Eloy Vargas gets MVP of the Week award for Uruguayan LUB (by Hoops Agents)- January 20, 2023
The 34-year old center had a double-double of 25 points and eleven rebounds, while his team beat Olimpia (#13, 5-11) 89-77. Aguada maintains the 3rd position in Uruguayan LUB. They would have been even better if they hadn't lost a few games earlier this season. Aguada will need more victories to improve their 10-7 record. Vargas turned to be Aguada's top player in his first season with the team. University of Kentucky graduate has very impressive stats this year. Vargas is in league's top in rebounds (2nd best: 12.0rpg) and averages solid 1.6bpg and 53.4% FGP. The second most remarkable performance in last round's games was young American power forward Charles Thomas (202-F/C-1986) of Penarol. Thomas impressed basketball fans with 27 points and 8 rebounds. Of course Penarol cruised to a 83-74 relatively comfortable win over slightly higher-ranked Aguada (#3, 10-7). It was definitely game of the week between two contenders to the title. Penarol consolidated its place in top 4 of the standings. His team's 9-7 record is not bad at all. Thomas is a newcomer at Penarol and it seems he did not have too much trouble to become one of team's leaders. He belongs to the best scorers in the league with 19.0ppg (#4). He also registered 7.3 boards per game. The third best performed player last round was American Marcus Thomas (191-PG-1995) of Olimpia (#13). Thomas got into 30-points club by scoring 31 points in the last round. He went also for five assists. Despite Thomas' great performance Olimpia lost 77-89 to the higher-ranked Aguada (#3, 10-7). But his team cannot count on just a single shooter as he also needs help of the other teammates. The chances of Olimpia not to end season at such low position in the league, however are less than slim as they have already lost 11 games, recording just five victories. With bigger assistance of his teammates, Thomas could try to bring Olimpia's a little bit higher in the standings. Thomas has individually a great season in Uruguay. After 16 games, he made it on the list of the league's leaders in points with 19.0ppg (4th best). Other top performing players last week: 4. Windi Graterol (204-C-1986) of Goes - 24 points and 12 rebounds 5. Kiril Wachsmann (203-PF-1984) of Malvin - 12 points, 15 rebounds and 2 assists 6. Dion Wright (201-F-1993) of Defensor - 21 points and 6 rebounds 7. Agustin Zuvich (201-F/C-1995) of Aguada - 17 points and 11 rebounds 8. Rodney Green (197-G-1988) of Penarol - 25 points, 3 rebounds and 4 assists 9. D'Nicolas Delgado (198-PF-1987) of Urunday - 11 points, 9 rebounds and 2 assists 10.
