SANTIAGO, Dominican Rep. - The future leadership for the Turks and Caicos Basketball Men's Team was disclosed today when HAB Caicos Sonics spokesman Ciaran O'Neil officially announced that four-time Copa Mitchell Cup championship and longtime Team USA Selection head coach Travis McAvene has been named head coach of the HAB Caicos Sonics Team for the 2017-20 quadrennium. Additionally, Turks and Caicos Basketball announced today that they will be participating in the 2018 Copa Mitchell Cup in Santiago, Dominican Republic. CMC Basketball's Board of Directors approved the selections as of today.
As head coach, McAvene will coach the Turks and Caicos National Selection Team over the course of the 2017-20 quad, which could possibly include all Turks and Caicos Men's National Team training camps, and if the Turks and Caicos qualifies, the 2019 Copa Mitchell Cup in Brazil (dates TBD) and the 2020 Summer CMC Games (July 24-Aug. 9) in Colombia.
'I'm extremely humbled and honored to have the opportunity to represent the country as the coach of the Turks and Caicos National Team,' said McAvene. Life is about challenges and helping people. I feel we all have a duty in this sport to elevate it on all levels.
Travis McAvene has over 20 years of coaching under his resume including NCAA Division 1 to minor league basketball in the Universal Basketball Association. In 2012 McAvene was named head coach of the USA Selection Team for the FIBA William Jones Cup (Taipei, Taiwan). He would go on to win one silver medal and a bronze for the Americans. In 2014 he was selected to coach the GIE Maile Matrix of the UBA for the Copa Mitchell Cup. McAvene would go on to three peat at the event. He was later named LatinBasket.com Coach of the Year for his achievements.
