Nicolas
Claxton
ATHENS -Like father, like son.

Nicolas Claxton (211-SF-99), the silver lining in the cloud that has been Georgia's 2018-19 basketball season, further enhanced that distinction on Tuesday when he was named second-team All-SEC. Claxton's designation comes 26 years later almost to the day after his father, Charles Claxton, received the exact same distinction as a sophomore playing for the Bulldogs.

In fact, the on-court production similarities between the father and son are uncanny. As a sophomore, Nicolas Claxton leads his Georgia team in scoring (13.0), rebounding (8.6) and blocks (2.4). As a sophomore in 1993, Charles Claxton was named second-team All-SEC while leading his team scoring (11.5 ppg), rebounding (7.9 rpg), and blocks (1.6 bpg).

In fact, 'Nic' is in the process of trying to chase his father's all-time blocks records. Dad holds UGA's single-season record with 94 in 1995 and is No. 2 on the career list with 247. Nic currently has 75 this season and 117 over his first two seasons.

But that's where the similarities end. The senior Claxton was a 7-foot, 235-pound center who almost played with the shadow of the backboard. His son is 6-foot-11 sophomore forward from Greenville, S.C., who plays all over the court and has been Mr. Everything for the Bulldogs this season.

Nic Claxton is the only SEC player and one of the only ones in the country, that leads his team in four major statistical categories, including blocked shots (75) and steals (34). Claxton also leads the team in minutes played (31.7 pg) and deflections and is second on the team in assists (57). His 268 total rebounds is 15th on Georgia's list for most in a season, and just three away from No. 14 Terry Fair.

Not only does Claxton spend lot of time playing on the perimeter, but he often brings the ball up the floor for the Bulldogs on offense. He has made 18 3-pointers, though his shooting percentage from behind the arc (.290) has taken a recent dip. He also led the team in double-digit scoring performances (20), double-digit rebounding efforts (12) and 'double-doubles' in scoring and rebounding (8).

Claxton has been the overwhelming bright spot in what has otherwise been a dreadful season for Georgia basketball. In their first year under coach Tom Crean, the Bulldogs (11-20) finished 13th in the 14-team SEC with a 2-16 record, the program's worst in 35 years.
