Straker Nets secured a convincing 91-67 triumph over Basic Basketball Academy (BBA) as the action continued in Kelvin Roberts’ North Zone Commission League at the Woodbrook Youth Center on June 26. With this victory, the Nets improved their record to 4-0, while BBA fell to 2-3. The Nets now stand alongside the Maloney Pacers as the only unbeaten teams, setting the stage for an anticipated showdown between these rivals for the top position.
Nets established control early on, holding a slender 16-13 lead at the conclusion of the first quarter. In the second quarter, BBA, spearheaded by the prolific Adam Salazar who netted a game-high 34 points, matched their more seasoned adversaries as both teams exchanged baskets at either end of the court. By halftime, the Nets maintained a narrow advantage of 32-31. Fueled by Tristan Benjamin's 21-point performance, Nets outscored BBA 36-13 in the third quarter, extending their lead to 68-44 and ultimately securing the victory, despite a valiant rally from BBA in the final period. However, the deficit proved insurmountable for the Academy. In addition to Benjamin, Sadiki Guerra contributed 16 points, while Chike Augustine added 11 for Nets. Edwin Cordoua supported BBA’s efforts with 13 points in their losing endeavor. As the season progresses, fans eagerly anticipate the upcoming clashes, particularly the impending matchup between the Nets and the Maloney Pacers. Coach KG Elite decisively triumphed over Togetherness, 89 to 55 In the opening game, Elite exhibited a commanding performance throughout the game, consistently maintaining a substantial lead with scores of 20-14, 41-13, and 67-33 by the conclusion of the third quarter. Kern George emerged as the linchpin of Elite's success, amassing an impressive tally of 28 points, while Jaden Roberts and Akeem Boyd each contributed 13 points. For Togetherness, Blessings Brewster stood out as the leading scorer with 20 points, closely followed by Timothy Belgrave, who added 18 points to the team's efforts. With this decisive victory, Elite elevated their record to 3-1, whereas Togetherness's record dipped to 1-4. Other results for the week; June 29 Under 17 Coach KG Elite triumphed over Pacers with a final score of 62-55. Elite was propelled by the outstanding performance of Josiah Andrews, who contributed 20 points, alongside Taalib Daniel, who added 13 points. The team maintained a narrow lead throughout the contest, finishing the quarters at 18-12, 34-32, and 47-44, before ultimately securing the victory with a hard-fought seven-point advantage. For Maloney Pacers, the reliable Nkobe Ince emerged as the game’s top scorer with 24 points, while Reanan Howard contributed 13 points in a valiant but unsuccessful effort. O45 Division In the second game of the evening, East West Vets triumphed over Prisons Veterans with a score of 46-40 in a contest characterized by its low scoring. Prisons commenced the first quarter with a slender lead of 9-8. However, in the subsequent quarter, East West surged ahead, establishing a one-point advantage at 19-18. From the third quarter onward, East West outperformed their adversaries, outscoring them 17-9 to conclude the period at 36-27, ultimately securing the victory. Kevin Sunich spearheaded the winning team with 11 points, while Kuris King contributed an additional 10 points. Similarly, Kern Dottin emerged as the top scorer for Prisons with 11 points, accompanied by Steve McSween, who added 10 points. June 24 First Division Royalty decisively overwhelmed the Trailblazers with a resounding score. Royalty basketball team achieved a remarkable milestone by scoring the first one hundred points in the First Division league, showcasing a commanding 102-61 performance against the beleaguered Trailblazers. With this resounding victory, Royalty elevated their record to an impressive 3-1, while Trailblazers languish in a winless state with a disheartening 0-5 record. The Royalty squad, spearheaded by Jeaiah King, who registered a game-high 20 points, dominated the latter segments with scores of 24-8, 61-24 and 84-42. King received commendable support from Christian Gilleneau, who contributed 18 points, while both Jason Best and Isaiah Mitchell chipped in with 13 points each. On the opposing side, Che Miller led Trailblazers with a hard-fought 18 points, and Bronn Sealey added 13 points in a valiant but ultimately futile effort. Morvant Oilbirds narrowly prevail over Spartans TT in yet another exhilarating encounter. Morvant Oilbirds enhanced their record to 2-2 with a hard-fought 67-65 triumph over Spartans TT (2-2) in the second match of a First Division doubleheader. This marked the Oilbirds’ third consecutive contest decided in the waning moments of regulation time, and thus far, they have achieved a commendable 2-1 in these high-pressure situations. In a fiercely contested clash, Spartans, spearheaded by the youthful Zachary Julien with 17 points, maintained a slender lead throughout the first three quarters, concluding at 13-13, 33-28, and 50-49. As the final session commenced, the intensity escalated, with Spartans surging ahead 65-61 thanks to a three-point shot from seasoned veteran Shornell Pompey. With both teams vying to enhance their standings in the league, their coaches implemented full-court pressure defense. Nevertheless, the Oilbirds capitalized on their opportunities through the efforts of Kevon Williams, Obel Guerra, and Rashwan Hope, who each contributed two points consecutively in the closing seconds, resulting in Spartans being outscored 6-0. Hope not only secured the decisive shot but also delivered arguably the play of the game with a spectacular blocked shot amidst the fray. Despite the Oilbirds' late surge, Spartans had a final chance with two seconds remaining. However, Julien’s buzzer-beater 3-point attempt off a sideline pass from Pompey was thwarted by Williams. Forward Obel Guerra led the Oilbirds with a game-high 20 points. In a commendable team effort, Guerra was ably supported by Antonio Ambris, who contributed 15 points, while Hope added 10 points, six of which came in the pivotal fourth quarter. Williams chipped in with 9 points, including 4 crucial points in the decisive minute. For the Spartans, Julien received assistance from Ivris Martin, who tallied 12 points while Pompey was limited to 7pts. |
