LUB Round 23 (Regular Season): Defensor beat Cordon by two after a very close game

Eighth-ranked Cordon (8-12) used its home court advantage to challenge fourth ranked Defensor (13-7) in Montevideo on Monday. The visitors managed to secure only two-point victory 76-74. However their fans expected much easier game. It ended at the same time the two-game winning streak of Cordon. American guard Malik Curry (184-1999, college: WVU) orchestrated the victory by scoring 26 points, 5 assists and 4 steals. point guard Federico Soto (195-1997) contributed with 17 points and 9 rebounds for the winners. American swingman Dennis McKinney (194-1998, college: Mt.Mercy) answered with 19 points and 7 rebounds for Cordon. Defensor have a solid series of three victories in a row. They maintain fourth place with 13-7 record. Cordon at the other side keeps the eighth position with 12 games lost.
Another exciting game was a derby match between two teams from Montevideo: Hebraica (#5) and Malvin (#7). Malvin was defeated at home 84-90 and even the advantage of their own court did not help. It was a great evening for naturalized Italian point guard Luciano Parodi (182-1994) who led his team to a victory scoring 22 points, 7 rebounds and 9 assists. Jordan Williams helped adding 23 points and 4 steals. American guard Jamal Bieniemy (196-1999, college: UTEP) responded with 22 points and 4 steals. Defending champion maintains fifth place with 12-8 record. Malvin at the other side keeps the seventh position with 12 games lost.
Another exciting game was again a derby between two local teams from Montevideo: Penarol (#1) and Nacional (#2). Penarol (18-3) won against visiting Nacional (16-3) 79-68. It ended at the same time the seven-game winning streak of Nacional. It was an exceptional evening for Jayson Granger who led the winners and scored 15 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists. Michael Smith came up with 24 points for Nacional in the defeat. Penarol maintains first place with 18-3 record. Loser Nacional keeps the second position with three games lost.

In the last game of round 23 Urupan beat Goes on the road 80-74.
The most impressive performance of 23th round was 21 points and 11 rebounds by Miguel Simon of Urupan.



Malvin - Hebraica 84-90

Another exciting game was a derby match between two teams from Montevideo: Hebraica (#5) and Malvin (#7). Malvin was defeated at home 84-90 and even the advantage of their own court did not help. It was a great evening for naturalized Italian point guard Luciano Parodi (182-1994) who led his team to a victory scoring 22 points, 7 rebounds and 9 assists. American guard Jamal Bieniemy (196-1999, college: UTEP) responded with 22 points and 4 steals and the other American import forward Emmitt Holt (201-1996, college: Providence) scored 16 points (on 7-of-9 shooting from the field). Five Hebraica and four Malvin players scored in double figures. Defending champion maintains fifth place with 12-8 record. Malvin at the other side keeps the seventh position with 12 games lost.

Another exciting game was again a derby between two local teams from Montevideo: Penarol (#1) and Nacional (#2). Penarol (18-3) won against visiting Nacional (16-3) 79-68. It ended at the same time the seven-game winning streak of Nacional. It was an exceptional evening for naturalized Italian guard Jayson Granger (191-1989) who led the winners and scored 15 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists. American guard Shaquille Johnson (191-1990, college: Marshall) accounted for 14 points, 5 rebounds and 6 assists for the winning side. Granger is a former Eurobasket Summer League player, which is considered top international summer league in the market. Five Penarol players scored in double figures. American guard Michael Smith (193-1995, college: CBU) came up with 24 points and the other American import power forward Eric Anderson (204-1993, college: New Haven) added 17 points respectively for Nacional in the defeat. Penarol maintains first place with 18-3 record. Loser Nacional keeps the second position with three games lost.

The game between closely ranked teams ended with tenth ranked Urupan's (6-13) road victory over 11th ranked Goes (5-15) in Montevideo 80-74 on Monday. It was an exceptional evening for Dominican forward Miguel Simon (203-1994, college: ASA CC, agency: BMS Sport Agency) who led the winners with a double-double by scoring 21 points and 11 rebounds. Point guard Mateo Sarni (185-1998) accounted for 12 points, 10 rebounds and 8 assists for the winning side. Five Urupan players scored in double figures. American guard Mustapha Heron (196-1997, college: St.John's) came up with 29 points and the other American import center Gary McGhee (210-1988, college: Pittsburgh, agency: Inception Sports) added 8 points and 11 rebounds respectively for Goes in the defeat. Urupan moved-up to ninth place. Goes lost seventh consecutive game. They keep the eleventh position with 15 games lost.
