Contributions from guard Richard Guiseppi (G) and post player Moriba De Freitas ensured that Straker Nets remained unbeaten to advance to the "Big Four" segment as the top team from Group A after a narrow 66-64 win over Detour Shak Attack in the Men's Premier Division of the Barry Stewart Basketball League on Thursday night. Guiseppi led with 11 points while De Freitas added 10 in a low-scoring affair, the second match of a doubleheader in the "Big Eight" which unfolded at the Jean Pierre Complex in Port-of-Spain. Play in the first quarter was balanced with Shak Attack holding the edge, 19-18, at the end of the first quarter. Straker though did not retreat and raced a to a 42-28 advantage by the end of the first half. The lone unbeaten team thus far in the competition maintained its control into the third quarter, leading by 15 points (55-40), going into the fourth and final quarter. It was here that Shak Attack led by Reynold Hospedales, the only player score in double digits with 10, started to recover and trim away at Straker's lead. Shak Attack managed to outscore the Nets, 24-11 but it was insufficient. Though disappointed over the loss Shak Attack is still in with a chance to claim the title as it finished second to qualify for the "Big Four".
In the earlier match, an intense match-up between Police and Maloney Pacers saw the affair go into to extra-time after the scores were tied at 83-83, to determine the winner but it ended prematurely as the latter team's coach Christopher Jackson Charles was ejected but refused to leave the court. With three minutes to plat in overtime, Pacers were trailing by three (87-90) and his action resulted in the match being called off by the officials.
