In a stunning turn of events, Morvant Oilbirds secured a remarkable 75-72 victory over the reigning North Zone champions, Straker Nets, during the second game of the Kelvin Roberts North Zone Commission Basketball League First Division, held at the Woodbrook Youth Center on July 22.
Right from the tip-off, Oilbirds signaled their intent to compete fiercely, undeterred by the formidable presence of Nets’ imposing front court, featuring 6-9 Chike Augustine, Jerrell Doobal, also 6-9, and veteran Allister Martin, alongside the seasoned point guard Sadiki Guerra. Through the concerted efforts of Antonio Ambris, Rashwan Hope, and Johnathan Thomas, who each contributed two points in the opening five minutes, the Oilbirds quickly established a 9-2 advantage. Nevertheless, the Nets gradually mounted a comeback, and following a two-pointer from Kevon Williams, his namesake Steve Williams sank a three-pointer, narrowing the Oilbirds’ lead to 7-11. As both teams exchanged baskets, the Oilbirds managed to preserve a slender 15-11 advantage as the quarter drew to a close. In the second quarter, Amare Toney showcased his prowess, scoring sixteen of his team-high 21 points, allowing the Nets to seize control of the game and establish a 38-29 lead by the end of the first half. In the early moments of the third quarter, Juan Lopez and Ambris each sank a three-pointer, trimming the Nets’ lead to 38-34. The Nets responded effectively, ultimately outscoring their opponents 13-9 to secure a hard-fought 51-43 lead heading into the final period. Facing a must-win scenario to sustain their aspirations for a place in the Big 4, the Oilbirds amplified their intensity on both ends of the court, resolutely intent on containing the Nets. Forward Obel Guerra took the reins for the Oilbirds, tenaciously attacking the Nets’ basket and tallying five points, which enabled the Oilbirds to equalize the score at 55-55. With just under halfway through the final period, head coach Casey Belgrave reintroduced small forward Johnathan Thomas in place of power forward Jose Mays, as the Oilbirds implemented a man-to-man full-court press. Shaquille Lewis subsequently converted a free throw for the Nets, followed by a lay-up from Toney, granting the Nets a slender three-point advantage. Once again, Ambris responded with a three-pointer, leveling the scores at 58-58. In response, the Nets’ head coach Barry Stewart also transitioned to a full-court press as both teams continued to exchange baskets. However, with less than two minutes remaining, the Oilbirds, renowned for their late-game comebacks, seized the initiative with a three-pointer from Ambris, taking a 68-67 lead. With the game hanging in the balance and time dwindling, Hope, who had previously incurred his fourth foul and sat on the bench for most of the first half, executed a tip-in to extend Oilbirds' lead to 70-67. On the subsequent possession, Sadiki Guerra was fouled by Thomas and converted all three free throws, intensifying the battle at 70-70. Following an inbound pass, Kevon Williams was fouled and successfully made both free throws, propelling Oilbirds ahead 72-70. The Nets then committed a turnover, and Williams was fouled again, converting one of his two attempts to extend the Oilbirds’ lead to three points. Toney’s two point shot following a turnover brought the Nets within 73-72. The Oilbirds' relentless full-court pressure and swarming defense against the Nets’ Augustine and Martin culminated in yet another turnover. Ambris was subsequently subjected to a deliberate foul on the inbound pass with just under thirty seconds remaining. He faltered on his first free throw attempt but successfully converted the second, extending the lead to 74-72 in favor of Oilbirds. Another misstep by the Nets enabled Thomas to draw a foul on the inbound pass with five seconds remaining, and his successful free throw ultimately secured the victory for Oilbirds, who had previously trailed by as many as ten points earlier in the fourth quarter. For the Oilbirds, Ambris led the charge with 20 points, including three three-pointers, while Guerra contributed 17 points, Kevon Williams added 15 points, and Hope chipped in with 9 points. Toney was the standout for the Nets, finishing with a game-high 21 points, while Guerra scored 19 points, including two three-pointers. With this remarkable display of teamwork, Morvant Oilbirds elevated their record to 4-3, while the Straker Nets encountered a setback, descending to 5-2; nevertheless, they succeeded in preserving their position in second place within the standings, trailing only the Maloney Pacers. Other Result: Spartans TT wipe out Trailblazers In the supporting contest of the doubleheader, Spartans TT utterly dismantled the Trailblazers with a season-high score of 135 to 62 against a beleaguered Trailblazers squad. Spartans asserted their dominance from the outset, never relinquishing control over their adversaries. They maintained commanding leads throughout the game, finishing the first quarter at 21-4, the second at 67-16, and concluding the third at 96-31 before ultimately cruising to a staggering victory. For the Spartans, William Francis spearheaded the offense with 22 points, while Zachary Julien contributed 20 points. Theron Everlyn added 15 points, and both Shornell Pompey and Joshua Sueman chipped in with 12 points each, alongside Isaiah Smith, who contributed 11 points. Che Miller was the standout performer for Trailblazers, achieving a game-high 29 points, with Samuel Edwards adding 14 points in a valiant but futile effort.
