Defending champions De Arend tightened their grip on the Surinaamse Basketbalassociatie women's competition, hammering archrivals Yellow Birds 61-34 in a direct duel for first place to all but lock up the No. 1 seed.
It was the second lopsided win in a row over the "Gele Vogels," following a 74-48 rout on April 19. The decisive blow on Sunday was a 13-0 run bridging the second and third quarters that turned a narrow 24-23 edge into a 37-23 lead, with Yellow Birds going six minutes and 45 seconds without a point and not scoring in the third period until the 5:26 mark. De Arend's defense did the rest: they held Yellow Birds to just 11 points in the entire second half, including only four all from the free-throw line in the fourth quarter, while scoring 15 themselves.
Coach Mitchell Zeefuik admitted his side had been sluggish early, hampered by dreadful free-throw shooting (28 missed from 41 on the night), which let Yellow Birds hang around in the first half. The turnaround came from a halftime defensive challenge he told his players that if they defended until the whistle, they would win, and singled out sub-captain and top scorer Mirelva Marica (170-PG-2002) for her work against Seregay Blankendal. The message landed, and De Arend smothered Yellow Birds after the break.
Yellow Birds assistant coach Chayenne Naarden conceded her team was a shadow of itself after halftime, unable to execute at either end, and said the answer was simple: more training, with defense the priority heading into the postseason. Chiniqua Pengel (174-G-2005) endured a rough night for Yellow Birds missing 14 of 21 free throws over the final three quarters though she still top-scored with 15 points and provided a rare highlight with an at-the-buzzer half-court shot to close the third. Marica led De Arend with 13 points, backed by Morena Leter (182-G-1992)'s 12.
With the standings now in De Arend's favor, attention turns to the remaining makeup games set for June 7 and June 14 before the SBA play-offs tip off on June 21.
