In yet another fiercely contested matchup on July 1 in the Kelvin Roberts North Zone Commission Basketball League, spectators were treated to a mesmerizing exhibition of long-range shooting by Spartans TT and Coach KG Elite. Despite Elite’s commendable twelve attempts from beyond the arc, Spartans, with seven three-pointers, demonstrated extraordinary skill during the overtime period, outscoring their rivals 9-2 to clinch a thrilling victory, 92-85.

From the outset, Elite, led by their national duo of Kern George and Akeem Boyd, dominated the first three quarters, leading 28-22, 48-32, and 61-59. George was on fire in the first half, sinking four three-pointers, while Boyd electrified the fourth quarter with five of his seven three-pointers before ultimately fouling out of the game. He finished with 21 points, while George amassed a game-high 31 points.

Boyd’s barrage in the closing minutes granted Elite a slender 75-74 lead. However, Jahiem Furlonge responded for Spartans with one of his three shots from beyond the arc, shifting the lead to 78-75 in favour of his team. Boyd answered back with his final three-pointer, allowing Elite to reclaim the lead at 79-78. With the game hanging in the balance, Furlonge, who contributed 20 points, converted two free throws, putting Spartans ahead 83-81. In a tense conclusion, George was fouled and converted both free throws, resulting in a tie at the end of regulation time, 83-83.

During the overtime period, Spartans seized control as Elite's offense faltered in Boyd’s absence. For Spartans, Furlonge was ably supported by Idris Martin, who tallied 17 points, including two three-pointers, while Theron Evelyn added 12 points and Shornell Pompey contributed 11 points, also with two three-pointers. Both Evelyn and Martin scored six points each for Spartans during this decisive period. Jadem Roberts made a commendable contribution for Elite, scoring 11 points, including three three-pointers, in a valiant effort.

With this victory, Spartans improved their record to 2-3, while Elite fell to 3-2. Both teams amazing tally of nineteen three-pointers is probably a record for the North Zone League.

Fans should be eager as the rivalry intensifies, with both teams aiming to secure a playoff spot—one that is increasingly competitive this season.

Defense Force lock down Trailblazers 84- 46

In the other game of the doubleheader, Defense Force exhibited commanding control throughout the contest, leading with scores of 25-10, 41-27, 63-31, and ultimately 85-46.

For Defense Force, it was a collective team effort, with Kievan Bacquain emerging as the top scorer with 12 points, while Kerry McMillan contributed 11 points. Jahiem Job added 9 points, and Christopher Nottingham rounded out the scoring with 8 points. Che Miller, on the other hand, led the Trailblazers with a remarkable game-high of 26 points, which included four three-pointers, despite the team's defeat.

Maloney Pacers triumph over Straker Nets preserving an unblemished record

In a highly anticipated clash between two previously unbeaten teams, Maloney Pacers secured a hard-fought 86-81 victory over their rivals, Straker Nets, in front of a packed audience at the Woodbrook Youth Center on July 6. This gathering marked the season's largest attendance and served as a clear indication of the rejuvenated enthusiasm and support for the sport.

Pacers, spearheaded by their exceptional national player Akeel Boyd, who amassed an impressive 34 points including three three-pointers, dictated the early tempo, establishing a commanding lead of 20-6. Boyd ignited the offense with a three-pointer and contributed seven of the Pacers' initial nine points. Despite the Pacers' early dominance, the Nets, guided by Trisan Benjamin and Sadiki Guerra—each netting 20 points—gradually chipped away at the deficit, concluding the first quarter with a score of 23-16 in favor of the Pacers. Guerra also showcased his sharpshooting ability, sinking four shots from beyond the arc in the game.

During the second quarter, both teams engaged in a fierce exchange of baskets at both ends of the court. Nevertheless, the Pacers maintained their lead, despite several players encountering foul trouble. Interestingly, Guerra's extraordinary step-back shot from the wing as the clock dwindled down kept Nets within striking distance, concluding the period at 44-40 for Pacers. This established a foundation for an exhilarating and intense clash for supremacy.

The trend continued into the third quarter, with supporters from both teams on the edge of their seats as the Nets narrowed the gap to a mere two points, the score standing at 65-63 in favor of Pacers. In the decisive final period, fans from both sides anticipated something extraordinary. However, it was Boyd who seized control for his team, scoring 13 points as the Pacers outscored the Nets 21-18 to clinch the victory.

Boyd received commendable support from the reliable Tyrese Fields, who contributed 12 points, while Shakiel Bernard, Lashawn Alfred, and Peter Alexis each added 10 points. For Nets, Chike Augustine, with 15 points, was the sole player to reach double figures.

With this triumph, Maloney Pacers preserved their unblemished record of 6-0, while the Nets fell to 4-1.The atmosphere within the Center was electric. The performance of both teams not only showcased their talent but also highlighted the inspiring spirit of competition that characterizes the league.

As the season progresses, all eyes will inevitably be on these two formidable teams, poised to continue their battle for supremacy in a league that promises thrilling encounters. Spartans TT decisively triumphed over Basic Basketball Academy with a commanding score of 108-76. The Spartans maintained a substantial lead throughout the match, with quarter scores of 31-16, 64-26, and 90-51. Williams Francis spearheaded the Spartans' offensive effort, amassing an impressive league-high total of 46 points. Idris Martin contributed significantly with 23 points, while Zachary Julien added 10 points to the tally. On the opposing side, Jairhiem McLeod was the standout performer for BBA, scoring 18 points, equaled by Amir Balgobin, who also tallied 18 points in the losing endeavor.

East West Vets triumph over National Flour Mills Vets


In the Over 45 Division, East West Vets decisively defeated National Flour Mills Veterans with a commanding score of 64-42. East West Vets maintained a lead throughout the entire match, with scores of 14-7, 34-17, and 44-33 at the end of each quarter. Kevin Sunich spearheaded East West’s performance, amassing a remarkable 22 points, while Kurvis King contributed a commendable 21 points. David King was the sole player from NFM to reach double figures, finishing with 10 points.


Steven Lewis commemorates a significant milestone as the Defense Force Veterans emerge victorious over the Sweaters Veterans.


Former national standout Steven “Lighter” Lewis delivered a game-high 24 points as the Defense Force Veterans secured a hard-fought 66-61 victory over the Sweaters Veterans in the second Over 45 Division contest on July 6.


Coincidentally, fifteen years ago on this very date, Lewis led the Trinidad and Tobago senior men's team, with a shared game high 24 points in a historic come-from-behind overtime victory, 97-91, against the eventual champions Puerto Rico, whose roster boasted NBA players, at the 2010 Centrobasket Championships in Santo Domingo.


In a similar vein, Lewis spearheaded the Army battalion, which rallied from an early quarter deficit of 20-9 to conclude the first half with a slender lead of 29-28. The third quarter witnessed both teams displaying fierce competitiveness; however, the Defense Force managed to maintain a narrow 43-30 advantage.


The final period was fraught with tension as players darted across the court, the intensity palpable. Ultimately, Lewis contributed an impressive 13 points, while Nate Toney executed the decisive shot in the waning seconds, securing a resounding victory for the Defense Force.


The game served as a remarkable celebration for Lewis, who was ably supported by Nate Toney, contributing 17 points, while Kevin Williams added 10 points to the tally. Keston Reid led the charge for the Sweaters Veterans with 11 points. Notably, Lewis’ teammate, Wayne “Sammy” Samuel, also served as a member of the same national team in the capacity of trainer/physiotherapist.
