Here is the weekly review of the top performing Puerto Rican players, who play currently abroad.


Peter Ramos
Peter Ramos
   #1. This week's number one is an experienced former international center Peter Ramos (222-85, currently plays in ASEAN League). He led his Filipino team SM Beermen to a victory over the closely-ranked Macau (13-10) 101-96 in the ASEAN League in Friday night's game. Ramos was MVP of the game. He had a double-double by scoring 29 points and getting 13 rebounds in 37 minutes on the court. It was the game of the round between two top 4 ranked teams. San Miguel Beermen (18-6) is placed first in the ASEAN League. There are only two games left until the end of the ASEAN League Regular Season. So now every game will be critical. Ramos has individually a very good year with high stats. He averages: 19.5ppg, 13.0rpg, 4.3apg, 2FGP: 62.2%(143-230), 3FGP: 31.0% in 22 games he played so far. Ramos has a dual citizenship: Puerto Rican and American. He played for the Puerto Rican senior national team three years ago. Ramos used to play for Criollos de Caguas in Puerto Rican league.

Ramon Clemente

   #2. Second place goes to an international power forward Ramon Clemente (200-85, college: Wichita St., currently plays in Argentina). He contributed to a San Lorenzo's victory against the closely-ranked Gimnasia (14-7) 87-82 in the Argentinian La Liga on Monday night. Clemente recorded 12 points and grabbed 4 rebounds in 20 minutes. It was the game of the round between two top 4 ranked teams. San Lorenzo de Almagra (17-1) is placed first in the La Liga. It was his team's sixth consecutive victory in a row. This year Clemente's overall stats are: 4.3ppg, 3.0rpg, 2FGP: 38.1%, 3FGP: 29.4% and FT: 57.1% in 10 games. He is another player who holds two passports: Puerto Rican and American. Clemente is in the roster of the Puerto Rican senior national team. He used to play for Indios de Mayaguez in Puerto Rican league.

Christopher Ortiz

   #3. The Puerto Rican player who performed third best last week abroad was former international forward Christopher Ortiz (203-93, agency: Inception Sports, college: Kent St., currently plays in Finland). Ortiz was the major contributor in a Helsinki Seagulls' victory against the closely-ranked Kouvot (15-17) 102-94 in the Finnish Korisliiga last Friday. He had a double-double by scoring 26 points and getting 10 rebounds. Ortiz also added and 3 steals in 35 minutes; quite an impressive performance considering it's only his third season in pro basketball. Helsinki Seagulls (14-18) is placed seventh in the Korisliiga. It was his team's fourth consecutive victory in a row. It's Ortiz's first year with the team. Ortiz has very impressive stats this season: 15.8ppg, 6.1rpg, 1.5apg, 2FGP: 48.1%, 3FGP: 34.4% and FT: 86.5% in 30 games. He has both American and Puerto Rican nationalities. Ortiz played for the Puerto Rican national team two years ago. He used to play for Santurce in Puerto Rican league.

Maurice Harkless

   #4. Swingman Maurice Harkless (203-93, college: St.John's, currently plays in NBA) helped Portland Trail Blazers win their game against the Phoenix Suns (16-54) 127-120 in the NBA on Saturday night. Harkless scored 9 points and grabbed 7 rebounds. The Portland Trail Blazers have a solid 42-26 record this season. It was his team's third consecutive victory in a row. Harkless has been at the team for four years. His total stats this season are: 7.0ppg, 4.3rpg, 1.1apg and 1.1spg. Harkless also holds two passports: Puerto Rican and American. He used to play for the Puerto Rican national team back in 2016. Strangely Harkless has never played in Puerto Rico.

   #5. Former U18 international shooting guard Ethan Thompson (197-99, currently plays college basketball in the States) helped Oregon St. win their game against the Washington State University (4-14) 85-77 in the NCAA last Saturday. He recorded a double-double by scoring 17 points and making 11 passes. Thompson also added 5 rebounds. The Oregon State University has 9-7 conference record this season. The Regular Season already ended in the NCAA. Thompson has relatively good stats this year: 13.7ppg, 5.0rpg and 3.9apg. He holds both American and Puerto Rican passports. Thompson used to play for the Puerto Rican U18 national team three years ago. Apparently he has never played in Puerto Rico.

   #6. Guard Eric Ayala (196-99, currently studies in the States), who plays in the NCAA could not help the Maryland (13-7) in their last game on Thursday. Despite his good performance the Maryland was defeated 69-61 on the road by the University of Nebraska. Ayala scored 12 points and grabbed 4 rebounds (was perfect 7-for-7 from the free throw line). The Regular Season already ended in the NCAA. Ayala's total stats this season are: 8.5ppg, 2.8rpg and 2.2apg. He holds both American and Puerto Rican passports. Ayala is a former U16 international player as he played for the Puerto Rican team four years ago. Interesting that he has never played in Puerto Rico.

   #7. Former U19 international guard Jorge Pacheco-Ortiz (185-98, is currently at the American university) helped Liberty win their game against the David Lipscomb University (14-2) 74-68 in the NCAA last Sunday. Pacheco-Ortiz recorded 16 points in 31 minutes. The Liberty University has a very solid 14-2 conference record this season. The Regular Season already ended in the NCAA. This year Pacheco-Ortiz's total stats are: 7.2ppg, 1.6rpg and 2.3apg in 34 games. He used to play for the Puerto Rican U19 national team two years ago.

   #8. Power forward Alexander Galindo (200-85, college: FIU, currently plays in Argentina) was not able to help Boca Juniors in their game against Olimpico de La Banda (10-10) in the Argentinian La Liga. Galindo cannot count Thursday's game as one of the best ones. He scored only 3 points. Boca Juniors was defeated 76-71 in La Banda by the lower-ranked Olimpico de (#12). They ended the series of three consecutive victories. It's Galindo's first season with the team. Galindo has averaged so far 4.9ppg and 2.0rpg. He used to play for the Puerto Rican national team back in 2016.

   #9. Former U16 international point guard Jose Morales (175, currently plays college basketball in the States) was not able to secure a victory for the Princeton (8-6) in their game against the Brown University (7-7) in the NCAA, despite his good performance in Friday night's game. Morales scored 10 points in 16 minutes. But the Princeton lost 63-67 in Providence to the Brown University. The Regular Season already ended in the NCAA. Morales has averaged so far 4.6ppg, 1.5rpg, 1.8apg and 1.5spg in 24 games. He used to play for the Puerto Rican U16 national team five years ago.

David Moya

   #10. Point guard David Moya (183-98, currently plays in NCAA2) couldn't help the Barry University (12-8) in their game against the Nova Southeastern University (18-2) in the NCAA2. Moya recorded 7 points, 8 rebounds and 5 assists. The Barry University was defeated 88-77 in Fort Lauderdale by the Nova Southeastern University. The Regular Season already ended in the NCAA2. Moya has averaged so far 6.8ppg, 3.5rpg and 3.8apg. He is a former U18 international player as five years ago he still played for the Puerto Rican national team.

   #11. U18 international guard Jose Placer (188-0, currently plays college basketball in the States) helped UMBC win their game against the University at Albany 62-54 in the NCAA on Saturday night. Placer scored 10 points in 17 minutes. Placer has averaged so far 5.6ppg, 1.3rpg and 1.5apg in 32 games. He plays currently for the Puerto Rican U18 national team.

   #12. U18 international center George Conditt IV (210-0, currently plays college basketball in the States) couldn't help the one of league's weakest teams Iowa St. in their game against the Texas Tech University in the NCAA. He cannot count Saturday's game as one of the best ones. Conditt IV scored only 2 points in 14 minutes. His team lost 73-80. Conditt IV has averaged so far 2.0ppg and 1.7rpg in 24 games. He is also in the roster of the Puerto Rican U18 national team.

   #13. Former U17 international forward Emanuel Hernandez (196-0, currently plays in NCAA2) couldn't help the one of league's weakest teams Belmont Abbey College in their game against the Emmanuel College, GA in the NCAA2. He cannot count Sunday's game as one of the best ones. Hernandez scored only 3 points. His team was edged 75-72 in the NCAA2. Hernandez has averaged so far 2.4ppg and 1.3rpg. He used to play for the Puerto Rican U17 national team two years ago.

   #14. International shooting guard Javier Mojica (190-84, college: Cent.Conn.St., currently plays in Mexico) was the main contributor in Lenadores' victory against the second-ranked Mineros 86-83 in the Mexican LNBP (second division) in Saturday night's game. He was the best player in that game. Mojica scored 17 points. This season Mojica has very high stats. He averages: 17.9ppg, 5.3rpg, 3.3apg and 1.7spg. Mojica holds both American and Puerto Rican passports. He plays currently for the Puerto Rican national team. Mojica used to play for Fajardo in Puerto Rican league.


The list of other players, who all have Puerto Rican passport but never been selected to any of Puerto Rican national teams:

   #1. Experienced Walter Hodge (183-PG-86, college: Florida, currently plays in Lebanon) could not help one of league's weakest teams Homentmen (11-3) in their last game on Friday. Despite his very good performance Homentmen was badly defeated 96-80 on the road by the leading Champville. Hodge was the top scorer with 34 points. He also added 3 assists. Hodge's team will play only one more game in the Regular Season. And that game will be critical. Hodge has individually a very good season with high stats. He averages: 20.4ppg, 4.1rpg, 6.5apg and 1.4spg. Hodge has a dual citizenship: U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rican.

   #2. Jhivvan Jackson (183-PG, currently plays college basketball in the States), who plays in the NCAA was not able to help the UTSA (11-7) in their last game on Thursday. Despite Jackson's very good performance the UTSA was defeated 85-76 in Birmingham by the University of Alabama at. He scored 35 points (!!!), grabbed 6 rebounds and dished 5 assists. The Regular Season already ended in the NCAA. This season Jackson has very high stats. He averages: 22.8ppg, 4.1rpg, 2.4apg and 1.2spg.

   #3. Stephen Thompson Jr. (193-G-97, currently studies in the States) led Oregon St. to a victory against the Washington State University (4-14) 85-77 in the NCAA in Saturday night's game. He scored 26 points (!!!) in 39 minutes. The Oregon State University has 9-7 conference record this season. The Regular Season already ended in the NCAA. Thompson Jr. is one of the most experienced players in a team as it's his fourth year in Oregon St.'s roster. Thompson Jr. has very impressive stats this season: 16.1ppg, 4.2rpg, 3.2apg and 1.5spg in 31 games he played so far. He is another player who holds two passports: Puerto Rican and American. Apparently Thompson Jr. has never played in Puerto Rico.

   #4. Emanuel Ubilla (188-PG-86, agency: Court Side, college: Fair Dickinson, currently plays in Hungary) contributed to an easy victory against the closely-ranked DEAC (11-11) crushing them 103-79 in the Hungarian A Division on Saturday night. Ubilla had a double-double by scoring 11 points and making 10 passes. He also added 8 rebounds in 34 minutes. Kaposvari KK (9-12) is placed tenth in the A Division. It was his team's fourth consecutive victory in a row. This year Ubilla has relatively solid stats: 13.6ppg, 5.5rpg, 5.3apg and 1.3spg in 12 games. He has both American and Puerto Rican nationalities. Ubilla used to play for Atleticos de San German in Puerto Rican league.

   #5. Miguel Arnold (180-PG, currently plays in NCAA2) contributed to an Augusta University's victory against the Univ.of S.Carolina - Aiken (18-4) 93-86 in the NCAA2 in Sunday night's game. Arnold scored 6 points and added 4 passes. The Augusta University has a very good 19-3 record this season. His team will play only one more game in the NCAA2 Regular Season. And now that game is very crucial. This season Arnold has relatively solid stats: 12.1ppg, 1.8rpg and 1.7apg.

   #6. Denilson Fonseca (190-G-98, currently plays in Luxembourg) was not able to secure a victory for Basket Esch in their game against Etzella in the Luxembourg Total League. Fonseca scored 6 points. His team was badly defeated by 16 points 73-57. Fonseca has averaged so far 2.4ppg and 1.1rpg.

   #7. Jose Martinez (208-F, is currently at the American university) managed to help University of San Diego in a victory against the Brigham Young University crushing them 80-57 in the NCAA in Saturday night's game. He scored only 2 points in 3 minutes on the court. Martinez has averaged so far 2.3ppg and 1.1rpg in 21 games.

   #8. TreVon Hughes (185-PG-87, college: Wisconsin, currently plays in ASEAN League) couldn't help one of league's weakest teams one of league's weakest teams Saigon Heat (12-12) in their last game. Despite Hughes' very good performance Saigon Heat was edged 91-90 in Surabaya by the higher-ranked (#6) CLS Knights. He scored 20 points, made 3 passes and 3 steals in 33 minutes. Hughes has very impressive stats this year: 20.3ppg, 6.6rpg, 5.6apg and 2.7spg in 19 games. He also holds two passports: Puerto Rican and American. However Hughes has never played in Puerto Rico.

   #9. Joseph Soto (190-G-93, currently plays in Mexico) contributed to a 3-point Lenadores' victory against the second-ranked Mineros 86-83 in the Mexican LNBP (second division) last Saturday. He scored 10 points and added 6 assists in 30 minutes. This year Soto has relatively solid stats: 11.1ppg, 2.5rpg, 7.1apg and 1.1spg in 38 games. He holds both Puerto Rican and Mexican passports.

Quebradillas - Arecibo 92-84 Quebradillas outscored Arecibo to advance into BSN semifinals. Capitanes trailed by 11 points at halftime and as many as 16 after three quarters before a 26-18 last quarter charge cut the deficit to 84-92 at the end of the game. GABRIEL BELARDO Toros de Aragua (LPB) strengthened their roster with addition of 29-year old American guard Gabriel Belardo (188-82kg-89, college: FIU). He played in the summer at Piratas de Quebradillas in Puerto Rican BSN league. Belardo managed to play in three leagues in three countries last year (!!!). In 11 BSN games he recorded just 2.1ppg and 1.1rpg. He also played for Cariduros (also in BSN) where in 7 games he averaged 10.6ppg, 3.3rpg, 3.6apg and 1.4spg. Arecibo - Quebradillas 94-77 Arecibo defeated Quebradillas to even the series at 3-3. The game was mostly controlled by Capitanes. Piratas managed to win second period 24-18. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Capitanes looked well-organized offensively handing out 24 assists.
