Sophia Young top-scores but loses in the semis- March 13, 2008Sophia Young (186-F-83, college: Baylor) and Galatasaray did not manage to upset Schio in the EuroCup semis and advance to the Final. Having built a hopeful 8-point buffer in Istanbul Galatasaray looked forward to securing it in Schio. But the hosts turned out too good for Galatasaray beating them 84:67. Sophia Young scored a jumper to put the visitors up at the start of the game but it was the last time the Turkish side enjoyed the lead in the encounter. Elisabetta Moro drained a three-pointer to ignite a 16:6 run from the hosts to make it 20:10 with 3 minutes to play in the first frame. Sophia Young scored 6 points to keep Galatasaray alive but Schio still finished the first term up by 9 points 26:17. The things got even worse for the visitors as Federica Ciampoli and Raffaella Masciadri extended the gap early in the second period. Laura Macchi and Elisabetta Moro drilled back-to-back trebles and Schio ran away to a 36:21 distance. Isil Alben and Petra Ujhelyi scored 4 free throws and Sophia Young added a jumper to drag Galatasaray within 13 points from Schio. Federica Ciampoli and Bethany Donaphin fired 6 points late in the first half to seal the outcome at 48:31 for Italian side at the long break. Sophia Young remained delivering for Turkish team as she notched 4 more points early in the third term. However Bernadette Ngoyisa dropped 5 in a row and Masciadri added a three-pointer as Schio built an unassailable 60:35 advantage with less than 4 minutes left in the third stanza. Sophia Young was obviously the lone fighter in the field for Galatasaray as she knocked down 4 free throws to trim the deficit a bit. Petra Ujhelyi had the last say in the period and the visitors entered the fourth quarter trailing by 21 points. The teams traded baskets throughout the major part of the fourth frame and Galatasaray struggled to come any closer. They finally closed the gap to 17 points on free throws from Sophia Young but Laura Macchi dropped 4 straight free throws to deny any hopes for Turkish team. Schio celebrated a confident win at the end and would fight against BC Moscow in the EuroCup final. Bethany Donaphin dropped 20 points and collected 8 boards for Schio. Laura Macchi and Raffaella Masciadri scored 14 points in a win. Sophia Young was outstanding for Galatasaray with 22 points and 10 boards. Petra Ujhelyi had 15 points and 11 boards in defeat. |
