Reggaeton Has Made Basketball Popular in Puerto Rico

In recent years, basketball in Puerto Rico has attracted not only local but also international attention. Credit goes to reggaeton stars Bad Bunny, Ozuna and Anuel AA for breathing new life into Puerto Rico's professional league. It revitalised sports arenas that used to be half-empty. Today, however, the stadiums are visited by thousands of loyal fans. Sports fans only need to download BC Game to keep up to date with all the events of the league and not to miss any interesting game.

The Crisis and Revival of Basketball in Puerto Rico

The Puerto Rican Men's League (BSN), which came into existence in 1929, was once considered one of the strongest in all of Latin America. But as of 2018, interest in basketball battles has declined to a critical 480,000 tickets sold per season. The main reason for the decline was the economic instability in the region, due to which funding and investment in sports development decreased.

All that changed in 2021 when 3-time Grammy Award winning singer Bad Bunny became co-owner of Los Cangrejeros de Santurce. Other famous artists followed suit: Anuel AA bought Arecibo's Capitanes and Ozuna bought Manatí, which was later renamed Los Osos.

Basketball as a Symbol of Puerto Rico's Cultural Renaissance

Basketball has become a real cultural phenomenon that has influenced the social life of the islanders. BSN matches have become events that attract world-class celebrities, including:
  • NBA legend LeBron James;
  • Former boxer Floyd Mayweather;
  • Arcangel reggaeton performers;
  • Reggaeton performers Rauw Alejandro.
Their appearance in stadiums raised the status of the league and gave a boost to the popularisation of the game among the youth. By 2023, the Puerto Rico Men's Basketball League games had millions of spectators. The number of tickets sold per season increased nearly 2.5 times.

Rebooting the Puerto Rico Basketball League

More than 40 years ago, BSN was at the height of its popularity. In the past, teams from Bayamon, Quebradillas, Ponce and other cities gave the world:
  • Butch Lee - the first Puerto Rican in the NBA;
  • Ruben Rodriguez, the star of Los Vaqueros of Bayamon;
  • Raymond Dalmau, the NBA's all-time leader in points and assists.
Now former NBA players Will Barton and Jared Sullinger have joined the team from San Juan. DeMarcus Cousins, Lance Stephenson, and Brandon Knight played in the league before making the switch.

Despite its heyday, BSN is facing serious challenges that are beyond its control. These include budget cuts. Over the past decade, the government has reduced funding for the sports sector by more than 50 per cent. The shortfall in investment has affected the quality and regularity of maintenance of sports arenas. As a result, organisers have to cancel matches on rainy days due to roof damage.

"Despite the lack of economic resources, we have been able to solve the problem," said Ray Quiñones, Puerto Rico's secretary of sports and recreation, whose budget was cut from $15,300 in 2014 to $7,500 in 2024.

An additional challenge for stadiums remains chronic power outages across Puerto Rico, which is still rebuilding the electrical grid after Hurricane Maria. The disaster hit the island in September 2017. In June, a game in Carolina between local team Los Gigantes and Los Indios of Mayagüez was suspended after a massive power outage that left more than 340,000 subscribers without light. A month earlier, a match at San Juan's main arena was also suspended due to power outages.

Basketball is a Symbol of Transformation in Puerto Rico

Despite the challenges, the youth of Puerto Rico are proud of the achievements of local basketball players, as evidenced by the high attendance at games. For many, the sport has become not only a recreational activity, but also a motivator to achieve their goals.

"The number of entertainers at basketball games is amazing, and you always dream of meeting one of them at one of the games," shares 27-year-old Annais Ramirez, who wears a necklace with the symbol of her hometown Carolina.

Her devotion to the Carolina team goes beyond the hope of meeting celebrities. In her spare time, Annais follows games via social media, watching the best moments and performances she couldn't track down in person. "It's inspiring and makes you become a part of what's going on. Watching games on weekdays helps me relax," she says.
