Basseterre, St.Kitts (May 2nd 2006) :-In easily the most exciting match since the inauguration of the National Bank SKABA female league during the 2005 season the Western Union Cayon outlasted the First Caribbean International Lady Blue Devils in a thriller.
The Lady Devils took advantage of there rural counterparts in the early going as last season’s MVP Leondra Cotton led her team scoring most of the teams 19 first half points. The Blue Devils dominated the early going enjoying a 19-14 lead at the end of the first half. The second half saw the Cayon team showing much more poise and determination as national players Kemar Herbert and Pamella Huggins asserted themselves both on the offensive and defensive end. Herbert took control of the boards as she dominated, taking some 13 rebounds including 9 in the second half alone. Huggins was much more offensive minded as she scored all 8 of her points in the second half as the Cayon team gave the defending champs all they could handle. The teams traded leads for the entire 4th quarter until finally climaxing with the Cayon team holding on to a very slim 1 point lead and thus earning themselves the 2006 National Bank SKABA Female League Championship. Leondra Cotton of the Lady Devils had a spectacular 25-point effort to lead all scorers with teammate Vanessa Parris supporting well with 7 points and a game high 15 rebounds. Kemar Herbert had a Herculean effort with some 15 points and 13 rebounds while Pamella Huggins had 8 points and 3 rebounds.
“I am extremely proud of the girls, they worked hard and they really played to win especially in the second half,” said Coach Ty O’Loughlin of the Cayon team.
The Lady Devils have dominated the female league since it’s inception winning both the inaugural National Bank female league and the Renee Diguilio out of season league losing less than 3 games in the process. However the Cayon team did some heavy out-of season recruiting and has assembled what many basketball pundits have labeled an all star girls team. The recruitment drive by Cayon certainly payed off as it has resulted in the team winning it’s first female league title.
