We bring you last week's top performances from Puerto Ricans who are playing abroad and who all have had prior experience of national team duties at youth or senior level.


Gary Browne

   #1. This week's number one is an international guard Gary Browne (185-93, college: W.Virginia, currently plays in Israel). He led Ironi Nes-Ziona to a victory against the closely-ranked Beer Sheva (9-9) 90-78 in the Israeli Winner League in Sunday night's game. Browne scored 14 points, had 8 rebounds and dished 6 assists in 29 minutes on the court. Ironi Hai Motors Nes-Ziona (8-10) is placed seventh in the Winner League. There are only four games left until the end of the Regular Season. So now every game will be critical. It's Browne's first season with the team. He has relatively good stats this year: 14.8ppg, 6.1rpg, 4.8apg, 1.1spg, 2FGP: 45.0%, 3FGP: 39.7% and FT: 76.8% in 17 games he played so far. Browne has a dual citizenship: Puerto Rican and American. He is currently a member of the Puerto Rican senior national team. Browne used to play for Coamo in Puerto Rican league.

Maurice Harkless

   #2. Second place goes to former international swingman Maurice Harkless (203-93, college: St.John's, currently plays in NBA). He contributed to a Portland Trail Blazers' victory against the Brooklyn Nets (30-30) 113-99 in the NBA last Thursday. Harkless recorded 13 points, 8 rebounds and 4 assists. The Portland Trail Blazers have a solid 35-23 record this season. Harkless has been at the team for four years. This year he averages: 6.2ppg, 3.9rpg, 2FGP: 54.8%, 3FGP: 28.4% and FT: 67.6%. Harkless is another player who holds two passports: Puerto Rican and American. He played for the Puerto Rican national team in 2016. Strangely Harkless has never played in Puerto Rico.

   #3. The Puerto Rican player who performed third best last week abroad was an experienced former international forward Renaldo Balkman (203-84, college: S.Carolina, currently plays in ASEAN League). He led his Filipino team SM Beermen to a victory over the league outsider Zhuhai (2-17) crushing them 108-81 in the ASEAN League on Sunday night. Balkman was MVP of the game. He recorded 20 points, 6 rebounds, 9 assists and made 3 blocks in 32 minutes. San Miguel Beermen (16-3) is placed first in the ASEAN League. It was his team's third consecutive victory in a row. Balkman has individually a very good year with high stats. He averages: 25.1ppg, 10.8rpg, 4.2apg, 1.4bpg, 1.6spg, 2FGP: 60.1%(161-268), 3FGP: 35.6% and FT: 72.5% in 18 games. Balkman has both American and Puerto Rican nationalities. He played for the Puerto Rican national team three years ago. Balkman used to play for Guayama in Puerto Rican league.

Peter Ramos

   #4. Center Peter Ramos (222-85, currently plays in ASEAN League) is a teammate of previously mentioned Renaldo Balkman. But that was another game of his team in ASEAN League which we would like to mention. Ramos helped his Filipino team SM Beermen win their game against the league outsider Zhuhai (2-17) crushing them 105-79. He recorded a triple-double by scoring 15 points, grabbing 14 rebounds and passing 11 assists. San Miguel Beermen (16-3) is placed first in the ASEAN League. It was his team's third consecutive victory in a row. This season Ramos has very high stats. He averages: 19.1ppg, 12.7rpg and 4.8apg. Ramos also holds two passports: Puerto Rican and American. He used to play for the Puerto Rican national team back in 2016. Ramos played also for Criollos de Caguas in Puerto Rican league.

   #5. Former international point guard Shabazz Napier (185-91, college: Connecticut, currently plays in NBA) faced previously mentioned Maurice Harkless in the NBA last game. Napier. He could not help the Brooklyn Nets (30-30) to beat the Portland Trail Blazers (35-23). Napier recorded 7 points and added 10 assists in 21 minutes. The Brooklyn Nets (30-30) lost 99-113 on the road to the Trail Blazers. This year Napier has relatively solid stats: 9.8ppg, 1.8rpg and 2.8apg in 48 games. He holds both American and Puerto Rican passports. Napier used to play for the Puerto Rican national team three years ago. Apparently he has never played in Puerto Rico.

   #6. Point guard Wilfredo Pagan (184-76, currently plays in Mexico) managed to help Fuerza Regia Monterrey in a victory against the fifth-ranked Correcaminos (18-22) 96-78 in the Mexican LNBP (second division) in Sunday night's game. He scored 5 points and added 5 passes in 17 minutes. Fuerza Regia Monterrey (31-9) is placed first in North group. The Regular Season already ended. This year Pagan's overall stats are: 4.6ppg, 1.7rpg and 1.9apg in 40 games. He holds both American and Puerto Rican passports. Pagan is a former international player as he played for the Puerto Rican senior team seventeen years ago. He used to play for Brujos de Guayama in Puerto Rican league.

   #7. Former U19 international forward Nicholas Guadarrama (196-99, currently plays college basketball in the States), who plays in the NCAA was not able to help the New Hampshire (1-3) in their last game on Thursday. Despite Guadarrama's very good performance his team was badly defeated 70-50 in West Hartford by the University of Hartford. He recorded a double-double by scoring 21 points and getting 16 rebounds. Guadarrama also added and 3 steals. There are only three games left until the end of the NCAA Regular Season. So now every game is very crucial. Guadarrama's total stats this season are: 7.6ppg, 5.3rpg and 1.3apg. He used to play for the Puerto Rican U19 national team two years ago.

   #8. Forward Christopher Ortiz (203-93, agency: Inception Sports, college: Kent St., currently plays in Finland) was not able to secure a victory for Helsinki Seagulls (10-18) in their last game on Friday. Despite his good performance Helsinki Seagulls was edged 74-72 on the opponent's court by the second-ranked Kauhajoki. Ortiz scored 13 points and grabbed 8 rebounds. This season Ortiz has very high stats. He averages: 15.6ppg, 6.2rpg and 1.4apg. Ortiz holds both American and Puerto Rican passports. He used to play for the Puerto Rican national team back in 2017. Ortiz played also for Santurce in Puerto Rican league.

Former U19 international guard Jesus Cruz (196-98, currently studies in the States) couldn't help the Fairfield (2-5) in their game against the Canisius College (4-2) in the NCAA, despite his very good performance last Friday. He scored 18 points and added 3 passes in 39 minutes. Buthis team lost 68-72 at home to the Canisius College. There are only three games left until the end of the NCAA Regular Season. So now every game will be important. Cruz has reliable stats this year: 10.3ppg, 4.6rpg and 1.5apg in 27 games. He used to play for the Puerto Rican U19 national team two years ago.

   #10. Guard Eric Ayala (196-99, is currently at the American university) helped Maryland edge the University of Iowa 66-65 in the NCAA in Tuesday night's game. He scored 11 points, had 4 rebounds and dished 4 assists in 34 minutes. The University of Maryland has quite an impressive - conference record this season. This year Ayala's total stats are: 8.9ppg, 2.8rpg and 2.4apg in 27 games. He holds both American and Puerto Rican passports. Ayala is a former U16 international player as four years ago he still played for the Puerto Rican national team. Interesting that he has never played in Puerto Rico.

   #11. Former U18 international shooting guard Ethan Thompson (197-99, currently plays college basketball in the States) helped Oregon St. win their game against the University of Oregon 72-57 in the NCAA last Saturday. Thompson scored 10 points and added 4 assists. Thompson averaged so far 13.3ppg, 4.9rpg and 3.4apg. He holds both American and Puerto Rican passports. Thompson used to play for the Puerto Rican U18 national team three years ago. However he has never played in Puerto Rico.

   #12. International forward Carlos Lopez-Sosa (208-90, college: UNLV, currently plays in Mexico) couldn't help Angeles in their game against Soles in the Mexican LNBP (second division). He scored 5 points and grabbed 8 rebounds. His team was crushed by 33 points 104-71. This season Lopez-Sosa has very high stats. He averages: 16.5ppg, 8.3rpg and 2.6apg. Lopez-Sosa is also in the roster of the Puerto Rican national team.

   #13. Former U18 international point guard David Moya (183-98, currently plays in NCAA2) helped Barry University win their game against the Rollins College 76-61 in the NCAA2 on Saturday night. He scored 9 points, grabbed 9 rebounds and dished 5 assists. Moya has averaged so far 6.6ppg, 3.6rpg and 4.0apg. He used to play for the Puerto Rican U18 national team five years ago.

   #14. Former U18 international guard Ivan Gandia-Rosa (185-97, currently plays college basketball in the States) helped N.Florida edge the New Jersey Institute of Technology 64-63 in the NCAA last Saturday. He scored 8 points, had 5 rebounds and dished 6 assists. Gandia-Rosa averaged so far 10.4ppg, 3.2rpg and 5.8apg. He used to play for the Puerto Rican U18 national team back in 2014.

   #15. Former international power forward Alexander Galindo (200-85, college: FIU, currently plays in Argentina) helped Boca Juniors edge one of league's weakest teams Argentino 78-77 in the Argentinian La Liga on Sunday night. Galindo recorded only one point in 13 minutes. Galindo has averaged so far 5.5ppg and 2.3rpg in 11 games. He used to play for the Puerto Rican national team three years ago.


The list of other players, who all have Puerto Rican passport but never been selected to any of Puerto Rican national teams:

   #1. Stephen Thompson Jr. (193-G-97, currently plays college basketball in the States) led Oregon St. to an easy victory against the University of Oregon 72-57 in the NCAA on Saturday night. Thompson Jr. scored 22 points, had 4 rebounds and dished 3 assists. The Oregon State University has 3-2 conference record this season. Thompson Jr. is one of the most experienced players in a team as it's his fourth year in Oregon St.'s roster. He has individually a very good season with high stats. Thompson Jr. averages: 16.4ppg, 4.5rpg, 3.6apg and 1.5spg. He has a dual citizenship: Puerto Rican and American. Interesting that Thompson Jr. has never played in Puerto Rico.

   #2. Jhivvan Jackson (183-PG, currently studies in the States), who plays in the NCAA could not help the UTSA (4-2) in their last game. Despite Jackson's very good performance his team lost 67-72 at home to the Louisiana Tech University. He scored 22 points and added 3 assists in 35 minutes. The Regular Season already ended in the NCAA. Jackson has very impressive stats this year: 22.6ppg, 3.9rpg, 2.5apg and 1.3spg in 24 games he played so far.

   #3. Neftali Alvarez (188-G, is currently at the American university), who plays in the NCAA was not able to help the Fairfield (2-5) in their last game on Sunday. Despite Alvarez's very good performance his team was defeated 78-73 on their home court in Fairfield by the Niagara University. He recorded 16 points. There are only three games left until the end of the NCAA Regular Season. So now every game will be critical. Alvarez averaged so far 11.5ppg, 3.7rpg, 3.3apg and 1.4spg.

   #4. Ebube Ebube (201-F-97, currently plays college basketball in the States), who plays in the NCAA was not able to secure a victory for the Manhattan (2-4) in their last game. Despite Ebube's good performance his team lost 52-66 on the road to the Iona College. He had a double-double by scoring 12 points and getting 10 rebounds. Ebube also added and 3 steals in 28 minutes. There are only three games left until the end of the NCAA Regular Season. Ebube has averaged so far 5.5ppg and 4.8rpg in 26 games.

   #5. Jojo Walker (185-G-97, currently plays college basketball in the States), who plays in the NCAA couldn't help the Portland (0-5) in their last game. Despite his good performance his team lost 63-68 in San Francisco to the University of. Walker scored 11 points and added 5 assists in 35 minutes. So far Portland lost all five games in the conference There are only three games left until the end of the NCAA Regular Season. Walker's stats this year are: 11.9ppg, 3.2rpg and 3.5apg in 28 games.

   #6. Miguel Arnold (180-PG, currently plays in NCAA2) led Augusta University to an easy victory against the Georgia College & State University 91-76 in the NCAA2 in Saturday night's game. Arnold scored 14 points in 28 minutes. Arnold's stats this year are: 12.1ppg, 2.0rpg and 1.5apg in 20 games.

   #7. Daniel Vitiello (188-G, currently plays in NAIA) couldn't help the Montreat Anderson College in their game against the Union College, KY in the AAC. Vitiello scored 5 points in 13 minutes. His team was crushed by 29 points 91-62 in the AAC. Vitiello has averaged so far 5.5ppg and 2.3rpg in 11 games.

   #8. TreVon Hughes (185-PG-87, college: Wisconsin, currently plays in ASEAN League) was the major contributor in a 2-point Saigon Heat's victory against the closely-ranked Formosa Dreamers 74-72 in the ASEAN League in Saturday night's game. He recorded a double-double by scoring 17 points and getting 11 rebounds. Hughes also added 6 assists and 4 steals. This season Hughes has very high stats. He averages: 21.6ppg, 7.2rpg, 5.8apg and 2.8spg. Hughes is another player who holds two passports: Puerto Rican and American.

Veteran forward Will Daniels(202-F-86, college: URI) signed with Leones de Ponce and is expected to join the team on Sunday. Daniels played in BSN for Guaynabo, Quebradillas and Fajardo. In 2017 he won a championship with Quebradillas. He recently played in France with Levallois where he averaged 10.8 points in 14 games. Ponce is expected to finish the season with Adrian Uter and Daniels as their imports. JJ Hickson and Nick Minnerath left due to personal commitments.   [read more]

JORDAN GLYNN Indios de Mayaguez (BSN) strengthened their roster with addition of 29-year old American forward Jordan Glynn (200-102kg-89, college: SF Austin). He moved there from Fuerza Regia in Mexican LNBP where he started the season. In 52 games he recorded very impressive stats: 15.8ppg, 6.2rpg and 2.0apg this season.
