Here is the weekly review of the top performing Puerto Rican players, who play currently abroad.


Renaldo Balkman

   #1. This week's number one is an experienced former international forward Renaldo Balkman (203-84, college: S.Carolina, currently plays in ASEAN League). He could not help SM Beermen (16-4) in their last game. Despite Balkman's very good performance the league leader SM Beermen lost 103-116 on the road to the lower-ranked (#6) Macau. He had a double-double by scoring 33 points and getting 11 rebounds. Balkman also added 5 assists in 38 minutes on the court. It was SM Beermen's first loss after three consecutive victories. Balkman has individually a very good year with high stats. He averages: 25.8ppg, 10.6rpg, 4.2apg, 1.3bpg, 1.7spg, 2FGP: 60.5%(185-306), 3FGP: 37.5% and FT: 68.2% in 20 games he played so far. Balkman has a dual citizenship: Puerto Rican and American. He played for the Puerto Rican senior national team three years ago. Balkman used to play for Guayama in Puerto Rican league.

Peter Ramos

   #2. Second place goes to former international center Peter Ramos (222-85, currently plays in ASEAN League) is a teammate of previously mentioned Renaldo Balkman. But that was another game of his team in ASEAN League which we would like to mention. Ramos was the major contributor in a SM Beermen's victory against one of league's weakest teams Mono Vampire (6-14) 78-59. He recorded a double-double by scoring 16 points and getting 19 rebounds. Ramos also added 7 assists. San Miguel Beermen (16-4) is placed first in the ASEAN League. It was his team's third consecutive victory in a row. It's Ramos' first season with the team. This year he has very high stats. Ramos averages: 18.9ppg, 13.1rpg, 4.7apg, 2FGP: 63.8%(111-174), 3FGP: 31.3% and FT: 47.5%. He is another player who holds two passports: Puerto Rican and American. Ramos played for the Puerto Rican national team in 2016. He used to play for Criollos de Caguas in Puerto Rican league.

Maurice Harkless

   #3. The Puerto Rican player who performed third best last week abroad was former international swingman Maurice Harkless (203-93, college: St.John's, currently plays in NBA). Harkless led Portland Trail Blazers to a victory against the Boston Celtics (38-25) 97-92 in the NBA on Wednesday night. He had a double-double by scoring 17 points and getting 10 rebounds. Harkless also added and 3 steals in 37 minutes. The Portland Trail Blazers have not so impressive 38-159 record this season. It was his team's fifth consecutive victory in a row. Harkless has been at the team for four years. This season his overall stats are: 6.8ppg, 4.2rpg, 1.1spg, 2FGP: 57.6%(95-165), 3FGP: 28.0% and FT: 65.8% in 42 games. Harkless has both American and Puerto Rican nationalities. He played for the Puerto Rican national team three years ago. Strangely Harkless has never played in Puerto Rico.

Shabazz Napier

   #4. Point guard Shabazz Napier (185-91, college: Connecticut, currently plays in NBA) was not able to help the Brooklyn Nets (32-32) in their last game on Wednesday. Despite his very good performance the Brooklyn Nets (32-32) were defeated 125-116 in Washington by the Wizards. Napier was the second best scorer with 22 points (made all of his seven free throws). Napier has relatively good stats this season: 9.7ppg, 1.7rpg and 2.6apg. He also holds two passports: Puerto Rican and American. Napier used to play for the Puerto Rican national team back in 2016. Apparently he has never played in Puerto Rico.

   #5. Former international power forward Alexander Galindo (200-85, college: FIU, currently plays in Argentina) was not able to secure a victory for Boca Juniors (10-8) in their game against Obras Basket (12-7) in the Argentinian La Liga. Galindo scored 9 points in 16 minutes. But Boca Juniors lost 64-73 in a derby game to the higher-ranked (#4) Obras Basket. This year Galindo's total stats are: 5.8ppg and 2.3rpg in 12 games. He used to play for the Puerto Rican national team three years ago.

Ethan Thompson

   #6. Shooting guard Ethan Thompson (197-99, currently plays college basketball in the States), who plays in the NCAA couldn't help the Oregon St. (3-2) in their last game on Thursday. Despite Thompson's very good performance his team was edged 74-72 in Tucson by the University of Arizona. He scored 18 points and added 5 assists (went 8 for 8 at the free throw line). There are only three games left until the end of the NCAA Regular Season. So now every game will be critical. This season Thompson has relatively solid stats: 13.4ppg, 4.8rpg and 3.4apg. He holds both American and Puerto Rican passports. Thompson is a former U18 international player as he played for the Puerto Rican team three years ago. Interesting that he has never played in Puerto Rico.

   #7. International guard Gary Browne (185-93, college: W.Virginia, currently plays in Israel) couldn't help Ironi Nes-Ziona (8-11) in their game against Hapoel Tel-Aviv (8-11) in the Israeli Winner League. Browne recorded 8 points. Ironi Nes-Ziona was defeated 89-85 in Tel-Aviv by the higher-ranked Hapoel (#7). It was Ironi Nes-Ziona's third consecutive loss in a row. There are only three games left until the end of the Regular Season. So now every game is very crucial. Browne has reliable stats this season: 14.4ppg, 5.7rpg, 4.6apg and 1.2spg. He holds both American and Puerto Rican passports. Browne is also Puerto Rican national team player. He used to play for Coamo in Puerto Rican league.

   #8. Guard Jorge Pacheco-Ortiz (185-98, currently studies in the States), who plays in the NCAA couldn't help the Liberty (5-0) in their last game. Despite his good performance his team lost 70-75 at home to the University of North Florida. Pacheco-Ortiz recorded 14 points and added 4 passes in 29 minutes. The Regular Season already ended in the NCAA. Pacheco-Ortiz has averaged so far 6.7ppg, 1.6rpg and 2.3apg in 31 games. He used to play for the Puerto Rican U19 national team back in 2017.

   #9. Former U18 international guard Ivan Gandia-Rosa (185-97, is currently at the American university) faced previously mentioned Jorge Pacheco-Ortiz in the NCAA last game. Gandia-Rosa contributed to N.Florida's victory against the Liberty University (2-3) 75-70. He recorded 12 points, 5 rebounds and 7 assists. The Regular Season already ended in the NCAA. Gandia-Rosa's stats this season are: 10.5ppg, 3.2rpg and 5.8apg. He used to play for the Puerto Rican U18 national team five years ago.

Forward Nicholas Guadarrama (196-99, currently plays college basketball in the States) contributed to an New Hampshire's victory against the University at Albany (3-2) 62-58 in the NCAA in Wednesday night's game. Guadarrama scored 10 points, grabbed 7 rebounds and dished 3 assists in 36 minutes. The University of New Hampshire has 1-3 conference record this season. There are only two games left until the end of the NCAA Regular Season. Guadarrama has averaged so far 7.7ppg, 5.3rpg and 1.4apg in 24 games. He is a former U19 international player as two years ago he still played for the Puerto Rican national team.

   #11. U18 international guard Jose Placer (188-0, currently plays college basketball in the States) couldn't help the UMBC in their game against the University at Albany in the NCAA. Despite his very good performance last Saturday Placer recorded 14 points and added 3 passes. Placer has averaged so far 5.6ppg, 1.3rpg and 1.7apg. He plays currently for the Puerto Rican U18 national team.

   #12. Former U19 international guard Jesus Cruz (196-98, currently plays college basketball in the States) contributed to Fairfield's victory against the Manhattan College 72-59 in the NCAA last Sunday. He scored 9 points in 24 minutes. Cruz has averaged so far 10.0ppg, 4.4rpg and 1.4apg in 29 games. He used to play for the Puerto Rican U19 national team back in 2017.

   #13. Former U16 international guard Eric Ayala (196-99, currently plays college basketball in the States) couldn't help the the league outsider Maryland in their game against the The Pennsylvania State University in the NCAA. Ayala scored 6 points. His team was badly defeated by 17 points 78-61. Ayala has averaged so far 8.5ppg, 2.8rpg and 2.3apg. He holds both American and Puerto Rican passports. Ayala used to play for the Puerto Rican U16 national team four years ago. However he has never played in Puerto Rico.

   #14. Former U18 international power forward Christian Negron (200-98, currently plays college basketball in the States) couldn't help the the league outsider Loyola, IL in their game against the Southern Illinois University in the NCAA. He scored only 4 points and grabbed 4 rebounds. His team was defeated 63-53. Negron has averaged so far 2.1ppg and 2.0rpg. He used to play for the Puerto Rican U18 national team back in 2016.

   #15. Former U16 international point guard Jose Morales (175, currently plays college basketball in the States) managed to help Princeton University in a 1-point victory against the Dartmouth College 77-76 in the NCAA on Friday night. Morales recorded only 2 points in 9 minutes on the court. Morales has averaged so far 4.3ppg, 1.5rpg, 1.9apg and 1.5spg in 22 games. He used to play for the Puerto Rican U16 national team five years ago.


The list of other players, who all have Puerto Rican passport but never been selected to any of Puerto Rican national teams:

   #1. Stephen Thompson Jr. (193-G-97, currently plays college basketball in the States), who plays in the NCAA could not help the Oregon St. (3-2) in their last game. Despite Thompson Jr.'s very good performance his team was edged 74-72 on the road by the University of Arizona. He scored 17 points and had 3 steals in 38 minutes. There are only three games left until the end of the NCAA Regular Season. So now every game will be critical. Thompson Jr. is one of the most experienced players in a team as it's his fourth year in Oregon St.'s roster. Thompson Jr. has individually a very good season with high stats. He averages: 16.4ppg, 4.4rpg, 3.5apg and 1.6spg in 27 games he played so far. Thompson Jr. has a dual citizenship: Puerto Rican and American. However he has never played in Puerto Rico.

   #2. Miguel Arnold (180-PG, currently plays in NCAA2) led Augusta University to an easy victory against the Univ.of S.Carolina - Aiken 94-75 in the NCAA2 on Wednesday night. Arnold scored 27 points (!!!) and grabbed 4 rebounds in 29 minutes. The Augusta University has a solid 4-2 record this season. There are only two games left until the end of the NCAA2 Regular Season. So now every game is very crucial. Arnold's stats this year are: 12.9ppg, 2.0rpg and 1.5apg in 22 games.

   #3. Ebube Ebube (201-F-97, currently studies in the States), who plays in the NCAA was not able to help the Manhattan (2-4) in their last game on Sunday. Despite his very good performance his team was defeated 72-59 at home by the Fairfield University. Ebube scored 20 points and grabbed 5 rebounds. His team will play only one more game in the NCAA Regular Season. Ebube has averaged so far 6.0ppg and 4.8rpg.

   #4. Jojo Walker (185-G-97, is currently at the American university), who plays in the NCAA was not able to secure a victory for the Portland (0-5) in their last game. Despite Walker's good performance his team lost 80-86 on their home court in Portland to the Pepperdine University. He recorded 10 points and added 3 passes in 31 minutes. So far Portland lost all five games in the conference Walker's team will play only one more game in the NCAA Regular Season. Walker's stats this year are: 11.7ppg, 3.1rpg and 3.4apg in 30 games.

   #5. K.J. Santos (203-G-97, currently plays college basketball in the States) couldn't help the Missouri (1-3) in their game against the Mississippi State University in the NCAA. He recorded 5 points and grabbed 6 rebounds. his team was badly defeated 68-49 on their home court in Columbia by the Mississippi State University. There are only three games left until the end of the NCAA Regular Season. Santos has averaged so far 1.4ppg and 1.9rpg. He is another player who holds two passports: Puerto Rican and American. However Santos has never played in Puerto Rico.

   #6. Neftali Alvarez (188-G, currently plays college basketball in the States) faced previously mentioned Ebube Ebube in the NCAA last game. Alvarez contributed to Fairfield's victory against the Manhattan College 72-59. He scored 7 points and added 4 assists in 39 minutes. Alvarez's stats this year are: 11.1ppg, 3.7rpg, 3.3apg and 1.4spg in 28 games.

   #7. Daniel Vitiello (188-G, currently plays in NAIA) couldn't help the the league outsider Montreat Anderson College in their game against the Union College, KY in the AAC. Vitiello scored 7 points. His team was defeated 95-85 in the AAC. Vitiello has averaged so far 4.3ppg, 1.5rpg, 1.9apg and 1.5spg.

   #8. Yansius Gonzalez (193-F, currently plays in NAIA) managed to help Park University in a victory against the Williams Baptist College crushing them 72-51 in the NAIA last Saturday. He scored only 4 points in 4 minutes on the court. Gonzalez has averaged so far 1.0ppg and 1.2rpg in nine games.

   #9. TreVon Hughes (185-PG-87, college: Wisconsin, currently plays in ASEAN League) couldn't help Saigon Heat (11-9) in their last game on Sunday. Despite his very good performance Saigon Heat was edged 81-79 in Surabaya by the lower-ranked CLS Knights (#7). Hughes was the second best scorer with 18 points. He also added 5 rebounds and made 2 blocks. This season Hughes has very high stats. He averages: 21.3ppg, 7.1rpg, 5.5apg and 2.7spg. Hughes has both American and Puerto Rican nationalities.

  




Will Daniels
Will Daniels to join Ponce - 7 hours ago
Veteran forward Will Daniels(202-F-86, college: URI) signed with Leones de Ponce and is expected to join the team on Sunday. Daniels played in BSN for Guaynabo, Quebradillas and Fajardo. In 2017 he won a championship with Quebradillas. He recently played in France with Levallois where he averaged 10.8 points in 14 games. Ponce is expected to finish the season with Adrian Uter and Daniels as their imports. JJ Hickson and Nick Minnerath left due to personal commitments.   [read more]

JORDAN GLYNN Indios de Mayaguez (BSN) strengthened their roster with addition of 29-year old American forward Jordan Glynn (200-102kg-89, college: SF Austin). He moved there from Fuerza Regia in Mexican LNBP where he started the season. In 52 games he recorded very impressive stats: 15.8ppg, 6.2rpg and 2.0apg this season.
