The St.Kitts Amateur Basketball Association National Basketball League began this past Sunday in front of a fair-sized crowd at basketball city.
The 2010 edition of the annual league started with an Official Opening Ceremony which saw a march past that boosted most of the almost 30 teams that will be taking part in this years tournament. The Opening ceremony got off to a relatively late start but proceeded smoothly with the team inspection which was taken by the new Minister of Sports and former SKABA Player the Hon. Glen Ghost Philip in addition to the representative of the major sponsor, Mr. David Lake of LIME as well as Mr. Alphonso Bridgewater NOC President and Lloyd Lazaar Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Sports.

After the march past Remarks were given by SKABA president Mr. James Barman Hanley who stunned the crowd and players when he announced that SKABA had been served a legal document concerning a player. The President stated that he was advised by the associations lawyers that the defending Champions Horsfords Horsfords Ghetto Roots should not play on the opening nights exhibition match-ups. Hanley informed the audience that the St.Pauls Tuff Knots would play instead.
Hanley said [Horsfords Ghetto Roots] have asked us not to fixture any games for them until a decision is taken. We consulted with our lawyers and they advised us not to let them play that game [against BVI] pending the matter going before the appeals board, Hanley told the gathered crowd.
The Horsfords Ghetto Roots players as well as Head Coach Dr.Garfeild Alexander and Assistant Coach/Manager Dwayne Sturge were visibly stunned by the announcement as both declared that no official letter or word was given that the team will not play.
The SKABA was served with legal documents from Head Coach of the Horsfords Ghetto Roots Dr. Garfeild Alexander challenging the decision to bar a Horsfords Ghetto Roots player from playing with a religuous head-wrap which is contrary to the FIBA rules.
President of the National Olympic Committee, Mr. Alphonso Bridgewater also gave some remarks . In addition to LIME Country Manager Mr. David Lake. The league was officially opened by the Hon. Glen Ghost Phillip who among other pronouncements gave the basketball fraternity the assurance that a multi-purpose indoor facility for basketball and some other disciplines including the arts is on the horizon. This delighted the scores of basketball players and hundreds of basketball fans and enthusiasts in attendance. Hon. Phillip also paid homage to SKABA legend Trevor Marty Huggins by presenting him with a trophy for his over 30 years as a player in the SKABA League.
The second half of the Official Opening nights event saw the start of the first of the two exhibition games which were supposed to be the highlights of the evening. However the games became just a backdrop to President Hanleys announcement concerning the legal documents that was served and the subsequent decision to bar the Horsfords Ghetto Roots from playing in the nights final game. The crowds were in heavy debate over the decision to pull the Horsfords Ghetto Roots team and as to whether or not the player in question should be allowed to play.
The first exhibition game between the Rams Hitters and the Antigua Defense Force Warriors turned out to be an extremely unexciting one-sided affair as the Hitters seemed out of sync while the Warriors were clicking on all cylinders. The very one-sided affair continued into the 3rd quarter when the game and the entire nights event was called off due to rain. At the time of the referees final blow Hitters were down 33 points 60-27.
This ended what was easily a very memorable night for the St.Kitts Amateur Basketball Association.
This was certainly a very interesting opening on all accounts, said SKABA General Secretary Wallis Wilkin. It was certainly memorable as it was the first Official Opening as Minister of Sports of SKABA alumni Hon. Glen Ghost Phillip as well as the first time that I can recall in recent times that an opening night has been cut short by rain. And of course the announcement of pending legal actions against the association by one of the SKABA teams no doubt makes this opening one of the most interesting and memorable openings of any sport in St.Kitts in recent history, the General Secretary continued.
The league continues this week with games being played everyday except Wednesday with the game of the week on Sundays. This weeks game of the week next Sunday April 18th will see a repeat of last years final as defending champions Horsfords Horsfords Ghetto Roots goes up against former champions Rams Hitters

Why mini Kevin Durant' St.Kitts Top NBA Pick Jonathan Isaac has the Draft's highest ceiling - 1 Year ago
The concept of an NBA prospect having a 'high ceiling is something that's often discussed, but rarely defined. Is this the most exciting thing we can say about a player on draft night, meaning that, someday, he could become that franchise cornerstone every team needs? Or are we saying that a player has the physical attributes and the athletic prowess to round into a phenomenal basketball player, if he puts in the hard work and gets some lucky breaks? Or is that term a backhanded complime...   [read more]
