Port of Spain, Sept. 6 – The Kelvin Roberts North Zone Commission League promised fireworks on Saturday night, and it delivered. In one evening, fans witnessed a heart-stopping overtime thriller, a youth championship decided in the final minutes, and a dominant performance from a team that refuses to lose. East/West Vets Refuse to Bow Out The night began with sweat, grit, and nostalgia in the Over-45 Division Finals. East/West Vets walked onto the court knowing their season was on the line. They had been outplayed by Trinidad & Tobago Defense Force Veterans in Game 1, and many wondered if the series would end quietly. But from the opening tip, East/West showed they weren’t ready to fade. Kervis King and Kevin Sunich rained in early threes, their shots landing like declarations of intent. The Defence Force Veterans, led by the relentless Steven Lewis, clawed their way back, and by halftime, the once-comfortable lead had shrunk to just four. What followed was a tug-of-war — baskets traded, free throws contested, veterans on both sides refusing to yield. When the buzzer sounded at the end of regulation, the scoreboard read 54–54. Overtime. In those extra minutes, Lewis put on a warrior’s performance, scoring all of Defence Force’s points. Yet East/West found answers everywhere: King steady at the line, Muriam cool under pressure, Sunich striking the dagger. When the final whistle blew, the scoreboard read 64–63. East/West had survived. One more game. One last chance. Spartans TT and Coach KG Elite had split the first two games, and the decider carried the energy of a title fight. From the first possession, the fans — draped in colors, chanting, stomping — made their presence felt. William Francis set the tone with a deep three, but Elite’s Josiah Andrews responded with a scoring spree to give his team the early edge. Spartans, however, were never rattled. By the second quarter, their shooters found rhythm. Francis again from distance. Irvis Martin with back-to-back bombs. The tide shifted, and by halftime, Spartans led 41–36. The third quarter was their masterpiece. Julien, Francis, Martin — the trio moved like clockwork, extending the lead into double digits. Elite, though, were not done. In the final quarter, Jervais Edwards-Caracciolo erupted, pouring in 16 points in a desperate bid to rescue the title. But Spartans held steady. Martin carried them with big buckets down the stretch, and Julien iced it from the free-throw line. When the horn sounded, Spartans were champions, 85–80, their players leaping into the arms of a roaring fan base that had willed them to glory. For a quarter, it looked like the upset might be brewing. Nets, powered by Guerra and Benjamin, hit shots and led 18–15 after the first frame. The Pacers demonstrated patience as a team. In the second quarter, they increased their defensive intensity and executed efficiently on offense, leading to a 17–7 run that changed the score. By halftime, the momentum had shifted. The fourth quarter was where legends are made. With the crowd buzzing, Aakeel Boyd and Tyrese Fields turned the court into their personal shooting gallery. Six consecutive three-pointers rained down — each one louder than the last. By the time Boyd sank the exclamation-point triple, the game was over. Pacers 73, Nets 51. Unbeaten. Unshaken. Unstoppable. Top Performers Maloney Pacers: Aakeel Boyd 36pts (4 threes), Tyrese Fields 14pts (4 threes) Straker Nets: Triston Benjamin 15pts (1 three), Sadiki Guerra 13pts (2 threes) Quarter Scores Q1: Pacers 15 – Nets 18 Q2: Pacers 18 – Nets 7 (Halftime: Pacers 33–Nets 25) Q3: Pacers 15 – Nets 14 (Pacers 48-39) Q4: Pacers 25 – Nets 12 (Final: Pacers 73-51)
What Comes Next The stage is set for more drama: East/West and TTDF Veterans will settle their rivalry in a winner-takes-all Game 3 on September 16. Maloney Pacers can clinch their crown on September 9, while Straker Nets fight to keep the series alive. Three games. Three divisions. Three different stories. From the resilience of the veterans, to the coronation of Spartans TT, to the dominance of the Pacers, Saturday night reminded fans why basketball is as much about heart as it is about skill. |
