AUGUSTA, Ga. - With a roaring crowd of over 2,500 in attendance, the Augusta University men's basketball team beat the Emmanuel College Lions 77-70 on Thursday morning in Christenberry Fieldhouse. The Jaguars hosted the fifth annual Education Day Game with over 2,500 fifth graders from Richmond County for a special 11:00 a.m. tipoff.

Augusta freshman Miguel Arnold (180-PG) had 15 points at the break and finished with 22 to lead the team. Freshman Tyree Myers added 13 points and six assists, senior Deane Williams 11 points, eight rebounds, four assists, and three steals, and junior Rafael Monteiro 10 points and eight rebounds for AU. EC's Kendrick Colvin led all players with 35 points and added 13 rebounds for a double-double.

AU rolled to a 13-5 run in the first five minutes of the game and held a 20-point advantage over the Lions who never owned the lead in the first half. Each team shot over 40 percent from the floor in the first half, but Augusta outrebounded the Lions 18-13 to own the edge.

Despite never leading in the game, Emmanuel closed the deficit and were down by five, 69-65, with three minutes in the game. Augusta gained composure and forced EC to foul, as the Jaguars held on for a seven-point lead. The Jaguars did not miss their first 14 free-throw attempts in the game.

The Jaguars play at Young Harris College in Young Harris, Ga., on Monday, Dec. 17 for an 11:00 a.m. Peach Belt Conference tipoff.

University of the Virgin Islands women (4-12) travels to Ohio to play Pikeville 9:00pm on Friday and Shawnee State (8-2) at 3pm (Saturday) in the PENN STATION CLASSIC. The games will be streamed:

Rashawn Fredericks (196-G/F-96) and University of Cincinnati will face a much more familiar local foe Saturday when they renew the Crosstown Shootout rivalry with Xavier at Fifth Third Arena. UC leads the series, 50-35. 3pm ESPN2

Sherelle Geroge and the Cal Penn Vulcans return to non-conference play on Saturday, Dec. 8, when they host Cheyney at the Convocation Center with tipoff at 1 p.m.
