The Bequia Community High team one and the Petit Bordel Secondary team one, emerged the male and female division, respectively, in the first ever schools' 3 x 3 Basketball tournament. Their crowning moments came in last Friday afternoon finals, played at the Girls' High School's hard court.
Bequia Community High (BCH) squeezed past the George Stephens Senior Secondary 9-8, after the two had played to a 7-7 tie in the 10 minutes of regulation time. On their way to the final, BCH had a 7-4 win over the Bequia Seventh Day Adventist team one , while the George Stephens Senior Secondary strolled past Bequia Seventh Day Adventist team two, 10-3.
Meanwhile, the Petit Bordel Secondary also narrowly got home over fellow North Leeward institution- Troumaca, 3-2, in the females final. The winning unit had a 4-3 win over the Girls' High School team three, while runner- up Troumaca, got past Bishop's College Kingstown team one, 6-3 in the other semi- finals. Taking the Most Valuable Male Player of the two-day tournament was Bequia Community High's Nicholas Lewis, with the Petit Bordel Secondary's Ranique Harry doing likewise among the females. Apart from trophies for the winning teams, runners-up and the Most Valuable Players, in store for the Bequia Community High School and the Petit Bordel Secondary will each receive a HP Laser Jet 2600 printer. Also, all participating schools were listed to receive two Wilson 3 x 3 basketballs each, while those entering teams in both the male and female divisions were promised five basketballs each. Another promise to the Bequia Community High and the Petit Bordel Secondary is ongoing technical support from the SVG Basketball Federation to their schools' respective Basketball programme. The two-day 3 x 3 schools' tournament, played last Thursday and Friday, was used to select players to suffice the SVG schools' teams for the upcoming Windward Islands Schools' Games, which are scheduled here in July. Seen as a fast paced format, 3 x 3 Basketball is played using half of the court, with each team consisting of four players, with three on court during the 10-minute match. Every successful shot inside the arc is awarded one point, while every successful shot behind the arc is awarded two points. There is 12- seconds shot-clock, with the first team to reach 21 points or best after 10 minutes, declared the winner. If scores are locked at the end of the 10 minutes, over time is played.
