Quito welcomes South American Cup for Clubs

Medellin - Santiago 87:49
The South American Cup for Womens Clubs tipped off in Ecuador yesterday. Eight best teams around the continent are to fight for the trophy. The tournament will be the first one in seven years.
Colombian Medellin toppled Santiago from Chile in the opening game in Group A. Yaneth Arias (188-F-82, agency: Next Level) scored 19 points and pulled down 6 rebounds to lead the Colombian champions.
Medellin opened the game confidently building a 26:12 lead after ten minutes. Santiago managed to slow their opponents down a bit in the second quarter but still trailed by 18 points at halftime. Medellin continued to roll easily in offense as they piled up a massive 28-point lead after three quarters. Santiago scored only 11 points in the fourth frame and had to surrender at the end. Tatiana Mosquera (195-C-89) netted 16 points and grabbed 9 rebounds for Medellin. Elisa Garcia had 11 points and 8 rebounds in the win. Romina Valenzuela (178-F-86) responded with 12 points for Santiago. Javiera Novion had 10 points in defeat.
Medellin outrebounded their opponents 47:37 and forced those to 28 turnovers. Medellin will next face Ourinhos, while Santiago will play against Univalle from Bolivia.

Ourinhos - Univalle 98:45
Ourinhos coasted to their first win at the South American Cup for Clubs in Ecuador. They opened the action against Univalle and ensured a comfortable win at the end. Mama Dantas (192-C-78) notched 22 points and pulled down 11 boards to propel the Brazilian team to 1-0 record in preliminary Group A.
Ourinhos jumped off the blocks to dominate early. They limited the Bolivian side to just 8 points in the opening quarter gaining a 16-point lead at the first break. Univalle botched up the second frame trailing by as many as 32 points at the interval. The teams traded baskets in the third quarter but Univalle failed to come any closer. Ourinhos finished off their opponents in the final term claiming a brilliant victory in the opener.
Tayara Pesenti knocked down 17 points for Ourinhos. Karen Rocha had 16 points in the win. Laura Florida responded with 13 points for Univalle. Mirian Justiniano and Jannete Via canned 10 points each in defeat. Ourinhos enjoyed a 37:21 advantage on the glass and forced Univalle to 21 turnovers. The Bolivian team shot only 26% from the field in the loss.

U.T.E - Regatas Lima 95:53

U.T.E secured the initial win at the South American Cup for Clubs in Quito. They overcame Regatas Lima of Peru to climb on top of preliminary Group B. U.T.E are scheduled to meet Uruguayan Malvin in the second round. Regatas will try to rebound against Central Enterriano.
The teams kept it close in the opening minutes. But soon U.T.E unloaded a 10:3 rally that put them up 21:11 at the end of the starting stanza. The Ecuadorian side notched 24 points in the second quarter to build a 19-point lead at halftime. Regatas were unable to recover in the third term. U.T.E continued to dominate and cruised to a 30-point advantage at three-quarter time. The hosts eased to the win in the final quarter drawing first blood at the competition.
Maria Espinoza (-83) delivered 20 points to pace U.T.E. Kelly Santos added 18 points and 8 rebounds for the winners. Paola Ferrari (178-G/F-85) answered with 18 points for Regatas Lima. Maria Bellatin had 14 points in the loss.

Central Enterriano - Malvin 94:73
Argentinean Central Enterriano secured the opening win at the South American Cup for Clubs held in Ecuador. They toppled Malvin of Uruguay in preliminary Group B. The teams are fighting for two spots that guarantee the birth in the semis of the tournament.
Malvin got to a cruising start to the game. They built an 11-point lead before Central Enterriano clipped the margin at 8 points with ten minutes gone. The Argentinean team pushed harder in the second stanza and trimmed the distance to a single point at halftime.
Central Enterriano went off the locker room a different team. They avalanched by their opponents with a 20:2 rally and ensured a 62:46 advantage at three quarter time. The Argentinean powerhouse dropped 32 points in the fourth quarter and never looked back en route to the victory at the end.
Liliana Tamburlini (-81) tallied 23 points, 7 boards and 4 assists to lead the charge. Erica Sanchez (182-F/C-76) had 18 points, 7 boards and 4 assists in the victory. Lucia Guadalupe responded with 17 points for Malvin. Daniela Tovagliari finished with 16 points in the loss.
Central Enterriano will face Regatas Lima, while Malvin will take on U.T.E from Ecuador in the second round.
