The injury North Texas forward Jahmiah Simmons (193-F-98) suffered during a win over Marshall on Thursday night is not as serious as team trainers feared, a school source said on Friday morning.

Simmons took a hard fall in the first half and was helped from the floor. UNT coach Grant McCasland said after the game that "it doesn't look great with Jahmiah."

The fear after the game was that Simmons might be lost for the season with a broken ankle.

Simmons underwent x-rays just hours after the game that confirmed his ankle is not broken.

The sophomore forward is still expected to miss some time. UNT will host Western Kentucky in a key Conference USA game on Saturday.

Simmons is averaging 3.6 points and 4.2 rebounds per game. He started the first nine games of UNT's season and has played a key role while coming off the bench since.

Losing Simmons for even a short stretch would be a key blow for UNT, which has dealt with a series of injuries throughout the season. Staring guard Jorden Duffy has not played since a win over Rice on Jan. 19, while forward Mark Tikhonenko is out for the season with a foot injury.

UNT has leaned heavily on its starting five as its options on the bench have dwindled. All five of the Mean Green's starters played at least 30 minutes against Marshall.

UNT did not have a single bench point in its win over the Thundering Herd. DJ Draper played 24 minutes off the bench. He finished with three rebounds and two assists but did not score.

Simmons and Draper have been UNT's best reserves and are playing an average of 17.4 and 17.0 minutes per game, respectively.

UNT (20-4) is 8-3 in Conference USA play and is in a tie for second in the league standings with Texas-San Antonio. Old Dominion leads the league at 9-3.

Western Kentucky is just behind UNT at 7-4.

The Riddle, Wrapped Inside a Mystery that is Royce O'Neale - 1 day ago
By Adam Bushman Royce O'Neale(198-SF-93, college: Baylor)< paid many dues throughout his journey to the NBA. Splitting his collegiate eligibility between the University of Denver and the University of Baylor, O'Neale did his best to prepare for the NBA draft. He would spend the 2015 draft night waiting for his name to be called, only to end the night disappointed with his name uncalled. Spending the next two years in Europe playing professionally, he worked to hone the skills necessary...   [read more]
