexican LNBP (second division) last Sunday. Guitian had a double-double by scoring 20 points and getting 10 rebounds in 33 minutes. Correcaminos UAT Victoria (10-11) is placed fourth in North group. Guitian averaged so far 11.8ppg and 6.1rpg in 21 games. He also holds two passports: Puerto Rican and American. Guitian used to play for Leones de Ponce in Puerto Rican league.

   #5. Jhivvan Jackson (183-PG, currently studies in the States) contributed to UTSA's victory against the Texas A&M - Corpus Christi 64-50 in the NCAA in Thursday night's game. Jackson scored 22 points and grabbed 8 rebounds in 36 minutes. The The Univ.of Texas - San Antonio has conference record this season. Jackson has very impressive stats this year: 19.7ppg, 3.0rpg and 1.7apg in nine games.

   #6. Melsahn Basabe (201-PF-92, college: Iowa, currently plays in Israel) contributed to a Hapoel Kfar Saba's surprising victory against the third-ranked Ironi Kiryat Ata 87-85 in the Israeli National League (second division) last Saturday. He scored 17 points, had 8 rebounds and made 3 blocks. This season Basabe has very high stats. He averages: 15.3ppg, 10.5rpg and 1.1apg. Basabe holds both American and Puerto Rican passports. Despite his Puerto Rican nationality, Basabe previously played for the USA U19 national team and is probably not eligible to play for the Puerto Rican team. He used to play for Humacao Caciques in Puerto Rican league.

   #7. Miguel Arnold (180-PG, currently plays in NCAA2) helped Augusta University win their game against the Young Harris College 81-70 in the NCAA2 on Monday night. Arnold recorded 22 points and grabbed 5 rebounds in 33 minutes. Arnold averaged so far 10.4ppg, 1.3rpg and 1.4apg in seven games.

   #8. Jojo Walker (185-G-97, is currently at the American university), who plays in the NCAA was not able to help the Portland in their last game on Monday. Despite his good performance his team was defeated 67-56 on the road by the Seattle University. Walker scored 13 points and grabbed 4 rebounds. Walker averaged so far 13.5ppg, 3.9rpg, 3.7apg and 1.2spg.

   #9. Emanuel Ubilla (188-PG-86, agency: Court Side, college: Fair Dickinson, currently plays in Hungary) was not able to secure a victory for Kaposvari in their game against PVSK-Veolia in the Hungarian A Division. He was the second best scorer with 9 points. Ubilla also added 6 rebounds and 5 assists in 36 minutes. It was his first game for Kaposvari this season. His team lost 67-82. Ubilla holds both American and Puerto Rican passports. He used to play for Atleticos de San German in Puerto Rican league.

   #10. Denilson Fonseca (190-G-98, currently plays in Luxembourg) helped Basket Esch win their game against one of league's weakest teams Residence crushing them 103-68 in the Luxembourg Total League in Friday night's game. Fonseca scored 9 points in only 11 minutes. Fonseca has averaged so far 1.6ppg and 1.1rpg in 12 games.

There were many interesting games last round. The round ended with favorites losing the games, games ending by tiny margin and even winless team recording their first victory. Here is the last round review presented by ESL. The most exciting game of round 4 in the BSN took place in Guayama. We bring you last week's top performances from Puerto Ricans who are playing abroad and who all have had prior experience of national team duties at youth or senior level. This week's number one is an international swingman David Huertas (195-87). He could not help Fuerza Regia (31-9) in their last game. Despite Huertas' very good performance the first-placed Fuerza Regia (31-9) was edged 85-84 on the road by the lower-ranked (#3) Lenadores in the North group.    [read more]
