DENTON - Mean Green women's basketball was represented last week at the 2021 FIBA Women's AmeriCup with stellar play from former North Texas player Anisha George (188-C-98, college: N.Texas) who led the Virgin Islands to the quarterfinals of the competition.
George posted a game-high 22 points June 15 in the final contest of Group Phase to push ISV to an 85-44 win over El Salvador and clinch the final spot to advance to the quarterfinals.
"The best part about representing the Virgin Islands is just that. Being asked to represent. They could have chosen anyone, but they chose me," George said.
Throughout five games, George compiled 70 points, 30 rebounds, 10 blocks and six steals. Her two blocks per game ranked first among all players, while her averages of 14.0 points and six rebounds were fifth and 14th, respectively.
"Playing against these other great basketball players was a tremendous experience," George said.
"There are recruits and families who need to know that professional basketball dreams can be achieved at UNT," head coach Jalie Mitchell said. "Anisha George is proof, as is Acheil Tac. Both women have worked for their place in this game and serve as a model for those striving to get where they are."
From 2018-20 with the Mean Green, George recorded over 700 points, nearly 500 rebounds and over 60 blocked shots. As a senior, the St. Croix, Virgin Islands native averaged team-highs of 14.3 points and 8.9 rebounds and led C-USA in field goal accuracy to finish fifth in the nation at shooting over 64 percent. George scored a career-high 26 points against UTSA, and her 26 rebounds collected against Mid-America Christian was the highest single game total in Division I in 2019-20.
"Anisha has elevated Mean Green WBB from day one. She came in as a highly touted junior college player who had already represented the ISV in professional games. Her decision to come to UNT was huge, as were her all-conference and all-defensive team selections while here in Denton," Mitchell said.
