In a game that delivered every ounce of drama expected from what has developed into a fierce rivalry, the underdog Morvant Oilbirds basketball team pulled off a heart-stopping 65-64 victory over the highly favoured TT Defense Force squad in what can only be described as a classic. Though the army team entered as the favorites following their impressive victory earlier in the week and led for nearly the entire game, Oilbirds' resilience, strategy, and sheer willpower sealed an unforgettable win in the closing seconds.

This latest chapter in their competitive saga saw both teams battle with intensity from start to finish in the Kelvin Roberts North Zone Basketball Commission’s League First Division on June 15 at Woodbrook Youth Center.

What made this contest even more remarkable was the physical toll it took—so intense was the action that four key players could not finish the game. Oilbirds lost guard Kevon Williams, center/captain Rashwan Hope and forward Johnathan Thomas to muscle cramps in the fourth quarter, while Defense Force veteran standout guard Kensley Sandy exited with a hamstring injury early in the 2nd quarter, dramatically shifting the game's momentum and forcing both teams into tactical adjustments.

From the tip-off, Oilbirds opened strong scoring the first four points, but quickly found themselves trailing. Defense Force led by their sharp shooter Kerry McMillan with a game high 19pts took charge early, leading 21-14 at the end of the first quarter, 39-36 at halftime, and 49-47 after three periods. They looked in control after extending the lead to 54-49 early in the fourth quarter with a deep three from an unmarked Christian Arthur.

However, Oilbirds displayed its grit, began to rally—despite adversity. Their game-long energy sparked further with better offensive display and defensive intensity. Adding to their challenge, Oilbirds forward Obel Guerra, who started the game, picked up three personal fouls plus a technical early in the second quarter and had to sit out until the fourth. It was a gamble that paid off. His return in the final minutes would prove decisive. He had scored 8pts before going to the bench and seven on his return in the final period including a slash cut from the wing after receiving a timely pass from Antonio Ambris that briefly levelled the score at 49-49.

With just under three minutes left in regulation time and their opponents in foul trouble, Oilbirds' head coach, Casey Belgrave, made a bold strategic move—subbing out power forward Jose Mays, who was having a good game that included critical 6-pts in the quarter, for the quicker guard Dionel Guerra. The decision injected pace and disrupted the army’s defense. Guerra off a nice feed by point guard Juan Lopez responded by slicing through the defense for a layup that narrowed the score to 60-62. McMillan quickly responded to increase their lead to 64-60. Also making an impact was Ambris, who only entered the game from the second quarter. His poise at the line under pressure added two critical free throws late in the fourth to cut the army team’s lead to 62-64, keeping Oilbirds within striking distance.

Then came the dramatic finish: with five seconds remaining, Dionel stepped to the line for two free throws after been fouled attempting another lay-up. He previously missed two successive attempts at the line. However, he calmly sank the first to bring Oilbirds within one, but missed the second. But in a heroic effort, his brother - Obel, who had returned just for the fourth—grabbed the offensive rebound and laid it in, giving Oilbirds their first lead since the opening moments, 65-64.

Defense Force had one last chance. On the inbound, Ivan Williams quickly dribbled the ball just past half court and was fouled attempting a desperation three-pointer with three seconds left. Unfortunately, under immense pressure, he missed all three free throws. On the inbound pass, Obel lost possession trying to run out the clock, but Defense Force couldn’t get a clean shot off before time expired.

This game will be remembered not just for the dramatic ending, but for the courage and determination both teams showed. Oilbirds overcame injuries, foul trouble, and the weight of past heartbreak—having lost the last matchup two years ago in the dying seconds—to flip the script and claim a victory that spoke volumes about heart, teamwork, and the unpredictability of the game.

When these two meet, the outcome is never certain—but this time, Oilbirds had the final say.

Point guard Kevon Williams, who played a critical role in the first three sessions, led Oilbirds with 16pts, Obel Guerra added 15pts while Hope and Mays contributing 10pts apiece.

For Defense Force, veteran forward Kerry McMillan had a game high 19pts which included five 3-pointers and Kadeem 10pts in the losing effort.
