There was no lack of interesting games this round. The round ended with defeat of the leader and favorites losing the games. Here is the last round review presented by ESL.

The most surprising game was a loss of top-ranked Piratas (14-8) in San German on Sunday night. Visitors were edged by eighth ranked Atleticos (9-12) 87-85. It ended at the same time the two-game winning streak of Piratas. The hosts trailed by 6 points at the halftime before their 28-18 charge in the third quarter, which allowed them to win the game. Atleticos looked well-organized offensively handing out 22 assists. The former international guard Isaac Sosa-Carrion (190-90, college: Canisius) stepped up and scored 27 points for the winners and American forward Eugene Phelps (198-90, college: LBSU) chipped in 16 points, 7 rebounds and 7 assists. The best for the losing side was American guard Melo Trimble (190-95, college: Maryland) with 18 points and 8 assists. Both coaches used bench players in such tough game. Atleticos have a solid series of three victories in a row. They maintain eighth place with 9-12 record. Piratas at the other side still keep top position with eight games lost. Atleticos are looking forward to face league's second-placed Santeros in Coamo in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Piratas will play at home against Capitanes and are hoping to win this game.
Important game to mention about took place in Coamo. Second ranked Santeros (13-8) saved a 1-point victory at home edging leader Piratas (14-8) 99-98 on Tuesday evening. It ended at the same time the two-game winning streak of Piratas. It may be a crucial game in the contest for the top position in the league. American power forward Joseph Jones (206-86, college: Texas A&M) nailed a double-double by scoring 23 points and 10 rebounds for the winning side and Jonathan Rodriguez accounted for 20 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists. American guard Melo Trimble (190-95, college: Maryland) came up with 25 points and 7 assists for Piratas in the defeat. Both coaches tested many bench players in such tough game. Santeros maintains second place with 13-8 record behind leader Quebradillas. Piratas at the other side still keep top position with eight games lost. Santeros will play against Atleticos (#8) in San German in the next round which should be theoretically an easy game. Piratas will play at home against Capitanes (#6) and hope to get back on the winning track.
Ninth-ranked Indios (6-13) gave a tough game to first ranked Piratas (14-8) in Mayaguez on Saturday. The visitors from Quebradillas managed to secure only one-point victory 88-87. However their fans expected much easier game. Americans were the main players on the court. The best player for the winners was Melo Trimble who scored 24 points. At the other side the best for losing team was Justin Harper who recorded 21 points and 7 rebounds. Both coaches allowed to play bench players in such tough game. Piratas maintains first place with 14-8 record. Indios lost third consecutive game. They stay at the bottom position with 13 games lost. Piratas will meet at home Capitanes (#6) in the next round which should be theoretically an easy game. Indios will play against Leones and hope to secure a win.
A very interesting game took place in Fajardo. It ended with only one-point defeat on the road of 5th ranked Leones (10-9) to fourth ranked Cariduros (11-12) 107-106 in the fight for the fourth place. It was a good game for Juan Miguel Suero who saved his team from a defeat with 24 points, 7 rebounds and 6 assists (went 7 for 7 at the free throw line). Cariduros' coach Felix Rivera allowed to play the deep bench players in such tough game. Cariduros maintains fourth place with 11-12 record. Leones lost third consecutive game. They keep the fifth position with nine games lost. Cariduros' next round opponent will be higher ranked Brujos (#3) in Guayama and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Leones will play on the road against Indios in Mayaguez and hope to win that game.
Very important is a home loss of third ranked Brujos (11-10) against fifth ranked Leones (10-9) on Sunday night. Host Brujos were defeated by Leones in a tough game in Guayama 96-100. Victor Liz stepped up and scored 22 points and 9 rebounds for the winners. Leones maintains fifth place with 10-9 record. Loser Brujos keep the third position with ten games lost. Leones will face bottom-ranked Indios (#9) in Mayaguez in the next round. Brujos will play at home against Cariduros (#4) and it may be a tough game between close rivals.

There were no shocking results in the rest of the games of round 9: Fajardo were destroyed by Bayamon on the opponent's court 120-86. Arecibo outscored Mayaguez in a home game 110-84. Ponce recorded a loss to Bayamon on the road 105-101. San German defeated Fajardo on its own court 101-97. Guayama beat Fajardo in a road game 91-83. Guayama lost to Quebradillas at home 80-87. Ponce was outscored by Arecibo on the opponent's court 80-105. Bayamon managed to beat Fajardo in a home game 111-103.
The most impressive stats of the last round was 13 points and 9 rebounds by Carlos Lopez-Sosa of Arecibo.



Bayamon - Fajardo 120-86

There was an upset in Bayamon where 4th placed Cariduros (11-12) were crushed by eighth ranked Vaqueros (9-9) 120-86 on Sunday. The game was mostly controlled by Vaqueros. Cariduros was better in fourth quarter 34-29. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Vaqueros forced 23 Cariduros turnovers. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 27 assists. Forward Benito Santiago (198-89, college: Cumberlands) stepped up and scored 35 points (!!!) for the winners and American center Greg Smith (208-91, college: Fresno St.) chipped in 15 points, 12 rebounds and 5 assists (on 6-of-7 shooting from the field). The best for the losing side was Dominican point guard Juan Miguel Suero (198-93) with 17 points and 5 rebounds and swingman Xavier Zambrana (193-91) scored 16 points and 6 rebounds. Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. Vaqueros have a solid series of four victories in a row. They moved-up to seventh place. Cariduros lost third consecutive game. They keep the fourth position with 12 games lost. Vaqueros will face higher ranked Capitanes (#6) in Arecibo in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Cariduros will play on the road against Brujos in Guayama and it may be a tough game between close rivals.

Very important is a home loss of third ranked Brujos (11-10) against fifth ranked Leones (10-9) on Sunday night. Host Brujos were defeated by Leones in a tough game in Guayama 96-100. Brujos trailed by 11 points at halftime and as many as 16 after three quarters before a 31-19 last quarter charge cut the deficit to 96-100 at the end of the game. Leones looked well-organized offensively handing out 30 assists. Dominican Victor Liz (193-86) stepped up and scored 22 points and 9 rebounds for the winners and American Nick Minnerath (207-88, college: Detroit Mercy) chipped in 26 points. The best for the losing side was forward Jose-Glen Rodriguez (201-92) with 23 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists and American-Guamanian forward Tai Wesley (201-86, college: Utah St.) produced a double-double by scoring 17 points, 10 rebounds and 6 assists. Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. Leones maintains fifth place with 10-9 record. Loser Brujos keep the third position with ten games lost. Fajardo - Ponce 107-106

A very interesting game took place in Fajardo. It ended with only one-point defeat on the road of 5th ranked Leones (10-9) to fourth ranked Cariduros (11-12) 107-106 in the fight for the fourth place. It looked good early as Leones took a 2-point small lead at the end of first quarter. But then Cariduros had a 28-18 second period charge getting the lead and Leones were not able to take back game control losing it eventually 106-107. Cariduros players were unselfish on offense dishing 25 assists. It was a good game for Dominican point guard Juan Miguel Suero (198-93) who saved his team from a defeat with 24 points, 7 rebounds and 6 assists (went 7 for 7 at the free throw line). Swingman Xavier Zambrana (193-91) contributed with 14 points and 9 rebounds for the winners. Five Cariduros players scored in double figures. Cariduros' coach Felix Rivera allowed to play the deep bench players in such tough game. American Nick Minnerath (207-88, college: Detroit Mercy) answered with a double-double by scoring 44 points (!!!) and 14 rebounds (went 10 for 10 at the free throw line !!!) and Dominican Victor Liz (193-86) added 21 points, 9 rebounds and 8 assists in the effort for Leones. Rather predictable result in Arecibo where sixth ranked Capitanes (10-12) smashed bottom-ranked Indios (6-13) 110-84 on Wednesday. The game without a history. Capitanes led from the first minutes and controlled entire game increasing their lead in each quarter. They made 18-of-23 free shots (78.3 percent) during the game. Capitanes looked well-organized offensively handing out 27 assists. Great defensive blocking was one of the keys in this match when Capitanes made 8 blocks. American forward Victor Rudd (205-91, college: S.Florida) stepped up and scored 23 points and 7 rebounds for the winners and Nigerian center Jeleel Akindele (216-83, college: Chicago St., agency: BeoBasket) chipped in 8 points, 14 rebounds, 5 assists and 4 blocks. Fajardo - Guayama 83-91

The game between closely ranked teams ended with 4th placed Cariduros' (11-12) home loss to third ranked Brujos (11-10) 83-91 on Wednesday. The guests trailed by 4 points at the halftime before their 51-39 charge in the second half, which allowed them to win the game. Brujos outrebounded Cariduros 46-28 including a 33-17 advantage in defensive rebounds. It was a great shooting night for Brujos especially from behind the arc, where they had solid 52.4 percentage. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 23 assists. No shocking result in a game in Guayama where first ranked Piratas (14-8) won against 3rd placed Brujos (11-10) 87-80 on Thursday. The guests started the game with a very strong first quarter 21-12. But Brujos won second period 21-20. However it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Piratas made 25-of-28 free shots (89.3 percent) during the game. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 21 assists. American guard Melo Trimble (190-95, college: Maryland) stepped up and scored 19 points, 6 rebounds and 8 assists for the winners and the former international Michael Rosario (190-90, college: Florida) chipped in 23 points and 5 assists. Ninth-ranked Indios (6-13) gave a tough game to first ranked Piratas (14-8) in Mayaguez on Saturday. The visitors from Quebradillas managed to secure only one-point victory 88-87. However their fans expected much easier game. Indios were trailing by 4 points at halftime but managed to get 2-point lead after three quarters before a 24-21 charge of Piratas, which allowed them to win the game. They also forced 21 Indios turnovers. Americans were the main players on the court. The best player for the winners was guard Melo Trimble (190-95, college: Maryland) who scored 24 points. Forward Reyshawn Terry (203-84, college: UNC) chipped in 19 points and 5 rebounds. We cannot really consider it an upset in the game between close teams in Arecibo where 5th ranked Leones (10-9) were crushed by sixth ranked Capitanes (10-12) 105-80 on Friday. The game without a history. Capitanes led from the first minutes and controlled entire game increasing their lead in each quarter. Capitanes outrebounded Leones 38-27 including 27 on the defensive glass. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 29 assists. American forward Victor Rudd (205-91, college: S.Florida) stepped up and scored 24 points for the winners and the former international forward Carlos Lopez-Sosa (208-90, college: UNLV) chipped in 13 points and 9 rebounds. Five Capitanes players scored in double figures. The best for the losing side was American Nick Minnerath (207-88, college: Detroit Mercy) with 23 points and the former international swingman Angel-Daniel Vassallo (198-86, college: Virginia Tech) scored 14 points. The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. Capitanes have a solid series of three victories in a row. Defending champion maintains sixth place with 10-12 record. Leones lost third consecutive game. They keep the fifth position with nine games lost. Capitanes will face Vaqueros (#7) in Bayamon in the next round. Leones will play on the road against Indios in Mayaguez and hope to win that game.

Vaqueros looked well-organized offensively handing out 33 assists. Forward Benito Santiago (198-89, college: Cumberlands) stepped up and scored 24 points for the winners and American center Greg Smith (208-91, college: Fresno St.) chipped in 12 points and 10 rebounds. The best for the losing side was Dominican point guard Juan Miguel Suero (198-93) with 16 points, 7 rebounds and 7 assists and American guard Jahvari Josiah (193-93, college: Coppin St.) scored 18 points and 8 rebounds. Five Vaqueros and four Cariduros players scored in double figures. Both coaches allowed to play bench players saving starting five for next games. Vaqueros have a solid series of four victories in a row. They moved-up to seventh place. Cariduros lost third consecutive game. They keep the fourth position with 12 games lost. Veteran forward Will Daniels(202-F-86, college: URI) signed with Leones de Ponce and is expected to join the team on Sunday. Daniels played in BSN for Guaynabo, Quebradillas and Fajardo. In 2017 he won a championship with Quebradillas. He recently played in France with Levallois where he averaged 10.8 points in 14 games.
