The Westside Christian High School girls basketball team looks to have plenty to be excited about as it gets ready to start Lewis & Clark League play.
First of all, the Eagles have a new head coach in Kasima Hodge. Originally from the U.S Virgin Islands, Hodge holds a Bachelor's Degree in Sociology and a Master's Degree in Business Administration. She has more than nine years of experience in coaching and player development, basketball operations, and evaluation of talent, and currently also coaches for P.U.S.H Basketball, an AAU program.
She is joined by another new face to Westside, assistant coach Thomas Simien, and returning assistant coach Brittany Bowling.
As for the Westside Christian team this season, the Eagles have some key returnees back from last year's squad that went 0-12 in Lewis & Clark League play a year ago, while going 1-22 for the season.
Among the returnees are seniors Kaylee Becker, Claire Shearer and Lily Shearer.
"We are hoping to make this a memorable season for our seniors, and help them go out with a bang," Hodge said.
Other players on the Westside Christian varsity roster include junior Natalie Van Gordon, sophomore Keiran Christiansen, freshman Mia Jetton, sophomore Ava Kelly, freshman Poppy Gardner, junior Kennedy Duke, junior Kaia Lunz, freshman Eden Rau and freshman Abby Rader.
"There will be many 'firsts' this season and we will celebrate them all, while striving for greatness," Hodge said.
Westside Christian is off to a 1-8 start to the season. The Eagles' picked up their win on Dec. 10, when they got a 41-26 victory at Siletz Valley in a non-league contest. Becker sank five 3-point baskets and scored 23 points in that game. Lily Shearer added 18 points in the victory, and Claire Shearer had 18 rebounds and eight points. Jetton had six points and three assists.
