SANTIAGO (Copa Mitchell Cup 2020) - The Santiago Basketball Federation recently announced they've come to an agreement for the 2020 Copa Mitchell Cup. The announcement came at a great time as the Santiago Basket professional club inked Travis McAvene to be the new head coach of the senior men's team.

"Travis has been a very successful coach in FIBA Cups over the last years," said Jo Fabian. "We feel this is the best way to improve our brand and chances of winning in 2020."

He is best known for winning the silver medal in the 2012 FIBA William Jones Cup. McAvene has also won several championships internationally including the Copa Mitchell Cup and Liga Mediterranean Cup (Spain).

In Santiago, McAvene will have to handle a team seeking to continue their resurgence in Dominican hoops. The Dominicans surprised many with their top 4 finish at the Mitchell Cup in 2019 and have continued to do well this year after placing ahead of Plaza Fernando Valerio and Gregorio Urbano Gilbert.

Santiago Basket is already working to position themselves to win, having already signed star guard Ameth Gil (191-G/F-84). Last season Gil was top five in scoring with 22.0 points per game on 45.7% shooting. He was later named LatinBasket.com All-Mitchell Cup 2nd Team.

"It was very important for us to resign Gil for 2020," said McAvene. "He has the scoring ability to carry the club. Our goal is to win."
