TACARIGUA, Trinidad and Tobago Southside
Elite survived a spirited second-half comeback from the Morvant Oilbirds before
pulling away in the fourth quarter for a 79-69 victory in Game 8 of the
EIG EBL on Saturday night in Tacarigua. Morvant trailed throughout the contest but
refused to go away. The Oilbirds finally grabbed their first lead late in the
third quarter when forward Obel Guerra converted with five seconds remaining
to put Morvant ahead 55-54. But Southside had the final say in the period. With the Oilbirds unable to close out
defensively, Akheem Boyd drained a three-pointer just before the buzzer,
swinging the momentum back to Southside heading into the fourth. The Elite then capitalized on a difficult
fourth quarter for Morvant. The Oilbirds began forcing shots and committing
several unforced turnovers, allowing Southside to regain control and finish
with the 10-point victory. Valley dominates inside Jelani Valley was
Southside's most efficient performer, finishing with 15 points and 18
rebounds, including eight offensive boards. He shot an outstanding 7-for-8
(87.5%) from two-point range, added one steal and two blocks and finished
with a game-high 28 EFF and 17.2 Game Score. His 76.8% TS% was
also the best among Southside's principal contributors. Akheem Boyd supplied the scoring punch
with 28 points, four rebounds, three assists and five steals. Boyd
knocked down 7-of-22 from three-point range and went 3-for-5 at the
free-throw line. His 21 EFF and 20.1 Game Score ranked second among
Southside players. Jason Friday added 12 points, four
rebounds, three assists and three steals, while also blocking a shot. He
finished with a 12 EFF and 9.9 Game Score. Mikkiel Phillip
contributed eight points and six rebounds, shooting a perfect 2-for-2
from two-point range and finishing with a 10 EFF and 7.3 Game Score. Ronaldo Pamler added six points, including two
three-pointers, while Tyrik Singh finished with eight points, six rebounds and
four assists. Singh's seven turnovers, however, were the most by any Southside
player. Guerra
powers Oilbirds The athletic Guerra nearly completed the
comeback on his own. He finished with 21 points and 18 rebounds,
including five offensive boards, while recording two steals and three blocks.
Guerra shot 9-for-16 (56.2%) from the field and finished with an
outstanding 26 EFF and 16.1 Game Score. His 18 rebounds matched Valley's total and
underscored the battle being waged in the paint. Tyrese Fields gave
Morvant a major threat from outside, scoring 18 points on six three-pointers
from 15 attempts. He added two rebounds, one assist and one steal,
finishing with an 8 EFF and 6.3 Game Score. Juan Lopez had a strong playmaking
night with 12 points and five assists, while also recording two steals.
He shot 3-for-8 from two and 2-for-3 from beyond the arc but committed five
turnovers. His final EFF was 9, with a 5.8 Game Score. Jonathan Thomas
contributed nine points, five rebounds, four steals and one block. He was
particularly efficient, going 3-for-5 on two-pointers and 1-for-1 from three,
producing a 16 EFF and 11.1 Game Score. Rashan Hope also made a significant
contribution on the boards with 15 rebounds, eight of them offensive,
along with five points, two assists and two steals. He posted an 18 EFF and
10.9 Game Score. Southside
makes the key plays The team numbers reveal an interesting
contrast. Southside shot an excellent 66.7% from
two-point range (18-for-27) but struggled from deep, making just 10-of-43
three-point attempts (23.3%). The Elite also converted 13-of-25 free throws
for 52%. Morvant shot 45.2% from two-point range
(19-for-42) and was more accurate from three, knocking down 9-of-22
(40.9%). However, the Oilbirds struggled severely at the free-throw line,
making only 4-of-13 (30.8%). Morvant actually controlled the rebounding
battle 49-39, with Guerra and Hope combining for 33 rebounds. Southside,
however, had the advantage in several other important areas, including 11
assists to 10, 12 steals to 15. while Southside committed 14
turnovers compared with 20 for Morvant. That six-turnover advantage became
especially important down the stretch. Southside finished with a 77 team EFF and
57.4 Game Score, compared with Morvant's 82 EFF and 49.3 Game Score.
The figures underline how competitive the overall statistical battle was
despite Southside's eventual 10-point margin. Buzzer-beater
changes the game For Morvant, the most frustrating moment came
after it had finally done enough to move in front. Guerra's basket with five seconds left gave
the Oilbirds a 55-54 lead and appeared to reward their persistence after
spending the entire game in pursuit. Instead, a defensive breakdown gave Boyd just
enough time to launch the three before the horn. Southside entered the fourth quarter back in
front and then took advantage as Morvant's offense became increasingly hurried.
The Oilbirds' forced attempts and turnovers opened the door for Elite to
establish the separation it had been unable to create earlier. Southside ultimately closed out the 79-69
win, with Valley's dominance on the glass and Boyd's scoring and defensive
pressure providing the statistical foundation, while Guerra's enormous
double-double kept Morvant within striking distance for most of the night. Game 9:
Boyd's 38 Points Power Clippers Past Spartans In the feature game of the night, Ahkeel
Boyd erupted for 38 points and Caledonia Clippers turned in a dominant
offensive performance Saturday night, pulling away from Spartans TT for a 95-74
victory in Game 9 of the EIG EBL. Boyd was virtually unstoppable, combining
inside scoring with a steady three-point attack to lead the Clippers to their
21-point triumph. The official Game 9 report records the final score as Caledonia
Clippers 95, Spartans TT 74 at Tacarigua. Boyd finished 8-for-12 (66.7%) from
two-point range, 5-for-13 (38.5%) from three and a perfect 7-for-7
at the free-throw line. He added four rebounds, two assists and four
steals. His statistical impact was enormous: 30.0
EFF, 25.5 Game Score and 130.7% TS%, all game-leading figures. Clippers
get plenty of support Boyd was not alone. Adrian Joseph supplied 21
points, four rebounds and three steals, shooting 5-for-8 on two-pointers
and 3-for-10 from three. He was perfect from the free-throw line and finished
with an 18.0 EFF and 15.9 Game Score. The Clippers also received an outstanding
rebounding performance from Miguel Williams, who grabbed 14 rebounds
despite scoring only one point. Williams added four assists and three steals
and finished with a 17.0 EFF and 7.2 Game Score. Jason Best contributed eight points,
six rebounds, four steals and a block, while Brian Sanchez was perfect
from the field, going 2-for-2 and adding a steal and a block in limited action. Caledonia's depth was reflected in its overall
numbers. The Clippers shot 53.3% from two-point range, made nine
three-pointers and converted 20-of-31 free throws (64.5%). They also
collected 40 rebounds and generated an impressive 24 steals. Francis
keeps Spartans competitive Spartans TT had one major answer in William
Francis. Francis produced a strong 22-point,
11-rebound double-double, shooting a remarkable 9-for-9 from two-point
range and 4-for-5 from the free-throw line. He finished with a 24.0 EFF
and 15.8 Game Score, making him the Spartans' most effective player. Amaree Toney added 13 points on 6-for-8
shooting, while Tristan Benjamin also scored 13 and connected on two
of his three three-point attempts. Toney finished with an 8.6 Game Score,
while Benjamin posted 3.5. Freedom Leon provided eight points, six
rebounds, four steals and a block, producing a 13.0 EFF and 9.7 Game Score. But Spartans' inability to take care of the
basketball ultimately undermined those individual efforts. The team committed a
costly 32 turnovers, compared with 25 for Caledonia. Spartans also
struggled badly from long range, shooting just 3-for-19 (15.8%) from
three-point range. Clippers
win the efficiency battle The statistical gap tells the story. Caledonia shot 53.3% from two, compared
with 53.1% for Spartans, but the Clippers generated considerably more
opportunities through their defense. Caledonia recorded 24 steals, 17
more than its opponent's 17? More precisely, the team totals show 24 steals for
Caledonia and 17 for Spartans a seven-steal advantage. The Clippers also held a 40-36 rebounding
advantage and produced 12 assists to Spartans' eight. Most significantly,
Caledonia committed 25 turnovers while Spartans gave the ball away 32
times. Caledonia finished with a 73.5 team Game
Score and 53.6% TS%, while Spartans TT posted a 35.2 Game Score and 48.2%
TS%. In the end, Boyd's explosive scoring night
provided the headline, but Caledonia's defensive pressure, depth and ability to
convert opportunities separated the Clippers from the Spartans. Final: Caledonia Clippers 95, Spartans TT 74 For the first time, action moves to the Maloney Indoor
Sporting Arena, where Spartans TT (1-2) meet Morvant Oilbirds (0-3) at 7:30
p.m., before Caledonia Clippers (2-1) take on NC Warriors (1-2) at 9:00 p.m. |
