A Brief History between the Virgin Islands and Venezuela - Dec 1, 2018

The history between the Virgin Islands and Venezuela has been base on time. The Virgin Islands dominated early but it has been all Venezuela lately. On Monday December 3rd the Virgin Islands will have an opportunity to get back on the good side at home. The game is scheduled to be played at the University of the Virgin Islands Sports and Fitness Center, with a tipoff time of 6:15 pm sharp. General Admission is just $5.00, with the first One Hundred (100) students with college or school IDs having the opportunity for Free Admission.

Men Basketball XI Centralamerican and Caribbean Games 1970 Panama City
The V.I. (5-4, 5th place out of ten teams) dominated the South American team, 75-57, in their very first C.A.C games. Some of the members were Winston Solomon, Arthur Solomon (Texas Western (UTEP) and Morgan State), Rudy Milligan (UVI), Ray Hodge (Wagner College), Danny Cornelius (St. John's University), Lloyd David, Sideny Bell (Marshall University), Pedrito Estrill (Marshall University), Elridge Blake (Fisk University), Marvelous Mel Tatum, Glen 'Kimble' Williams (St. John's University) and Coach: Arthur Jaimson

Men Basketball XIII Centralamerican and Caribbean Games 1978 Medelin (COL)
In a very exciting game, the V.I. lost a tough contest, 104-103, and in the process got knocked out in the first round (2-3).

Men Basketball XIV Centralamerican and Caribbean Games 1982 La Habana (CUB)
Virgin Islands (1-6, 7th place) again could not handle the team from the Carib Nation although Sylvester Charles (finished in the top 5 in scoring) and Will 'Peewee' Petersen were on the team.

CENTROBASKET
Centrobasket V 1973 San Juan, Puerto Rico
Behind top local players like Atmore 'Cornflakes' Fredericks, Audie Henneman, Lloyd David and Bill Barber (Stanford University) the Virgin Islands (2-5, 6th place) defeated Venezuela, 107-88.

Men Basketball VI Centrobasket 1975 Santo Domingo (DOM)
The guard combo of Paget Bell (25) and Roy Christian (26) used their speed to pull away from Venezuela, 105-85. The V.I. finished 1-4 in the final round including their win over the South American squad and 2-2 in the first round with wins over Bahamas and Surinam and losses to Mexico and Cuba.

Men Basketball VIII Centrobasket 1981 San Juan, Mayaguez (PUR)
Virgin Islands (1-6) could not stay with Venezuela, but picked up a win over Haiti. Some members Kennard Calendar, Jerome 'Helicopter' John, Lyle Francis and Wayne 'Malo' Bruce

2-1 * Venezuela was moved from Centrobasket region to South American region

Men Basketball Panamerican Games 1975 Mexico City (MEX)
The 1975 team did not win any games finishing 0-9 including an, 98-86, lost to Venezuela in their only meeting.

AMERICUP
The Virgin Islands have never beaten Venezuela in Americup play.

Men Basketball America World Qualification 2001 Neuquen (ARG
Virgin Islands (2-6, 7th place) lost to Venezuela, 91-75, but picked up wins over Uruguay and Mexico.

Men Basketball VII American Championship 2007 San Juan (PUR)
From 2006-09 was perhaps the best run a Virgin Islands team ever had. Two silver medals at Centrobasket and defeating Canada for the first time. The V.I. (0-4, 10th place) lost a heartbreaker to Venezuela, 87 -84. The trio of Kevin Sheppard, Cuthbert Victor and Jason Edwin were the catalyst.

Men Basketball AmeriCup 2017 Cordoba (ARG)
Despite losing 86-84 to Venezuela the Virgin Islands qualified for the 2019 Panamerican Games that will be held in Lima, Peru. Venezuela's John Cox nailed a three point shot with just under a second remaining to win the game. HIGHLIGHTS

New FIBA qualifying format.
On September 3rd, and undermanned Virgin Islands squad got bounced around in Venezuela, 87-73. HIGHLIGHTS

Overall in MEN 3-8. Junior men not included.

Jordan Murphy (201-F-97) continues to make history at Minnesota. Murphy played a huge role in the Gophers' 86-76 victory over Louisville in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, scoring 18 points and grabbing six rebounds in the win.
