Grande new 4x4 basketball hub

Jeffrey Harris, left, coordinator of the Sangre Grande Ruff & Ready 4v4 Basketball League, shares a moment with veteran player Steven "Lighter" Lewis, on the opening day of the tournament on August 25 at the Foster Road Sangre Grande basketball court. Howeger, when the two players meet on court, Harris with the Maloney-based Stories of Success (SOS) basketball team and Lewis with D'Hill of Laventille Harris it will be in a battle aimed at the $10,000 first place prize.

Forward Kern George netted an easy lay-up to score the winning point for the Stories of Success (SOS) team in its 41-35 victory over Sweaters of Sangre Grande in the Sangre Grande Ruff & Ready 4v4 Basketball League at the Foster Road Basketball court on Saturday.

George's final basket worth a single point to reach 41 points to bring it home for the Maloney-based SOS team in the inaugural league with a new concept to basketball competition according to coordinator Jeffrey Harris.

He said, " We got the idea from looking at FIBA 3v3 and the Big 3 League being played in the US." The main rules are as follows seven players per team - four playing with three run-in substitutes - on any dead ball. There is a 12-minute stoppage time per half. One point per basket inside the arc, two points per basket outside the arc, and three points per basket once scored from the three-point spot identified on the court.

There are two ways a team can win, the first is having the most points at the end of stoppage time or the team, which reaches 41 points first, wins.

"Popular local basketball players are participating in the excitement while we bring to T&T, the 'Rocka Park' experience. We have player interviews, fans interviews, an in-game DJ and commentary and every night giveaways," said Harris, adding to the thrill of the innovative competition, which has 10 teams competing for the $10,000 first place prize. The runner-up receives $5,000 and the third place finisher gets $3,000.

The other teams are Buckets of Arouca, Ball Hungry of St Augustine, D'Hill of Lavantille, Golden State (Valencia), Sangre Grande All Stars, Grande Ext (Sangre Grande), Rebels (Sangre Grande) and Hey Now (Tacarigua).

Harris works on a committee that include Kevin Thomas, Mickiel Williams, Francis Harris and Marlon Burnett , all of the Sangre Grande community for a tournament sponsored by Savings & Deals Supermarket, Cost Cutters Supermarket, Darryl's Famous Foods, Juteram Auto Supply, Phats International, Be The Change Movement, and other community members of Sangre Grande.

George will be back on the court tomorrow (Saturday) with his SOS team aiming for its third straight win after beating Hey Now, 41-38, last Friday. The Maloney unit will play Ball Hungry, who has a win against Grande Ext (35-24) and a loss to Buckets (33-30).
