The Georgia men's basketball team received some bad news on Friday. Only one day after Anthony Edwards signed with the Bulldogs, Nicolas Claxton (211-SF-99) declared for the NBA draft.

'First, I want to thank God for giving me this opportunity and blessing me to be in this position," Claxton said on his twitter feed. "I want to thank my family, coaches, and trainers for always believing in me and pushing me to be the best player and person that I can be. I want to thank Dawgnation for welcoming me with open arms. No matter what, I will always be a Georgia Bulldog for life. With that being said, I will be entering my name in the 2019 NBA Draft.'

"To the people doubting me I love it. I worked for everything I have. I wasn't a top 100 guy coming out of high school. I stayed the course and grinded whether I was playing 3 minutes a game or 30 minutes. Never give up on yourself and always keep a positive attitude."

Per NCAA rules, Claxton can still return to the Bulldogs even if he signs with an agent. Former Bulldog Yante Maten declared for the draft in 2017 before coming back for his senior season in Athens.

Claxton was Georgia's leading scorer in his sophomore season with 13.4 points per game. He also led Georgia in rebounds, steals and blocks. The 6-foot-11, 220-pound forward from Greenville, South Carolina, started in every game last season.

Coach Tom Crean said in a statement issued via Twitter: 'Nic has done a very good job of staying in the present while getting feedback and exploring his options for the future. The maturity of staying focused is impressive. We will continue to help, solicit feedback and be insightful and supportive through everything.'

ESPN rates Claxton as the No. 40 overall prospect in the 2019 NBA Draft. A strong pre-draft process could vault him into the first round of the draft. Claxton has until May 30 to decide if he wants to remain in this year's draft.

Should Claxton decide to return to Georgia, he would likely be joining a much-improved roster. The Bulldogs brought in the No. 7 signing class for the 2019 recruiting cycle. The recruiting haul is headlined by the nation's No. 2 overall player, Anthony Edwards. The NBA Draft will be held Thursday, June 20.

Claxton is the son of Charles Claxton, who played for Georgia from 1991-1995. The Phoenix Suns selected Charles in the second round of the 1994 draft, but he opted to return to school for his senior season.

NBA Draft Combine Notebook: Nicolas Claxton Displays Versatility - 5 days ago
CHICAGO - The on-court portion of the draft combine wrapped up on Friday, with two more scrimmages giving prospects a chance to perform in front of the entire league. As a whole, five-on-five play was heavily watered down this year as a vast majority of potential first-round picks opted not to play, aiming to protect their draft stock. Regardless, there were a number of intriguing players who benefited this week. There were also some guys who struggled. Some of the more noteworthy perform...   [read more]
